Well I've checked my original rough notes but they don't add anything.
I guess this will just go down as one of life's little mysteries! Bear in mind that all of this would have been happening between 0200 and 0500 on a slow steam-heated train on jointed track, and the opportunities for dossing through the crucial bit of the journey must not be underestimated.

I was a member of The Branch Line Society at the time (as I am now). I am surmising that I caught 1L22 (14-15/03/1981) because of the diversionary routing listed in the BLS fortnightly newsletter for it. I cannot think why I would have deprived myself of sleep otherwise (40 hauled or not) when I had to be at work after returning to London. I wonder if the BLS newsletters for the relevant year have been archived. As you say one of life's little mysteries.

HR Pines Express Charter 0756 London Paddington to Weymouth Quay (terminated at Weymouth Town owing to late running caused by operational difficulties)
The Six Bells Junction website has the details but...(it seems from other listed excursions the weather across the UK around this date was a tad cold with blizzard conditions further north)

47090 CF London Paddington to Swindon (replaced the allocated class 31 pair prior to departure at Paddington as steam heating boilers weren't working on the 31s)
47069 CF Swindon to Bristol Temple Meads via Bradford on Avon North to West Junctions (replaced 47090 as steam heating boiler not working - one problem boiler isolated loco)
46013 LA Bristol Temple Meads clockwise around the Avonmouth loop plus Rhubarb curve to Westbury
37233 LE Westbury to Radstock and return
47020 BR Westbury to Yeovil Pen Mill (via a recess in the Down Goods Sidings at Castle Cary to allow service trains from and to Weymouth to clear the single line to Yeovil)

I bailed at Yeovil Pen Mill (as the train was going to terminate at Weymouth Town and run directly back to London Waterloo) for

1*118 DMU 1750 Weymouth Town - Bristol Temple Meads (Yeovil Pen Mill to Bath Spa)
50039 BR 2010 Bristol Temple Meads - London Paddington (Bath Spa to London Paddington

A re-run was arranged for 13th May 1979 which I booked on but I didn't get to Weymouth Quay then either (But that's a tale for later).

I have dug out my old notes from that weekend and have written GN&GC from Peterborough to Doncaster so assumed via Sleaford station as opposed to the avoiding line

I think at that time the Joint Line diversions only ran via Sleaford station when calling there for passenger purposes.
Only just found this.

Yes, in 1981 diverted ECML trains via the Joint would usually only go into Sleaford for passenger calls, which would be train or bus connections for booked Grantham stops.

My 1980/81 PTT has 2315 SO Kings Cross-Bradford as non-stop Peterborough-Doncaster, so no Grantham passengers and no need to go into Sleaford.

Another work trip, another carefully-chosen train:
90037 0910 Kings Cross – Doncaster
Tuesday 21/03/00
The return south was rather more prosaic:
91004 0935 Doncaster – Kings Cross

Regarding earlier discussions with @QJ re ECML diversions, I must conclude we did indeed run via Askern on 1L22, and will update my records accordingly. Thanks for the help.

Tuesday 26th March 2019 - Goblin only recently electrified - first trip on it.
I once attempted to travel on that line. I travelled out to Barking on a bank holiday Monday, only to discover that the line was shut.

Still on my "to do" list 34 years later!
