Sunday 14th February 1988 - Day 4 of 4

Probably the most remarkable thing the ECML had to offer on this particular Sunday was absolutely no diversions whatsoever - remarkable in itself but hardly a recipe for excitement. Still, despite the fairly predictable traction, the fact that an "easy" end-to-end loco-hauled run was achievable at a convenient time wasn't to be ignored:

47523 Edinburgh Waverley 11.40 - York 15.13 (7L): 1O07 Glasgow Central to Poole

47665 York 15.25 (9L) - Doncaster 16.04 (1E): 1O07 Glasgow Central to Poole

47660 Doncaster 16.24 (2L) - Kings Cross 18.43 (15E): 1A23 15.45 Leeds to Kings Cross

A combination of that early arrival, luck on the Circle Line and staff shortages on the Western Region (now, where have we heard that before?) enabled the achievement of a +2 connection between Kings Cross and Paddington

43170+? Paddington 18.45 (20L) - Bristol Temple Meads 20.19 (18L): 18.45 Paddington to Bristol TM

Less than 1p a mile!

Monday 14th February 1983

Half term and I appear to have some sort of North West Rover. First half of the week looks like it focused on 87s, second half on 40s, well mainly one 40.

I think I'm only missing two Can moves on this day (or maybe a Can and an EMU). Had a quarter of all the 87s today!

Can (?) WBQ to Crewe
87001 Crewe to Preston, 1S59 09.35 Euston to Inverness
87013 Preston to Lancaster, 1S68 09.32 Nottingham to Glasgow
87030 Lancaster to Crewe, 1M27 11.15 Glasgow to Birmingham
87012 Crewe to Preston, 1S71 14.05 Birmingham to Glasgow
87007 Preston to WBQ, 1A75 14.33 Carlisle to Euston
87014 WBQ to Preston, 1P63 14.00 Euston to Carlisle
87016 Preston to Crewe, 1M42 10.30 Inverness to Euston
87011 Crewe to Runcorn, 1M07 14.50 Paddington to Liverpool
Can/EMU (?) Runcorn to Crewe
87019 Crewe to WBQ, 1P79 18.05 Euston to Blackpool

86238 New St - Cov 1A41

Coventry City 3 Chelsea 0

I went with a Chelsea fan, and was in the away end. My first (and only) experience of Chelsea fans singing "The Celery Song". One lad was arrested after a police office was hit by a stick of celery he had thrown.

After being escorted back to the station along with the Head Hunters, we must have caught a unit back to Brum.

West Yorkshire had frozen solid. Everything was at a standstill. I was going home from college in Harrogate to York. There were no trains running direct to York, so I took the only available option, a DMU to Leeds. At Leeds, almost everything was at a standstill. Eventually, a class 40 arrived from Neville Hill, towing 5 Mk 1 coaches, and was announced as running to York. I baled on, expecting that they would unhook the 40 to run round, or maybe we were going via Methley? Nope, we are going back via Harrogate!
40109 1657 Leeds – York via Harrogate
The train was utterly wedged, so I stood in the front vestibule. There was neither heat nor light which made going through Bramhope Tunnel an interesting experience, as the 40 smashed into a load of ice stalactites which had formed, sending lethal shards of ice in all directions.
The journey time was 3 hours, much of which was spent stationary adjacent to MP1 at Clifton, just outside York station, due to points being frozen. About 300 passengers (yes, seriously, it was that wedged) decided it was simpler to jump out of the train and walk home from there. The guard was trying to persuade them to stay on board, but they were having none of it, so the doors were flung open and they leapt into the snow and down the embankment, and away home along ice-covered streets.
One particular individual had been trying to summon up the courage to “abandon ship” and decided to do so on the opposite side to everybody else, adjacent to the northbound running line. He flung the door open, and jumped – and landed up to his armpits in a deep snow-filled trough. At that precise moment the signal cleared, and we moved off into York station, leaving him there to dig himself out of his snowy pit!
Harrogate – York was difficult to do loco-hauled, so I was particularly pleased with this move, especially as it was a class 40. I only wish the boiler had been working!

Friday 15/02/80
40066 2315 Kings Cross – Edinburgh via Selby

Monday 15/02/82
There was another rail strike scheduled for the following day, so I played my “get out of town” card:

50049 1322 Reading – Paddington
87031 1900 Euston – Crewe
86224 2120 Crewe – Warrington Bank Quay
47530 2142 Warrington Bank Quay – Manchester Victoria
47455 2237 Manchester Victoria – Holyhead
… and onto the overnight sailing to Dun Laoghaire.

