FRIDAY 5th FEBRUARY 1988:

50 023 Portsmouth Harbour-Waterloo

Ah that famous train, due through Guildford at around 1630 and something I frequently observed when coming home from school. Lasted from May 1986 to May 1988, possibly 1989.

2B29 1205 London Waterloo-Southampton

That figures.

That year (1989/90) a number of the Waterloo-Southampton stoppers were formed of 73s + TC stock. I can't remember exactly which, but ISTR a couple in the morning and a couple in the afternoon. I have the feeling that the 0850 (ish) from Southampton-Waterloo was one, and another passed through the Southampton area at around 1350 (which would back up the idea of the 1205 being thus formed). There could have been others as well.

The diagramming for these services was quite complex and it was hard to discern any patterns. One might guess the 0850-ish up (due Waterloo around 1030-1040?) then formed the 1205 down. I cannot remember if the 0950-ish up was also formed 73+TC(s), which would be the obvious up service for 2B29 - but diagrams were not always obvious as I said above.

I'm not sure if anyone has any observations or CWNs of the SWML that year, including more examples of such formations, but would be fascinating if so.

390 017 1059 Rugby – Stafford
220 034 1222 Stafford – Manchester Piccadilly
Thence by trams 1002 + 1004 Manchester Victoria – Old Trafford for the Man Utd v Reading FA Cup match. The point of including this is because after the match I left direct by train:
323 233 + 323 234 1940 Manchester United Football Ground – Manchester Piccadilly
390 050 2012 Manchester Piccadilly – Rugby via Stoke, Bushbury, Bescot, Aston, Stechford
I believe Old Trafford football ground is still rail connected, but hasn’t been used since 2018 due to health and safety fears. This was my last trip from that station.

321408 2002 Northampton - M Keynes

Thursday 17th February 2011

90044 1230 Birmingham NS - Euston
90044 1443 Euston - Birmingham NS
90044 1630 Birmingham NS - Euston

That's it. All done. 50/50 for class 90. It only took me 22 years and 6 days!

Unless the AC locomotive group are able to restore their class 81, that I believe was the last date that I scored a new electric locomotive for haulage as I certainly will no be chasing class 88 or anything above class 91.

Well done! You certainly made sure of it that day. It took me a few months longer to achieve the same result.

Freight trains departing from Trafford Park pass (non-stop) through the MUFC platform.

Four years ago today I would've caught a Tube between King's Cross and either Aldgate or Monument.

Saturday 20th February 1988 - Young Persons Railcard Promotion

87024 0900 Euston - ?
85004 ? - Crewe (87024 DIT)
2x2car class 108 DMU 1327 Crewe - Liverpool LS
31405 1445 Liverpool LS - Manchester P
150208 1614 Manchester V - Liverpool LS
86421 1805 Liverpool LS - Crewe
87017 1855 Crewe - Euston

The class 87 failed somewhere between Roade Jn & Hillmorton Jn and was rescued by the class 85, arrived at Crewe approx 75 minutes late. Unfortunately I do not know where it failed other than it was not in a tunnel nor I believe near one, not visible from the motorway. May have been near the canal, possibly in the Whilton Marina area. If anyone could help, would be appreciated.

My first haulage from class 85.

Slipped up with the Liverpool - Manchester round trip, should have done Lime Street - Victoria and could have got something more interesting that way.

That Sunday at the end of the half term school holiday, appears to have been the last running day at the GCRN.

A work trip to Crewe, so naturally once business was concluded I went for a little spin:
43027 + 43129 0627 Reading -Paddington
390 003 0810 Euston – Crewe
47750 1527 Crewe – Chester
31468 + 31602 1549 Chester – Manchester Oxford Road via Northwich, Stockport
The 31s were top-and-tail, working in multiple.
47792 1722 Manchester Oxford Road – Rhyl
47750 1923 Rhyl – Crewe
Tuesday 24/02/04
After an overnight stay in Crewe, the next day it’s off to Glasgow for more meetings:
90008 0838 Crewe – Glasgow Central, delayed 30’ due to OLE defect Kirtlebridge.
87021 1649 Glasgow Central – Euston

Friday 23/02/07
Nothing interesting on the personal moves front. Just a note that 390 033 working 1S83 1715 Euston – Glasgow Central derailed at Lambrigg, with one fatality. This section of the WCML remained closed for 2 weeks in consequence.

https://www.gov.uk/raib-reports/derailment-at-grayrigg

By coincidence, 390 033 was already my lowest mileage Pendolino before the accident. Obviously, it has remained so ever since.

From the days when we had a few InterCity services in Kent. Why did i do the 47 to Sevenoaks? I do not know. Perhaps I thought Kensington Olympia would be useless for getting anywhere from. Had I been going on the WCML I would have stayed on. Incidentally the only time I have ever had a loco-hauled train to or from Sevenoaks!

Six years ago today it was my ex's 30th (actually on Monday) however we travelled by train from Stockport to London. Returned on Monday. It just happens that days and dates are exactly the same as six years ago.
