Sorry, this is two days late.

I have no records of anything I did back in the day but do remember this because it was so unusual:

Friday 21 October 1983:

1832 Waterloo to Portsmouth and Southsea or Fratton (can't remember which), an unusual service which skipped Farncombe but called at Witley, was formed of 8EPB 5123 + 5124 vice the usual CIG/VEP combo. Didn't normally travel this late but for some reason I stayed on at school into the evening.

My only ever journey on an EPB, if I remember right, though I saw them very much more frequently than that.

Sunday 11th October 1992

3154+1317 0925 Waterloo - Woking
Interesting that there were still unrefurbished VEPs around in late 1992, four years after the refurbishment began (also seen on two of your other journeys that day). This (about 1992-96) was a period when my interest waned a little, so I can't remember the exact detail of when the 42x refurbishment programme ended. I do remember everything was refurbished by 1997, though.
47717 1015 Woking - Waterloo
2405+2406 1045 Waterloo - Basingstoke
So looks like the xx45 out of Waterloo (the semi-fast, if I remember right?) was mixed 442 and slam-door (looking at the later 1252 out of Clapham). If I remember right, on Sundays the semi-fast was usually all slammers, so the 442s on this service must have been unusual?
47579 1148 Basingstoke - Clapham Jn
Presumably an Exeter, not a diverted XC.

VEP refurbishment was completed in Summer 1995. Remember there was nearly 200 of them to do!

The xx45 was the semi-fast on Sunday, particularly useful as it stopped at the likes of Eastleigh! From my memory it was normally slam-door right up to early 2005. Could be Ceps, Beps, Cigs, Veps or any combination thereof!

47579 was on an Exeter train. According to my 1992 combined volume, it was in pool NTWE with the 47/7s for Waterloo - Exeter with the other 47/4s in pool NWRA for Paddington services.

OK thanks. Didn't realise it was that late.

Thought so, definitely the xx45 departure from Waterloo rings a bell. I remember using those on Sunday nights a few times a year in the early 90s, and more regularly to access the New Forest in the late 90s and early 00s. CIGs were the most frequent, but VEPs could turn up and, as you said, from 1998(?) onwards, CEPs too. I think the service was introduced in 1988 with the Weymouth electrification (it was definitely present in 1989/90), and most years was 8-car to Bournemouth or Poole, but for a time in the early 90s, divided at Eastleigh with a portion for Portsmouth.

I remember in 1997 trying to figure out which services were diagrammed for which stock (I used to walk in the New Forest near the railway line so saw them quite a bit), but couldn't discern any pattern at all.

The double-442 on the 1045 must have been unusual though, I don't recall 442s on those services at all.

47579 was on an Exeter train. According to my 1992 combined volume, it was in pool NTWE with the 47/7s for Waterloo - Exeter with the other 47/4s in pool NWRA for Paddington services.
OK thanks, yes it was the fact it wasn't a 47/7 which confused me.

Was at Euston having not yet decided what I was going to do and noted the EWS liveried 90 at the country end of platform 5 so investigated. Knowing that I only needed one EWS liveried 90 (032) and was at that point on 46/50 it had to be done! 90032 was stored early in 2004 so unsurprisingly I never had it again.

That sounds right with Weymouth electrification in 1988. I think the basic service was xx30 to Weymouth with 442s and xx45 to Bournemouth with slamdoor stock.

Before 1988 it was xx30 Weymouth (fast 91) TC/REP, xx45 Bournemouth (semi 92) TC/REP, and the Bournemouth stopper for all stations after Woking (93) VEP

I think you are right about the 442s being rare on the xx45s. Am assuming it was vice slamdoor stock for some reason. It was about 1997/98 the CEPs went to SWT. Some would have left Ramsgate when the class 365s arrived.

In 1990 the Eastleigh - Portsmouth line was electrified which was when the xx45 started to split at Eastleigh.

I had the feeling it was xx15/xx45 on a Sunday but might be wrong. Weekdays it was approximately xx30 and xx45, both with 442s, but the xx45 was faster than on a Sunday, calling at principal towns only.
Before 1988 it was xx30 Weymouth (fast 91) TC/REP, xx45 Bournemouth (semi 92) TC/REP, and the Bournemouth stopper for all stations after Woking (93) VEP
On weekdays it was certainly this pattern, though Sundays there was only an hourly faster service (xx46 in 1982/83, I have a CWN for this year). The stopper on Sundays was split into three services: a Waterloo-Basingstoke stopper, Micheldever and Shawford served by Reading-Portsmouth, and Eastleigh-Lymington. Beaulieu Road was closed on Sundays, so trips out to that part of the New Forest by train in the 80s would have been difficult!
In 1990 the Eastleigh - Portsmouth line was electrified which was when the xx45 started to split at Eastleigh.
I remember that. Actually I do have a question regarding electrification of this line and its workings; I seem to remember (but might be wrong) that in 1990 the Waterloo-Portsmouth via Eastleigh and Portsmouth-Southampton(-Wareham) stoppers interworked, with a mixture of CIGs and VEPs. In 1991 these definitely became separately worked, with Greyhound CIGs on the Waterloo-Portsmouth via Eastleigh. Not sure if you can remember whether the former actually happened in 1990?
