Another double-header from me:

Wednesday 26/04/78
Another evening spin between York and Leeds:
47462 1555 York – Leeds
40081 1706 Leeds – York
40058 1735 York – Leeds
45009 1906 Leeds – York

Sunday 26/04/81
I've told the story of this night previously in Part 2 of this thread:
https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/forty-years-ago-part-2.212881/#post-5064018

40028 0228 Peterborough – Newcastle via Selby, Stockton
47076 0745 Newcastle – York
55008 1143 York – Kings Cross

Mon 26/04/82
I was travelling from my parents' house in Plymouth back home to London. The plan was to do the 0605 Plymouth – Liverpool as far as Newton Abbot to pick up the 0652 Newton Abbot – Exeter St Davids local service, which was booked for a 50, then take the southern route into Waterloo.
47531 0605 Plymouth – Newton Abbot
We got stopped at the bottom of Hemerdon bank as the Laira – Newton Abbot ECS with 50035 + 50041 on the front was having problems. It made it up Hemerdon OK, and we passed it in the loop. I alighted at Newton Abbot, pleased with the prospect of having a pair on the local, then they went storming straight through, non-stop to Exeter! An ECS HST was procured to run in its place:
43133 + 43134 0652 Newton Abbot – Exeter St Davids
There 50041 (alone) was waiting for me on the Waterloo:
50041 0737 Exeter St Davids – Waterloo

Tuesday 26/04/88
A quiet little track bash with a friend visiting from Poland. (I was off work sick, as I'd fallen off a ladder and broken both wrists and jarred my neck, so I was festooned in splints, braces, and bandages, restricting my movements somewhat).:
47503 1158 Crewe – Chester
DMU Chester – Ellesmere Port
DMU Ellesmere Port – Helsby
DMU Helsby – Warrington Bank Quay
86102 1736 Warrington Bank Quay – Crewe

Thursday 26/04/90
Attending some form of railway exhibition at the NEC:
50024 0946 Reading – Coventry
90038 1116 Coventry – Birmingham International
Afterwards, I decided to take the scenic route home …
86236 1458 Birmingham International – Birmingham New Street
31454 1529 Birmingham New Street – Crewe
37431 1801 Crewe – Cardiff Central
43046 + 43144 2155 Cardiff Central – Reading
_________________________________________________________________

Sunday 27/04/75 "Western Enterprise" Railtour
1023 + 1051 0951 Reading – Bristol Temple Meads via Bristol Parkway
1023 + 1051 1132 Bristol Temple Meads – Birmingham New Street via Bristol Parkway, Gloucester Eastgate, Lickey
1023 + 1051 1455 Birmingham New Street – Reading via Solihull
My first – and last – visit to Gloucester Eastgate station.

Wednesday 27/04/88
A trip to the NRM with my Polish friend:
87003 0901 Crewe – Stockport
53812 + 53355 Stockport – Stalybridge
47487 1006 Stalybridge – York
47487 1553 York – Manchester Victoria
EMU Manchester Piccadilly – Crewe

Wednesday 27/04/83 – Thursday 28/04/83

Armed with some (wrong) gen, I took a half day off work and went on a 40 bash …
45140 1354 York – Manchester Victoria
40057 1545 Manchester Victoria – Bangor (This had been allocated 40034)
40057 1925 Bangor – Manchester Victoria

It's entirely possible I was on The Bangor that day, but I'll probably never know now unless my missing books turn up

Well, my 40 moves listings did turn up...

Wednesday 27th April 1983

40057 WBQ to Bangor, 1D21 15.45 Man Vic to Bangor
40057 Bangor to WBQ, 1J31 19.25 Bangor to Man Vic

There you go...

And in later years...

Saturday 27th April 1985

86226 Wolverhampton to Coventry
87014 Coventry to Wolverhampton
HST Wolverhampton to Birmingham NS
86103 Birmingham NS to Coventry
50043 Coventry to Birmingham NS
45130 Birmingham NS to Derby
31446 Derby to Birmingham NS
47600 Birmingham NS to Birmingham International
47599 Birmingham Int to Birmingham NS
87011 Birmingham NS to Wolverhampton

Scored the hoover, the wagon, the goyle and the two duffs. The electrics were all dud, although by 1986 I'd either had them all for haulage or pretty much so. I never appeared record the HST power cars.

The hoover and wagon were on the 09.40 Poole to Newcastle, the goyle and the first Duff on the 13.22 Hull to Brighton (!), the second Duff on the 14.13 Portsmouth to York.

