What was the 46 on? They weren't that common at Shrewsbury. I never had any sort of Peak to/from Shrewsbury.
I wish I knew. It was returning from a family holiday in Tenby on 11th August 1979. We had come via the Heart of Wales Line and my class listings have 46056 from Shrewsbury to Crewe followed by 82002 from Crewe to WBQ - that was my only 82 haulage. My spotting book where this was originally recorded is long gone.

Saturday 11th Febuary 1984

I don't know how I was affording all those 87 mileage moves in early 1984. There must have been some sort of ticket promotion similar to the 1986 one.

87008 WBQ to Euston, 1A26 07.34 Carlisle to Euston
87008 Euston to Preston, 1P70 14.40 Euston to Blackpool
40074 Preston to Blackpool North, 1P70 14.40 Euston to Blackpool

That was a nice piece of luck.

Followed by unit/duff and can home.

Thursday 11th February 1988

Off to see my girlfriend...

86229 Wolves to Birmingham NS, 08.50 Glasgow to Poole
47543 Birmingham NS to Oxford, 08.50 Glasgow to Poole

Monday 11th February 1991

I think this might have been a visit to the theatre....what a weird set of moves...

Unit Oxford to Didcot
Tram Didcot to Paddington
EMU Cannon St to London Bridge
EMU London Bridge to Charing Cross
Tram Paddington to Didcot
155334 Didcot to Oxford

Don't know why I recorded the 155.

I recall seeing 46s on the evening Cardiff to Crewe mail and 01.47 return.
Yes, that's a good call. You could get some "exotic" locos on that turn, such as 37s or 50s, so it seems probable that Peaks worked it on occasions.

Our return working (Poole-Newcastle) was 90 minutes late, and turned up behind a pair of Duffs. The train engine 47619 was a total failure, not even supplying ETH. (It could have been switched off)!!

47295+(47619) 15:27 Leamington-Birmingham NS (late running)
We were on the same train. My moves book doesn't mention the fagged Duff, so I have just made a note. Thanks for the gen! I have no recollection of seeing a pair of 47s roll in.

Anyway, my full offering for today...

11th February 1984

A good day for a trip to Carlisle? I think so!

40122 Newcastle - Carlisle 1M04
40122 Carlisle - Newcastle 1S15

11th February 1989

87031 New St - International 1G58
86405 International - Coventry 1A47

Coventry City 1 Newcastle United 2

47295 (+47619 DIT) Coventry - New St 1E35

Plenty of happy Geordies on the way home!

Thursday 11th February 1988 - Day 1 of a 4 day trip, nearly 1500 miles for £12 (+ Sleeper supplement)

Assume I must have pulled a sickie from lectures, as despite being an "arts" student, I must have had something I was supposed to be at on a Thursday pm or Friday! All in a good cause, however:

43191 + ? Bristol TM 14.40 (T) - Reading 15.49 (2E) - 14.40 Bristol TM - Paddington

50031 Reading 16.25 (T) - Paddington 16.59 (1E) - 1F37 16.00 Oxford - Paddington

LT Paddington - Kings Cross - Leicester Square - Embankment; Waterloo - Euston (no idea why the convoluted route!)

86432 Euston 20.55 (T) - Mossend - 1S07 20.55 Euston - Inverness / Fort William

SATURDAY 11th FEBRUARY 1978:

A unique and very enjoyable day out behind Edinburgh Haymarket's pet 40 173 - complete with white windscreen surrounds - which had been sent all the way to the South Coast to work the DAA/D&EG "Whistler" railtour. The tour had started from Victoria and made its way to Portsmouth Harbour via Clapham Junction, Balham, Mitcham Junction, Sutton, Leatherhead, Dorking, Horsham, Barnham and Chichester. My friends and I joined the tour at Portsmouth for a full day out around the Southern Region on a once-in-a-lifetime tour:

7702 Petersfield-Portsmouth Harbour (09 20 from Waterloo)
40 173 Portsmouth Harbour-Eastbourne via Woking, East Putney, Clapham Jn, Longhedge Jn, Factory Jn, Herne Hill, Bickley Jn, Orpington,
Ashford and Hastings.
73 119 Eastbourne-Brighton
40 173 Brighton-Victoria via Quarry non-stop
5329 Victoria-Clapham Junction (20 06 Victoria-Victoria via Wimbledon, Sutton and West Croydon)
5792/5676 Clapham Junction-Wimbledon (20 06 Waterloo-Chessington South)
7747 Wimbledon-Woking (20 22 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour)
7387/7053/7354 Woking-Petersfield (20 50 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour)

The class 40 ran light from Eastbourne to Brighton via Haywards Heath ready to attach to the other end of the railtour for the non-stop run back to London.

