Its funny really looking back now to the 80`s, we thought the 70`s was bad enough after losing our steam, but the 70`s saw the rise of the HST and the loss of most of the early classes, the 80`s was pretty barren to us back then, looking back from today, it was still pretty good.

I'd heard on the grapevine that my last 50 required for haulage was on the Plymouth-Portsmouth, so I nipped over the Solent from Ryde, did the deed and then nipped back again. It would have been nice to have done it over the Portsmouth Direct to Guildford or Waterloo on the 15 30, but I had a pub dominoes league match in the evening. Somehow that loco had managed to evade me both on the WCML when I lived in Scotland and on the Western Region after it's and my moves South in the mid-'seventies.

1V10 0905 Brighton-Plymouth was, at least on Saturdays, the one to go for around that time.
It had a reputation of the ED working on Diesel Power out of Brighton for the cranks?

Another Merrymaker, which started from Ealing Broadway but on the return took a different route and terminated at Oxford, IIRC quite late on for a Saturday. I was part of an InterCity Railway Society Group who had organised a coach tour of Glasgow area depots, the ones I remember visiting are Hamilton, Motherwell, Eastfield and Glasgow Works. Not sure if we went to Polmadie, and definitely didn't do Shields or Corkerhill. But still a great day!