Sunday 27th April 1986

87012 Wolverhampton to Coventry (via Bescot, Perry Bar and Soho Junc)
47434 Coventry to Wolverhampton (same diversion)
50004 Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury
50004 Shrewsbury to Wolverhampton

The Duff was on the 10.52 Gatwick to Liverpool when Liverpool had a range of services to places in the South and South West. The hoover was on a Euston to Shrewsbury service; I do not remember those services having anything other than duffs, but hey ho, it obviously did on this day 35 years ago.

We've been discussing Arnside over on Becca's thread, and 3 years ago today that is where I was. A mini break to coincide with our wedding anniversary.

This was the view from our bedroom window:

Arnside 1.jpg

And after breakfast I wandered out to capture a similar working in the other direction:

Arnside 2.jpg

Both services were a 68 + 88 combo.

Poor picture quality as a result of using an old phone camera.

I was thinking more in terms of posting two days at the same time, but I see your point ...

Anyway, here is my final contribution:

EMU Manchester Piccadilly – Crewe
Thursday 28/04/88
A visit to my parents with my Polish friend:
86435 1102 Crewe – Birmingham New Street
47542 1415 Birmingham New Street – Plymouth

Tuesday 28/04/92
I had to attend a meeting in Mossend the following day, so you might have expected me to travel from Euston. Not so – for a short period there was a through sleeper from Poole to Glasgow Central, which ran as a 4-coach portion as far as Birmingham New Street, and attached there to the overnight from Bristol to Glasgow / Edinburgh.
47851 2245 Reading – Birmingham New Street
(Wednesday 29/04/92)
86233 0143 Birmingham New Street – Glasgow Central

Duffs and Cans, Cans and Duffs. It's a year since I started contributing to this thread, so (at last) I've gone all the way round the calendar. It's been a lot of fun reliving all the old moves 1975 - 2000, but now it's time for me to sign off from this thread. Many thanks to my fellow contributors.

Have enjoyed your posts over the last year @CW2. Thank you for sharing.

Saturday 28th April 1990

An afternoon trip to Leamington, and my last mainline run behind a Hoover. Time was almost up for them on the Birmingham NS to Paddington route by then.

47809 12:54 Derby-Birmingham NS
50026 13:45 Birmingham NS-Leamington

40057 WBQ to Bangor, 1D21 15.45 Man Vic to Bangor
40057 Bangor to Newton-le-Willows, 1J31 19.25 Bangor to Man Vic

Plus 1986 that I posted a year ago...

Monday 28th April 1986

85022 Wolverhampton to Coventry
86249 Coventry to Birmingham NS
87017 Birmingham NS to Wolverhampton

Er, that's it from my moves books.

Always good to get a roarer, but my class listings show I'd originally scored 85022 from Warrington BQ to Crewe on 16th April 1982. Those class listings show I had 38 out of the 40 in the class, just missing out on 001 and 033. The first one I had was 85021 from Warrington to Carstairs and back on 22nd April 1978 which was a day trip to Edinburgh if I remember correctly. The last one was 85023 from Birmingham NS to Wolverhampton on 6th June 1988.

Thanks for all your posts. Takes me back to my early years. I will miss the reminiscences.

Be nice if there was some way of rounding up later posts with those from the same date(s) a year before. Although, then again, that might bury more recent contributions.

Ten years ago today I went salsa dancing in Manchester so could've taken a train to get to the venue and back. Might've been a bus, however seeing as I was in Chester during the day, it was probably a train

Thanks also to CW2. Amazing amount of train travel.

It’s a pity a number of old members no long post who would have added even more to this thread (thinking of ?Phil Wood and Keith Jarrett).

The other day I mentioned a trip to Blackpool back in 2019. There happened to be a Nedex running that day, with differing forms of traction at each end...

I shall echo the other contributors in thanking you for a very interesting and entertaining year. I'm going to continue for a wee while longer, as my anniversary doesn't come up until the beginning of June....plus I've discovered a few more notebooks recently from various different years and others may yet surface. However, I shall try very hard not to repeat myself.

Meanwhile, I've three days to catch-up on following a short trip away:

WEDNESDAY 26th APRIL 1978:

Once again making a concerted effort to clear the Eastleigh Cromptons for haulage - and any Hither Green examples which happened to turn up - on my way home from work the long way round:

7743/7802/7709 Petersfield-Waterloo (06 23 from Portsmouth Harbour)
5126/5106 08 12 Waterloo-Wimbledon (to Effingham Junction)
5931/5905/5930/5934 Wimbledon-Waterloo (18 05 Chessington South-Waterloo)
33 019 19 00 Waterloo-Woking (to Exeter SD. Consist: W5363/3087/1772/14069/14080/5457/5489/5471 Load 8 AB/EH)
7818/5131 Woking-Guildford (18 52 from Waterloo)
7830/7834 Guildford-Petersfield (19 20 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour)

