Five years ago today I did a load of GWR trains around Berkshire including the Marlow branch.

We forget how long some classes have lasted, think HSTs and 37s. Its a long way from the cull of modernisation plan diesels in the 70s - all those lovely Hydraulics, even the successful Deltics were only about 20 years. HSTs have a lot to answer for but looking back we miss them !. Wonder if the IETs will last so long (and will anyone notice) ?.

Notes:
(1) The last time I had 47464 - damaged in a collision in September 1986 and withdrawn the same month
(2) 47641, only a couple of days out of works from conversion from 47086, still carried the "COLOSSUS" nameplates, which was apparently an error - they were removed again fairly quickly.
An image of 641 at Saltley the following day is here - 47641
(3) 1,000+ miles on 47413 in around 40 hours was certainly the quickest I ever did this on a standard 47; obviously it became easier later on with the twin tanks 47413 arrives at Sheffield with 1O19, 7/3/86

Absolutely. There can't be many folk who have had two 82s in the same day.

I only had one 82 full stop.
I had two, but one of them - 82 008 - was quite a respectable mileage from Willesden Junction to Wigan North Western and return on a Footex from Portsmouth Harbour back in 1978. South of Willesdan, the single 33 provided struggled with load 11 over the steep gradients on the Portsmouth Direct but, luckily, I had given it very generous timings!

The Bluebell Railway ran the 'Wealden Executive'. I believe it was marketed as the railway's first non steam powered train and was hauled by class 73 E6043/73136. This loco was on the line working on the project to extend the line to East Grinstead.

I only had one 82 full stop.

Somewhat helped by the fact I lived on the WCML as a youngster, I had 7 of the 8 that survived to gain TOPS numbers.

In fact, ironically, of the TOPS locos, I missed one 81 (81016) , one 82 (82006), and three 83s (83003/4/13) ... and all of the 84s bar one.

However, on a quick search I can't find a day where I had two different 82s!

Certainly in their later days, yes. I had 84003 on an overnight service from Scotland in 1979 and that was the only one I ever had ... though I did run for 84010 at Birmingham New Street once on a Sunday train to Manchester ... and missed it.

Only had one 84 which was totally unexpected. It was 84001, which worked the 09:30 SO Birmingham NS-Llandudno on 17/9/1977, between New Steet and Crewe.

I think I've already told this story earlier in this thread. If so, please forgive the repeat.
Back in March 1980, I travelled overnight from Kings Cross to Edinburgh with a Deltic via all manner of diversionary routes. It became apparent that there was little of interest as far as diesels were concerned working in Scotland that day, so we (about half a dozen of us) wandered over to Glasgow Central to cover the 1515 to Nottingham. The noises being emitted by the electric loco on the front were most unusual. We could normally tell a Roarer from and 86 or 87 from a distance by sound alone, but this was most odd. 84003 was the answer! Sadly it only worked one way, failing on arrival at Carlisle. To me, having the 84 that day was a far bigger prize than having a Deltic or 40 out of Scotland.