Consist: S34925/4913/5024/4911/1766/4916/4902/16200/35012/34941 Load 10 VB/DH)

FRIDAY 11th FEBRUARY 1983:

En route from Glasgow to Holyhead to visit friends in Ireland for the weekend:

86 241 Glasgow Central-Preston (18 23 Glasgow Central-Manchester Victoria/18 18 Edinburgh-Liverpool Lime Street, joining Carstairs)
(Consist: W13473/SC5836/W5871/SC5896/W81230/SC1816 (ex GLC), W14076/W5870/SC5845/5814/5838 ex-EDB.
Combined Load: 11 AB/EH)
86 241 (again!) Preston-Warrington Bank Quay (20 45 Barrow-Euston. Consist: M81599/80375/80424/80512/25738/16132/35464/

55012 1852 Selby – York

Tuesday 12/02/80
Having alighted at York from the 2000 Kings Cross – Aberdeen with 40007, we dropped back onto the 2015 Kings Cross – Edinburgh with 55015. This was 15’ late from York after C&W attention to a defective coach. The train was then further delayed at Darlington where the coach was examined once more, and finally detached from the train. Meanwhile we headed back south once more:
55012 0134 Darlington – York
My mate was very happy as this was his final Deltic for haulage. (I never did clear the class, missing out on 55020, one of the first two withdrawals).
At York there was then a very long fester until the arrival of the 2035 Aberdeen – Kings Cross:
40058 0337 York – Kings Cross
115’->105’ late due to a Freightliner derailment at Berwick upon Tweed.
After breakfast word reached us that my machine, 40069, was on the Bangor circuit, so it had to be done:
86232 1005 Euston – Crewe
47473 1229 Crewe – Chester
40069 1313 Chester – Manchester Victoria
40069 1540 Manchester Victoria – Bangor
40069 1930 Bangor – Manchester Victoria
Cab ride Bangor to Rhyl and Warrington Bank Quay – Manchester Victoria.

86322 1406 Birmingham New Street – Glasgow Central

Wednesday 12/02/86
I had finished a late shift in Glasgow Control and was Rest Day the following day, so I decided to chance my luck with getting a 37 on the Inverness – Aberdeen road again. The first step was the overnight north …
47705 2330 Glasgow Queen Street – Stirling

Sunday 12/02/89
A little engineering diversion:
43190 + 43031 1448 Crewe – Liverpool Lime Street via Earlestown West Curve
87008 1605 Liverpool Lime Street – Milton Keynes Central
317 311 + 317 323 MKC – Rugby via Northampton

Friday 12th February 1988 - Day 2

Having departed from Euston on 1S07 with 86 432 the night before, bound for the West Highland Line, a peep out of the windows at some uncivilized hour reveals we're at... Stirling! Minor panic ensues, tempered quickly by the realization that while finding yourself in the wrong portion in a day coach is just a bit of bad luck, being in the wrong sleeping car requires either a lot of forward planning or a conspiracy - neither of which seemed likely. I believe that this routing was at least in part to avoid a known "bomb alley" on the direct route in from Mossend, although it may have simply been a result of the then combination of Inverness and Fort William portions. Anyway, my records show:
37424 Mossend - Glasgow Queen Street (via Stirling)

Viewed in the cold light of day 34 years later, it seems much more likely that the combined train ran through to Stirling and was split there, thus giving:

unknown Mossend - Stirling
37424 Stirling - Glasgow Queen Street

Anyone able to confirm?

Anyway - next thing I know, it's light(ish) and we're not going anywhere. It's rather cold and ominously silent inside the train, while from the outside come the noises of quite a lot of people obviously on a busy station platform (which is not something the West Highland Line is known for, particularly in mid February). It's Dumbarton Central and the faint but distinctive sounds of English Electric whistling up front suggest something interesting's been going on. Thanks to an informative Sleeper Attendant:

37405 Glasgow Queen Street - somewhere near Dalmuir
20114 + 20146 somewhere near Dalmuir - Dumbarton Central

A third knight in shining armour eventually arrived - able to provide warmth, but unfortunately, one we'd already met.

37424: Dumbarton Central 06.05 (85L) - Fort William 09.40 (86L): 20.55 Euston - Fort William
Plenty of snow from Crianlarich over Rannoch Moor, but none by the time we reached the Fort.
37404: Fort William 10.05 (72L) - Mallaig 11.35 (52L): 2Y51 10.05 Fort William - Mallaig

The delights of Mallaig are best savoured sometime other than a chilly February afternoon, so the loss of nearly an hour was not exactly a tragedy.