Tuesday 15/02/83
Returning home from a couple of weeks in Poland, via Hungary, Yugoslavia, Austria, Germany and Belgium:
68002 (MLV) + 1582 + 1523 + 1585 1433 Dover Priory – Victoria
43105 + 43094 1637 Kings Cross – York via Selby

Thursday 15/02/96
Another work trip:
87001 1440 Euston – Preston
86226 1725 Preston – Crewe 30’ late
90004 1915 Crewe – Euston

Sunday 15/02/98

A few moves missing from this day I think, but they must have been Duffs, units or cans.

85017 WBQ to Crewe
87026 Crewe to Preston (via Earlestown), 1S53 08.10 Birmingham to Glasgow

Saturday 15th February 1986

Another £4 Fab Feb Saver....

87015 Wolves to Euston, 1A17 06.25 Chester to Euston
73138 Victoria to Gatwick Airport, 11.30 Victoria to Gatwick Airport
73118 Gatwick Airport to Victoria, 12.35 Gatwick Airport to Victoria
87020 Euston to Wolverhampton, 14.40 Euston to Wolverhampton

The only time I had 73 haulage.

Monday 15th February 1988

Return trip from girlfriend and a change from the usual duff. I'm sure I could have got more Hoover haulage if I'd tried on these journeys between the West Mids and Oxford, but it wasn't the priority.

50025 Oxford to Birmingham NS, 11.17 Paddington to Birmingham NS
86407 Birmingham NS to Wolves, 12.40 Euston to Wolves

I was also taking advantage of the £4 offer today*, and had one of the same locos for haulage as @NorthWestRover ...

47455 New St - Crewe 1M10
33052 Crewe - Bangor 1D27 (Not "The Bangor"!)
33052 Bangor - Shrewsbury 1V33
47619 Shrewsbury - Wolves 1A74
87015 Wolves - New St 1A74

*Actually, I was using two outward portions, (Brum to Bangor and Bangor to Brum), saving the return portions for later. Another one of those occasions when the woman in the student union travel centre thought I was mad when I asked for my frog.

43066 + 43067 1620 Harrogate – Leeds
This was 8’ late, having only arrived at Harrogate from Kings Cross at 1605.
46051 1707 Leeds – York 10’ late.

Saturday 16/02/80
Having arrived at Edinburgh behind 40066 all the way from Kings Cross, it was time to make my way back south:
47541 0728 Edinburgh – Carstairs
87005 0812 Carstairs – Carlisle
45056 0935 Carlisle – Leeds 20’ late awaiting connections off the G&SW.
47420 1659 Leeds – York
It was good that I avoided the southern end of the WCML today, as a Freightliner train had derailed and remodelled Hartford Junction in an impromptu manner, and 87007 had also derailed at Bushey. This was to influence my moves over the coming days.

Tuesday 16/02/82
Off the night sailing from Holyhead, and across the road onto the Dublin suburban service:
216 0725 Dun Laoghaire – Dublin Connolly
159 + 122 0830 Dublin Connolly – Sligo
Bus Sligo – Ballina
005 1805 Ballina – Claremorris
081 1912 Claremorris – Roscommon
133+ 125 2012 Roscommon - Westport

Friday 16/02/90
After spending the evening at Stratford Freightliner Terminal, I had a lift home to Reading:
47016 0155 Stratford FLT – Reading via Camden Road, Willesden Jn High Level, Acton Wells
Cabride, hauling 13 freightliner vehicles destined to Cardiff FLT.

87007 didn't derail, but the train behind it did! The derailment resulted in the first two Mark 3s being written off (12039/162).

Our trip to York appears to have been a bit of a meander, outwards. Probably due to the on going service disruptions caused by the arctic weather conditions, which @CW2 has mentioned.

31228 09:28 Derby-Sheffield
DMU 10:21 Sheffield-Doncaster
47526 11:21 Doncaster-Leeds
DMU 12:56 Leeds-York

(31407+37226) noted on snowplough duty near Sheffield.

Return was more direct.

