SATURDAY 27th MARCH 1976:

A fine day out to York on a Southern Region 'Pleasure Seeker' ADEX, originating at Portsmouth Harbour:

47 487 Petersfield-Dudding Hill Junction via Chertsey, Kew East Junction and Acton Wells Junction
45 025 Dudding Hill Junction-York via Leicester, Alfreton, Barrow Hill, Cudworth and Castleford
47 121 York-Petersfield via same route as outward

Not sure of the reason for the loco change in the Cricklewood area on the outward trip - or the different loco on the return - but all three locos were required, so I wasn't complaining. Also it was my first time over the 'old road' between Tapton Junction and Masborough Junction.

SATURDAY 27th MARCH 1983:

Returning North after visiting my (soon to be ex-) girlfriend in London:

87 024 22 55 Euston-Carlisle (continuing to Glasgow via Dumfries in the morning) (Consist: M92156/81240/10568/10695/10565/10689/5984/5933/
5932/6179/5919/6150/80876. Load 13 AB/EH)

By this time the Euston-Glasgow overnights had switched to air-braked air-conditioned stock with brand new Mark 3 sleepers. No more cosy, comfy compartments for the seated passengers! This was the only time I was ever hauled by 87 024.

SATURDAY 27th MARCH 2010:

En route to our place in Italy again:

373 232/231 ES 9018, 10 25 London St Pancras International-Paris Nord
RER Line 'D' Gare du Nord-Gare de Lyon
TGV 4501 EC 9249, 15 24 Paris Lyon-Modane via Lyon St Exupery & St Andre-le-Gaz
TGV 4506 EC 9249, 19 30 Modane-Bardonecchia

This was one of the (now increasingly frequent) occasions when the voltage switchover equipment on a TGV-Reseau set refused to reconfigure into 3000 v DC Italian mode....resulting in a cross-platform set swap with the train coming in the other direction from Milano to Paris - and a 45 minute delay. On another occasion, we had to do it in mid-winter with more than two feet of snow on the platforms at Modane....and, to cap it all, the two sets were not the same way round, resulting in a mad scramble through the snow by first class passengers and their luggage from one end of the platform to the other!

My bold - It occurs to me that the old compartment stock was the nearest the UK got to anything as useful as a Couchette ?.

40109 1109 York – Leeds (Relief)
40007 1154 Leeds – York (Relief)
Required 40s both ways. The evening was less impressive:
46043 1906 Leeds – York

(Tuesday 27/03/79)
55006 2323 York – 10 miles south of Carstairs via High Level Bridge, Scotswood
Wednesday 28/03/79
I was somehow fast asleep at Newcastle (or so the story goes). I "awoke" to witness 55006 struggling slowly up Beattock at 25 mph on One Engine Only on load 12. We made it over the top all right, but then ground to a halt on the descent, with the air compressor frozen solid in the arctic temperatures. I learned this because the guard walked forward along the snow-covered ballast to find out what was going on, and the driver walked back to meet him. They converged just beneath my window, when the Haymarket driver uttered the immortal phrase:
"Aye Doogie, Yon big engine's a failure."
We sat for a long time, blocking the railway and awaiting assistance. A southbound Freightliner powered by a class 40 came hammering by, on the southbound climb to Beattock, through a blizzard. Eventually, a rescue loco arrived:
81006 (propelling) 04xx 10 miles south of Carstairs – Carstairs
Here it got even more complicated. The direct route from Carstairs to Edinburgh was blocked by snowdrifts, so we had to take the "scenic" route – and there's a required 40 come to haul us:
40166 (+55006 dead) 05xx Carstairs – Edinburgh via Motherwell, Shotts
We arrived at Edinburgh at 0655, which was 133' late on the revised "Penmanshiel" timetable, which was itself 85 minutes later than the normal timings.
On arrival at Edinburgh I had to explain that I had overslept, and could they please endorse my ticket so that I could take the first available service back to Newcastle?
43108 + 43104 0730 Edinburgh – Dunbar
Bus Dunbar – Berwick upon Tweed (along the A1, passing the Penmanshiel tunnel collapse site)
43080 + 43060 0855 Berwick upon Tweed – Newcastle
Of course I could have stayed on the HST all the way back to York, but there was something better on offer:
55014 1020 Newcastle – York
I think I got plenty of value for money out of my £4.98p student return to Newcastle …