37404: Mallaig 15.50 (8L) - Arisaig 16.08 (3L)

Great tales, @The exile

Saturday 12th February 1983

Rather than the usual move to Birmingham or Nuneaton via WCML, looks like I must have done Warrington Central to Leicester via Manchester and Sheffield (units and trams, so no records).

31415 Leicester to Nuneaton, 1M80 09.49 Norwich to Birmingham
31404 Nuneaton to Leicester, 1E66 13.15 Birmingham to Norwich
31423 Leicester to Nuneaton, 1M67 11.33 Norwich to Birmingham
31321 Nuneaton to Leicester, 1E79 15.08 Birmingham to Cambridge
Ooh, what's this?
37038 Leicester to Melton Mowbray, 1E79 15.08 Birmingham to Cambridge
31422 Melton Mowbray to Nuneaton, 1M68 14.14 Norwich to Birmingham
31415 Nuneaton to Leicester, 1E82 18.18 Birmingham to Norwich

A fascinating tale - thanks for sharing.

The splitting and joining of the portions did indeed continue to take place at Mossend, as they were staffed up for the operation, whereas Stirling was not (and the signalling at Stirling might have made joining multiple portions a slow and messy business).
I did the move a few times in late 1988, and recorded it as an 0347 from Mossend via Stirling to Queen Street High Level.
Hope that helps.

Hard luck! 55 020 (as D9020) was my first....and I cleared the class for haulage with 55 021 on the Summer 1981 Edinburgh-Oban special.
20114 + 20146 somewhere near Dalmuir - Dumbarton Central
I wonder whether the two 20s had been purloined from an oil train at the Bowling Esso terminal?
40173 was driven by a Stratford crew who had a refresher on 9 and 10 February 1978, taking 40173 to Kings Lynn and back on the 0836 down for 1125 back.
Thanks....that's very interesting. I didn't know that.

Meanwhile, my contribution for today also involves Dumbarton Central....but I've no recollection of why I had a half-day off work and I wouldn't have done it for the haulage, as it was the same loco that I'd had two days earlier on the 18 21 from Queen Street:

THURSDAY 12th FEBRUARY 1981:

303 064 Hyndland-Glasgow QS LL (08 01 Balloch Central-Hyndland)
37 021 12 53 Glasgow QS HL-Dumbarton Central (continuing to Oban. Consist: SC4244/4182/4052/14055. Load 4 VB/SH)

SATURDAY 12th FEBRUARY 1983:

En route to visit friends in Ireland for the weekend:

47 489 Chester-Holyhead (22 05? from Euston. Consist: M2504/9448/5542/5314/5457/5276/3166/1656/13560/13543/81451 Load 11 AB/EH)
M. V. "St Columba" 03 15 Holyhead-Dun Laoghaire
Bus: Dun Laoghaire-Bray

Sorry, you're correct. It was a Haymarket loco. Age-related brain malfunction! I have edited the OP accordingly.

Ooh, what's this?
37038 Leicester to Melton Mowbray, 1E79 15.08 Birmingham to Cambridge
This was very unusual. Class 37s were rare between Peterborough and Birmingham because Leicester drivers did not know them.

1982/83 was the first winter of ETH on table 18 but the Saturday Cambridge-Birmingham was booked to use the coaches off the Papers from Liverpool Street. For a long period early in 1983 the brake coach in this set was steam heat only, and on 12/02/83 37038 was the only loco with a working boiler available at Cambridge, so it worked to Leicester and back with March drivers. For many weeks after the Cambridge-Birmingham was a steam heat class 31 on Saturday.

Western Requiem Relief Railtour with 1010 throughout:
0906 Reading – Treherbert via Gloucester, Cardiff Central, Ninian Park, Radyr, Pontypridd
1255 Treherbert – Pontypridd
1340 Pontypridd – Merthyr Tydfil
1432 MerthyrTydfil – Pontypridd
1515 Pontypridd – Aberdare
1620 Aberdare – Cardiff Central via Cardiff Queen Street
1820 Cardiff Central – Paddington via Gloucester
The return journey was booked via the Severn Tunnel but was diverted via Gloucester due to signal failures.