46027 0115 York – Doncaster via Selby
40086 0302 Doncaster – Bradford Exchange via Askern, Knottingley, Featherstone, Wakefield Kirkgate – Westgate, Leeds
A fine bit of diversionary track, the Featherstone section being required track for me.
DMU Bradford Exchange – Leeds
Word had filtered through of the additional dragging and diversions taking place because of the Freightliner derailment at Hartford Junction, so it had to be done:
45002 0742 Leeds – Birmingham New Street via Viaduct, Wakefield Westgate – Kirkgate, Crofton West, Hare Park, Moorthorpe, Sheffield (reverse), Beighton, Whitacre Jn
40113 1305 Birmingham New Street – Runcorn, diverted via Chester Triangle, Frodsham, Halton Jn.
At Runcorn I dropped straight onto a Control Relief Liverpool – Euston, a 40 on Air Cons:
40056 1625 Runcorn – Crewe via Halton Jn., Frodsham, Chester Triangle
Trains towards Preston and beyond were diverting from Crewe via Stockport, and getting dragged Stockport to Preston. I decided I’d give that a go:
86205 1802 Crewe – Stockport
This re-engined to 40117, but that was a relatively common Longsight boilered loco, whereas big required NB split box 40132 and 40143 were sitting middle road at Stockport waiting to work the subsequent trains. So I alighted to claim my prize(s) …
I stood back and watched in admiration as 40117 stormed off into the distance…. at which point the main line reopened, and the dragging stopped! I may have said a few naughty words at that precise juncture. Oh well, it had still been a pretty good day both for 40s and for new track (Featherstone, Halton Curve).
86015 2018 Stockport – Crewe
86008 2330 Crewe – Preston, 20’ late.
However, I never did get 40132 for haulage. So close, and yet so far …

Tuesday 17/02/81
40061 0002 Kings Cross – Doncaster
47458 04xx Doncaster – Kings Cross
This was the 1925 Aberdeen – Kings Cross which wasn’t an advertised stop at Doncaster.

Wednesday 17/02/82
After a night in a B&B at Westport, it was time for more Irish locos – starting with the same pair I’d arrived with the previous night:
125 + 133 0750 Westport – Portarlington
074 1113 Portarlington – Ballybrophy 45’ late
156 1150 Ballybrophy – Limerick via Nenagh 45->40’ late
185 1510 Limerick – Limerick Junction
161 1650 Limerick Junction – Rosslare Harbour Pier
On arrival at Rosslare Harbour Pier station I walked forward to chat to the driver and find out where my B&B was. He informed me it was nearer to the “Mainland” station, so I got a handy cab ride for the propelling move back to the mainland.

Friday 17/02/89
90019 1114 Crewe – Preston
86254 1151 Preston – Wigan North Western
142 047 Wigan North Western – Liverpool Lime Street
90014 1310 Liverpool Lime Street – Crewe
Two new 90s in the book – thank you.

Whistling away on a slightly more traditional route than @CW2's diversions in 1980...

Wednesday 17th February 1982

40033 Man Vic to Bangor, 1D57 13.45 Man Vic to Bangor
40033 Bangor to Man Vic, 1J39 16.52 Bangor to Man Vic

And a year later...

Thursday 17th February 1983

40106 WBQ to Bangor, 1D34 "The Bangor"
40106 Bangor to Man Vic, 1J30 "The Bangor"
40106 Man Vic to Bangor, 1D21 "The Bangor"
40106 Bangor to Man Vic, 1J31 "The Bangor "
And a nice bonus...
40086 Man Vic to St Helens J, 1M80 19.25 Scarborough to Lime St

033 and 106 were my favourite 40s. I never had 086 on the North Wales Coast, bizarrely.

40106 was something of a celebrity loco, being the last one in green livery (until 40122 got repainted). However it was never fitted with train air brakes, so its uses were limited to some extent. The Bangor was an ideal diagram for it, being VB Mk 1 stock. I never had 40086 in North Wales either - but maybe not so surprising as it was an ER loco rather than an LM one.

Just like a week earlier, I faffed about in the West Midlands. However, unlike the previous week, no Hoover or Roarer. Haulage from:

90015, 86222, 87030, 87026, 47527, 87022, 47446, 47833, 86430, 87033, 87015

17th February 1991

87015 New St - Wolves (via Bescot)
47586 Wolves - New St (via Bescot)

Same 87, exactly a year between moves.

The first time I had it was on 1E82, the Summer Saturday 13.53 Llandudno to York. But from Manchester to York.

The first time I had it was on 1E82, the Summer Saturday 13.53 Llandudno to York. But from Manchester to York.
That makes sense, as it was an out-and-back diagram for a York 40.