Friday 28/03/80
86222 0011 Crewe – Stockport
40057 0051 Stockport – York via Denton Jn, OA&GB Jn

Sunday 28/03/82
47441 0020 Crewe – Stafford
47560 0107 Stafford – Crewe
47479 0407 Crewe – Stafford
47490 0350 Stafford – Manchester Piccadilly via Stoke
I made this minus connection at Stafford thanks to the introduction of British Summer Time putting the clocks forward at 0200, meaning this train was running an hour later than normal (BST).
47090 0840 Manchester Piccadilly – Stockport
DMU Stockport – Manchester
47490 1042 Manchester Piccadilly – Stockport
DMU Stockport – Stalybridge via Piccadilly
47401 1233 Stalybridge – York
43051 + 43118 1810 York – Kings Cross via Selby
Some days are better than others. This day falls firmly in the "others" category.

Monday 28/03/83
Word reached me that 40028 was on the 1405 Liverpool – Newcastle …
47489 1254 York – Manchester Victoria
40028 1449 Manchester Victoria – Newcastle
It got even better when 40028 was turned back out for the 2100 to Kings Cross, a mere load 13!
40028 2100 Newcastle – Kings Cross
That was the end of its passenger exploits for a while. It did the 0405 vans to Peterborough, then 7D61 freight trip to Sleaford, and promptly derailed!

Wednesday 28/03/84
DMU Leeds – Hull
31430 1545 Hull – Selby
DMU 1644 Selby – York
40028 1710 York – Leeds
47523 1801 Leeds – York

Thursday 28/03/85
A rest day off work, so I had arranged to take my wife for a ride over the Highland Main Line and the Far North Line. The Edinburgh traction controller took it upon himself to provide me with something a little better than the usual 47 for my journey north:
47708 0725 Glasgow Queen Street – Stirling
27023 + 27012 0805 Stirling – Inverness (Bless you Andy!)
37114 1130 Inverness – Wick
37114 1800 Wick – Inverness
47520 2350 Inverness – Glasgow Queen Street

Tuesday 28/03/89
5407 1510 Crewe – Chester – Shrewsbury – Crewe

If the Traction Controller was who I think it was (now sadly no longer with us) I'm surprised it wasn't a named WR 47 on that diagram !
Indeed! He was the best loco controller I ever met, and would quietly run rings around his colleagues without them even noticing. Just occasionally there would be an explosion when one of them suddenly found themselves thoroughly and professionally stitched up! As I was a relief controller and got on well with him, I was usually exempted from being on the receiving end of his skills, thank goodness. He taught me a lot about the job, and more particularly about planning 24 hours ahead, rather than just aiming to get through the shift.

28th March 1987

I was back home for Easter, but still had a chance to take advantage of the March cheap ticket deal one final time...

45140 Newcastle - Leeds 1O09
45125 Leeds - Manchester Victoria 1M58
31453 Manchester Pic- Liverpool Lime Street 1M30

I then popped downstairs for a quick loop around the city, followed by a pint before heading home...

47527 Liverpool Lime Street - Newcastle 1E88

Once TPE start running 68s to Liverpool with some degree of regularity I might have to head back.

28th March 1992

West Midlands wanderings, just for a change...

87019, 87004, 87012, 90010, 90013, 86103, 86225, 90012, 87034 and 90008 for haulage. One trip to Wolverhampton, five trips to Coventry.

Gosh. I looked at that date and thought he obviously does not recall the year !. It was a second thought that 99 was a valid year !. Still seems strange, maybe I need more coffee.

Funny enough, I was just drinking a cup of coffee when I read that!
Strange to think that 91s have been around for over 30 years (and are still going strong on Kings Cross to Leeds services).

....although, unfortunately, they're not getting many outings at the moment - the DVTs seem determined not to play fairly. Meanwhile:

SATURDAY 29th MARCH 1975:

Another Southern Region 'Pleasure Seeker' ADEX....this time to Alfreton & Mansfield Parkway (as it was called then), with an optional coach tour of the Peak District. My friends and I did an optional spotting tour of Nottingham and Derby instead:

47 515 08 12 Petersfield-Alfreton via Reading, Banbury, Solihull, Saltley, Stenson Junction, Sheet Stores Junction (new track!) and Toton.
45 148 13 31 Alfreton-Nottingham
M50667/59290/50713 14 39 Nottingham-Derby
M50718/59263/50684 15 47 Derby-Nottingham
47 167 17 05 Nottingham-Alfreton
47 515 18 00 Alfreton-Petersfield - same route as outward journey.

