A very lively performance from the 99 year old, and last built J27. I visited the GCR today to see and ride behind this veteran, which is on loan from the NYMR. Saw it often during the last year of steam in the North East working coal trains, but never thought I would be hauled by it 55 years later.

My bold - E54091 was obviously getting let down by its powered partner. How on earth did I notice !.

Hi all first post in here. Love this thread.
Welcome on board! A Generator and two Goyles in your first post - enough to keep a couple of regulars very happy!

Looking forward to seeing more moves over the coming months...

30th September 2022

Yesterday I left home at the ridiculously early time of 05:00 to head down to the Severn Valley Railway for the day. The journey wasn't too bad and I arrived at a foggy Kidderminster station at 08:00, just too late to take the first departure of the day which was visiting attraction Deltic 9. However, after getting my wrist band I was very happy to be catching the 08:30, which produced 50049. This Hoover was substituting for unavailable 50007, which was fine by me as it meant a required 50 in the book - as I've said previously, I should have made more of an effort when I had the chance.

Here it is, during an impromptu photo stop at Arley, waiting for the Teddy Bear to pass:

DSC_0441.JPG

This service terminated at Highley, and after just enough time for some more phots and a coffee, D1062 (pretending to be D1040) rolled in to take me back to Kiddy. The last time I had this Western was in 1997.

A quick cross-platform leap, and I was behind another required EE loco in the shape of 40106 (my 41st 40). I was sitting a fair way back down the train, so decided to bale at Bewdley to get a run behind my 'pet' Hoover, 50035. Seen after arrival into Kidderminster:

DSC_0486.JPG

The next departure was another new loco for me in the pleasing shape of D1015. Another Bewdley move, for 50049 back, and then, for me, the main event of the day - a round trip to Bridgnorth behind Alycidon. I was in the front coach both ways, and with the rain coming down quite heavily I was definitely in the right place.

Time for a couple more moves, starting with another run behind 40106 to Highley. This time I was in the front coach, so much more entertaining to my ears. The next departure from Highley was 50033, so I was able to sample all three Hoovers that were in action. Seen here preparing to shunt the stock into the platform at Highley prior to departure - apologies for the raindrops on the lens, but it was peeing it down:

DSC_0552.JPG

Back at Kidderminster I purchased a hot chocolate to warm me up, and then got a bit soaked heading back to my car. However, I endured the rain for a couple of minutes more to get a few shots of Number 9 waiting to depart:

DSC_0562.JPG

Despite the weather, a very good day. Three Hoovers, two Westerns, a Whistler and a Deltic for haulage, including three scratches in the book. And best of all, I managed to avoid the Goyle (31466).

Despite your nasty digs at Goyles, some great photos there. 40106 is by far my most travelled behind 40.

Thank you. It wasn't great weather for photography - fog in the morning and then the rain.

Every time I read one of your moves behind 106 I was painfully aware that I hadn't had it.

I didn't even get a chance to photograph the 31. I didn't actively avoid it, it just didn't align with the moves I wanted to do.

I forgot to mention that the 46 had failed on Thursday so wasn't working on Friday. This worked to my advantage as with one loco short everything had to step up a turn at Bridgnorth, so Alycidon ran round and went straight back rather than waiting for an hour.

Never mind the rain @xotGD. Actually I think maybe the just finished rain makes for some crisp shots. Nice photo of 50035, that is how I remember them - well for ages I never saw one except the pair on the front cover of my (1974 ?) Ian Allan loco book. My main stamping ground was Birmingham New Street so they were almost as mysterious as the 26s and 27s. By the time I was copping the 50s they were unwelcome usurpers of the beautiful Westerns !. Of course I would have been more familiar with the peaks (etc) than a 40 (another mysterious breed seen occasionally at Bescot). Your visit has late 1970s written all over it (apart from the railbus). Thanks for sharing the photos.

50035 was the first Hoover I saw - out of our front window as it passed through Bensham on the Doncaster Works test train to Newcastle. Thanks to large logo I could read the number through binoculars. I then had more runs behind it than any other 50, in particular when I spent a few months based in Slough - details up thread. It was good to catch up with it again.

I saw Westerns when we went on holiday to Cornwall in 1976. I wrote down the names of those I saw but then lost the piece of paper. I may have had some for haulage, but I'll never know.