FRIDAY 26th APRIL 1985:

47 606 East Croydon-Gatwick Airport (1O62, 06 01 from Derby. Consist: M5310/5607/5581/5482/13555/6528/5560/5423/92199 Load 9 AB/EH)
47 606 Gatwick Airport-East Croydon (1M07, 13 22 Gatwick Airport-Manchester Piccadilly. Consist: As above in reverse order)
47 597 East Croydon-Gatwick Airport (1O74, 09 58 from Manchester Piccadilly. Consist: M92172/6526/5372/5378/13527/5403/5502/5505/5415
Load 9 AB/EH)

Well now, I thought I had three days to catch-up on....but, checking in my books, I see there's nothing now until 30th April, so my fingers and keyboard can have a well-deserved rest! :D

You always seem to end up at Gatwick having started at East Croydon. How do you get back ?.

At that time I was working as a guard at Brighton and the Inter-City trains which normally ran through to and from that station were turning round at Gatwick due to the Brighton remodelling and resignalling works. During that period, the turn of duty involved booking on at 08 30-ish; working the 08 52 Brighton-Victoria (via Hove); travelling passenger to East Croydon; working the three Inter-City services; then travelling back passenger from East Croydon to Brighton and finishing. Quite a nice little 'office hours' shift, with a bit of loco-haulage thrown in to the mix!

Many thanks from me also for your interesting and entertaining recollections, I only wish I had thought to keep such detailed records !

Anyway, here is today's contribution from me; In April 1986 BR decided to send me and a number of other railway supervisory grades on a course at Loch Eil Outward Bound, so on Monday 28th we travelled down from Glasgow:
37423 0950 Glasgow Queen St-Fort William

Loch Eil Outward Bound had a fairly recently opened station, however it was a request stop. You can probably guess what happened next;
37425 1405 Fort William-Mallaig (to Locheilside)

Yes, not one of us thought to speak to the Guard so we were overcarried ! We huddled in a waiting shelter against the rain until the centre sent a minibus to pick us up. Not the most impressive start to the course.....

I remember those courses, but somehow I managed to avoid them. I bet you got the p#55 taken out of you when you eventually arrived!

A Merrymaker excursion to Llandudno from Nottingham. Alighted at Llandudno Junction outgoing, and caught a service train for a run out to Holyhead and back.

47202 Beeston-Llandudno Junction
47539 Llandudno Junction-Holyhead
DMU Holyhead-Bangor
47529 Bangor-Llandudno Junction
DMU Llandudno Junction-Llandudno

On arriving at Llandudno our return excursion was waiting departure, and surprisingly had 40023 at its head. The 40 worked the Merrymaker to Crewe, then came off to be replaced by a Duff. Unusual to have loco changes on those excursions, they were normally out and home workings.

Of course ! (but as railway staff we were used to that....)

Another memorable thing about the course was being encouraged to climb a huge tree, known as Big George, in the grounds, which most of us did (and I got quite near the top.... very scary !) I bought one of the T-shirts they sold there with the words 'I've been up Big George'. Not sure either would be allowed now, climbing the tree or the shirts.

I have been reading this thread for several months now and believe it to be one of the best features on here. I have now decided to start adding some of my own.

Saturday 29th April 2000

90025 0810 Kings Cross-Leeds
90025 1105 Leeds-Kings Cross
86237 1400 Liverpool St - Ipswich
86221 1542 Ipswich - Liverpool St
86221 1730 Liverpool St - Manningtree
321354 1839 Manningtree - Colchester
86232 1902 Colchester - Liverpool St

The first and only occasion that I had 90025 for haulage.

Monday 29th April 2019

91102 1130 Kings Cross - Peterborough
91121 1230 Peterborough - Kings Cross
90039 1406 Kings Cross - Newark
90039 1556 Newark - Kings Cross

As a resident of Kent, there is a vast collection of EMU travel which will largely not be included.

47536 Wolverhampton to Oxford

This was on the 06. 45 Wolverhampton to Poole and my ticket was a Blue Saver, cost £7.60. I don't remember that sort of ticket. Anyone? I returned on 4th May with better haulage. Was visiting then girlfriend/future wife.

The only other 30th April in the moves books I have was a Thursday in 1992 when I appear to have had a couple of nights in London when I returned from Paddington to Oxford on a double unit - 165033 and 165030. How exciting. My outward journey to London on Tuesday 28th April which I missed earlier in the thread was on a Tram, number not recorded.

On 30th April 1983 my class listings show 85028 from Liverpool Lime St to Crewe, so not sure what else was going on around that. Something 40 related, I guess.

I doubt I'll have something for every day, but I'll look through my books. Some bits I may need help with, ie the odd missing loco number.
