Start of 7 days track bashing in the Emerald Isle having arrived at Rosslare Harbour aboard MV Saint Brendan (IMO 7360605 which became Stena Normandica around that time - the ro-ro vessel is still in use named Moby Vincent based at Naples and as I type is moored in the harbour at Livorno. Always fun looking up the status of the old ferries :in use, scrapped, sunk(oops)!!!!). 47478 BS got me to Fishguard Harbour from Swansea to connect with the ferry.

Some interesting track and haulages for a first day. Dinant to Dinard and the Petite Ceinture the highlights track wise. Dinard had a very sparse seasonal service (might have been its last year) so it was breathe a sigh of relief when a bus turned up heading for St Malo via the road over the Barrage de la Rance.

Though now a part of a re-unified Germany in 1992 the East was still virtually as it was before the Fall of the Berlin Wall with little in the way of commercialisation. The narrow gauge was still operating as a public service hence the early start and there was a station cafe at Bergen auf Rügen serving wurst and mash (very tasty and helped to pacify the missus). I went back last year with a friend when Covid allowed (to finish off the track I didn't cover back in 1992) to find a huge change as expected after almost thirty years. Except of course 99.783 turned up on the narrow gauge train I went to catch the train to Göhren (cue a hasty change of plan that involved a bit of a hike that looked okay on the map. I found out the hard way the island of Rügen isn't flat) .

The ferry Kong Frederick IX was built in 1954 and was in service till 1997 before becoming a ferry museum in Nyborg, Denmark. The museum subsequently went bankrupt and the ferry was moved to India for scrapping. Some interesting haulages were to be had back in the day. The DB class 240 (MaK DE 1024 demonstrator) was especially unexpected.

In fact this loco worked right through to Edinburgh. I boarded the train at Carlisle (Penmanshiel diversions still in place) and was astonished to score a new NB 40. The trip to Edinburgh was distinctly chilly!

The Alpazur was a daily rail connection linking Geneva to Nice and vice versa involving a change of train at Digne les Bains between the standard gauge SNCF and the metre gauge Chemins de fer de Provence. the service lasted from 1959 till 1989 when the line between St Auban and Digne was closed.