Passing the now-demolished Castle Donnington Power Station, CEGB 0-4-0 saddle tank loco was seen in steam shunting coal wagons.

SUNDAY 29th MARCH 2009:

Returning from Italy after an overnight stay with friends at Casale Monferrato, near Vercelli:

TGV 4505 EC 9242, 08 57 Vercelli-Paris Lyon (08 15 from Milano PG)
RER Line 'D' Gare de Lyon-Gare du Nord
373 013/014 ES 9047, 17 13 Paris Nord-London St Pancras International
91 xxx Kings Cross-Leeds
333 xxx Leeds-Skipton

I know. It feels like the 91s will be withdrawn prematurely but then I think back to my beloved Westerns and Deltics. Less than 20 years in service for those. Funny how time plays tricks on the brain - I have often thought that each year now I am older feels shorter than each of my early years because a year now is a smaller proportion of my whole life.

Genuine question from someone not au fait with the WCML pre pendolino scene, but why are the class 86s so hated on here? As a layman they look and sound the same to me as an 87 etc, but as I said I have no expertise whatsoever on them, so genuinely interested to know why there is so much derision for them?!, thanks.

It's mostly just familiarity breeding contempt. They worked so many of the WCML passenger services that the older class 81 - 85 became increasingly rare on passenger. Also their unsprung weight meant that they were very punishing to the track, resulting in the ride quality deteriorating rapidly, and the number of broken rails soaring. The extensive rebuild programme which produced separate 86/0 86/1 86/2 86/3 86/4 86/5 and 86/6 subclasses went a long way to resolving those issues, with unmodified locos restricted to a maximum of 80 mph (and thus suitable for freight only). The 86/1s were the forerunners of the 87s, and were often exempted from the general "can" loathing. It was worst when you turned up for a train expecting a long run with an 87, and got an 86/2 instead. It didn't matter how well it ran, it was just an 86/2, and that was enough to make the whole journey seem tedious.

Can't really add much to that. I would say that I think the 87s did have a slightly different whine and, boy, they were a handsome loco. The two windows give a certain sharpness to my eye too. But I think I agree that the real reason was the familiarity breeding contempt thing.

By the way, I did record 86 haulage, but I have some moves books missing and the sort of day I have detailed here is from my books for separate classes from which I can recreate partial days where the moves book is missing. I didn't have a separate book for 86s (or ETH Duffs, of course).

Basically, an 86 is a 47 with a pantograph. The tat that bowled you out when you were hoping for or expecting something better.

Leeds versus Sheffield United was the big match today, and it had brought two footexes from Sheffield this morning. Going back after the match, the first train was allocated a pair of 31s, and the second train was 40033. For novelty value, the trains were departing from Leeds Parcels Concentration Depot (to keep the Sheffield fans segregated from the Normals). The second special with 40033 was cancelled due to lack of demand! Oh well, I'll take the 31s anyway.

Running via Copley Hill was very much a novelty back then, but that was the only way to get towards Wakefield when departing from the PCD.
43169 + 43182 1910 Sheffield – York via Rotherham Masborough, Moorthorpe

Sunday 31/03/85
Having arrived at Perth on a late-running ADEX from Liverpool behind a pair of 26s, the only way out was a long doss in the stock of the 0400 departure to Inverness, then a trip to Lairg and return. So be it.
47108 0400 Perth – Inverness
In place of the anticipated 37, there's another pair of 26s for the Lairg papers:
26041 + 26038 0850 Inverness – Lairg
26038 + 26041 1057 Lairg – Inverness
Time for a meal back at Inverness before returning for the inevitable 47 over the Highland Main Line. Ooh, hello, what's this?
26041 + 26038 1700 Inverness – Edinburgh via Perth, Ladybank
A fantastic day for class 26 mileage. By then, runs over the Highland Main Line on passenger were quite rare, with everything normally solid class 47.
47702 2130 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk Grahamston
I think (but can't confirm for certain) that the pair of 26s went back north on the 0706 Edinburgh – Inverness via Stirling the following morning.

Wednesday 31/03/99

A fantastic day for class 26 mileage.

You've had 26038 for a few more miles than me; It was one of the few Inverness 26s I never had in BR days. I did eventually ride behind it on the 28th December 2019, but just from Boness to the 28 1/4 mp where it failed !