Meanwhile, here we go again ...

Monday 18/02/80
After a very busy Sunday, and a long overnight fester at Preston, it was time to head south. The 2200 Stranraer – Euston arrived with a required Roarer on the front. There was also an empty FC compartment, equipped with rugs and pillows, so I decided that was going to be my accommodation for the remainder of the night …
85016 0408 Preston – Crewe
47199 0520 Crewe – Euston
I was dossing so soundly at Crewe that I didn’t notice the (presumably failed) 85 being removed, and replaced by 47199, also required (and very No Heat). I awoke feeling a bit chilly somewhere around Tring. We were strumming ponderously along the Up Slow, with 47199 making furious dufficaceous noises on the front - hardly surprising on load 16.
90’ late into Euston.
At Euston I turned around and headed back the way I came:
86011 1005 Euston – Crewe
47486 1229 Crewe – Chester
… there to intercept the morning Bangor turn:
40019 1313 Chester – Manchester Victoria
Then time for a liquid lunch before heading south once more:
47072 1623 Manchester Piccadilly – Birmingham New Street via Stoke
This was a through train to Paddington, booked for a 50 from Birmingham. Unusually it was formed of steam heat only Mk 1s, hence the provision of the steam heat class 47 vice electric. Of course the 47 worked through to Paddington. I alighted at New Street for a little electric fill-in, prior to a rather better diesel to get me to Paddington:
86102 1855 Birmingham New Street – Wolverhampton
87020 1928 Wolverhampton – Birmingham New Street
50042 2042 Birmingham New Street – Paddington via Coventry

Thursday 18/02/82
Another earlyish start:
081 0735 Rosslare Harbour Pier – Dublin Heuston 40’ late due to electrification works
Rail Replacement Bus 1415 Dublin Connolly – Malahide
022 1503 Malahide – Belfast Central
022 1730 Belfast Central – Dublin Connolly
This only ran 10 minutes late, but that was just enough to miss the bus to Dun Laoghaire for the overnight sailing to Holyhead, so I had to get a taxi instead.

Monday 18/02/85
87012 0720 Glasgow Central – Crewe
I was off to Webb House, the BR-owned residential centre where various educational courses were held for railway staff. This was a “TOPS for Controllers” course lasting all week.

Wednesday 18/02/87
37260 2320 Glasgow Queen Street – Aberdeen
This was a relief service of some description. It was quite rare by then to get a 37 throughout from Glasgow to Aberdeen, so it had to be done. On arrival at Aberdeen I chose to doss in the stock of the 0500 to Perth, but some other 37 bashers stowed away on the ECS of the relief, which 37260 was hauling back to Cowlairs. It all went horribly wrong for them when 37260 failed at Errol, and they were unceremoniously ejected from the train there. A long cold walk ensued for them, all the way to Perth!

Saturday 18/02/95
The 5 Nations Rugby match between Wales and England was taking place in the Principality Stadium at Cardiff, which meant lots of additional workings taking place. Some of the Valley lines were working loco-hauled top-and-tail, including (unusually) loco-hauled services to Penarth.
43139 + 43128 1121 Reading – Cardiff Central
37416 1329 Cardiff Central – Penarth (+47711 on rear)
47711 1347 Penarth – Rhymney (+37416 on rear)
37416 1510 Rhymney – Hengoed (+47711 on rear)
47745 1541 Hengoed – Rhymney (+37141 on rear)
37141 1610 Rhymney – Cardiff Central (+47745 on rear)
37414 1730 Cardiff Central – Severn Tunnel Junction
37425 1827 Severn Tunnel Junction – Birmingham New Street via Chepstow, Camp Hill
37425 2045 Birmingham New Street – Newport via Lickey, Chepstow

Friday 18/02/00

As you'll know, I only have 40s and 87s records from 1984, so there are a few gaps, but this was a good day and my last day ever with multiple 40s. A levels, Interrail and Poly took over after this...(I think, maybe I did do some bashing in summer 84, but if so, I've forgotten!!)

Nowt from me today I'm afraid. Back tomorrow!

EDIT: I've just found a notebook from 1974:

SATURDAY 18th FEBRUARY 1974:

A very profitable spotting day out to Crewe:

7051/7339 Petersfield-Waterloo
86 201 Euston-Crewe
86 224 Crewe-Euston
7821 Waterloo-Woking
7702 Woking-Petersfield

In those days I was quite happy to ramp-up my can haulage/spottage.