Wednesday 13/02/80
After the exploits on The Bangor with 40069 it was time to return to London. A very fine way of doing so presented itself:
83005 0027 Manchester Piccadilly – Stockport
I knew the 83 would be coming off at Stafford (where the train combined with the Liverpool – Euston), but at Stockport a greater temptation presented itself:
40085 0051 Stockport – York via Denton Jn, OA&GB Jn
There it wasn’t too long before the 2035 Aberdeen – Kings Cross arrived – the same train I’d been on 24 hours previously. Sadly, no 40 on it this morning:
47431 0337 York – Kings Cross

Saturday 13/02/82
47707 0352 Mossend – Cowlairs
37039 0425 Cowlairs – Glasgow Queen Street
37011 0600 Glasgow Queen Street – Spean Bridge
It was a magical morning on the West Highland Line. The snow was deep and brilliant white, the air was crisp, the sun was shining, but the temperatures were way below zero. I did the usual double-back move from Spean Bridge:
37108 0924 Spean Bridge – Corrour
All was going well until just approaching Corrour, when the loco started making strange noises, and appeared to lose power. We departed from Corrour, in limp mode, and were soon in dire straits, with the loco barely able to move the train at walking pace. We subsided to a halt, then propelled slowly back into Corrour station and requested assistance:
27111 1017 Corrour – Garelochhead 84’ late, and somewhat chilly.
The 27 dumped 37108* in the loop at Corrour to await collection. I alighted at Garelochhead to cover the 1254 Queen Street – Oban, but realised that because of late running the trains would cross at Glen Douglas (where there was only a crossing point, not a station). So I held on at Garelochhead to warm up, and dropped back onto the following Oban – Queen Street service (with a 37 I’d already had earlier that morning):
37039 1436 Garelochhead – Glasgow Queen Street
47546 1550 Glasgow Central – Carlisle via Dumfries
87003 1851 Carlisle – Euston

*37108 was later renumbered to 37325 and spent time on the Hunterston – Ravenscraig ore services, and survives to this day at Crewe Heritage Centre undergoing restoration. Maybe it will reappear on the main line one day …

Thursday 13/02/86
47483 0011 Stirling – Inverness
Hooray, there’s a 37 on the 0555 Inverness – Aberdeen:
37178 0555 Inverness – Aberdeen
37178 0940 Aberdeen – Inverness
I really enjoyed having a 37 on this route, as it offered a bit more in the way of acceleration and high speed running than the normal class 37 routes in Scotland, especially as they were essentially on class 47 timings. Back at Inverness I was all set to head south on the 1430 Inverness – Edinburgh with a 47, but there was another treat waiting me. The next leg of 37178’s diagram was another round trip to Aberdeen, but the boiler had failed … so they turned out 37261 to replace it!
37261 1432 Inverness – Aberdeen
37261 1740 Aberdeen – Inverness
Now I really must head south again:
47454 2030 Inverness – Mossend

Saturday 13/02/88
37426 0620 Crewe – Cardiff
37426 1045 Cardiff – Crewe

Saturday 13th February 1988 - Day 3 of 4

After yesterday's unexpected bonuses - and despite the date, very much a "business as usual" start to the return leg. Seemed rather run-of-the-mill at the time - but what wouldn't we give to have even this mundanity on offer today?!

Whiling away the morning at Arisaig in February must have taxed the imagination quite a bit (I can remember being given a lift to the station in the B&B owner's clapped out car - it can't have been because we were in a hurry, so maybe it just seemed rude to refuse), but at least it's one more minor West Highland "shack" I don't have to tick off 34 years later. (All very careful advance planning, you understand!)

37401 Arisaig 12.38 (1L) - Fort William 13.50 (4E): 2Y54 12.20 Mallaig to Fort William

Having been the cause of our unexpected Choppers the day before, 37405 was obviously feeling better again, because

37405 Fort William 14.15 (T) - Glasgow Queen Street 18.00 (15L): 1T34, 14.15 Fort William to Glasgow QS

47709 Glasgow QS 18.30 (T) - Edinburgh Waverley 19.18 (2E): 1O50, 18.30 Glasgow QS - Edinburgh Waverley

Time for a quick overnight visit home before seeing what the ECML has to offer the next day.

Nothing from me today, I'm afraid. More tomorrow.

Change of plan....I've just found my 1983 notebook!

MONDAY 14th FEBRUARY 1983:

Returning from a long weekend visiting friends in Ireland (I have edited my posts for 11/12 February 1983 to put this trip in context):

221 Bray-Dublin Connolly (06 50 Greystones-Howth)
111 11 00 Dublin Connolly-Belfast Central (which was heavily delayed by engineering works and single line working, having arrived late in Dublin....causing me to just miss the connection from York Road to Larne and spend £14 on a taxi all the way!)
M.V, "St David" (standing in for "Galloway Princess", which was undergoing her annual overhaul): Larne-Stranraer
27 034 18 35 Stranraer Harbour-Glasgow Central (Consist: E25144/SC26101/M81576/E25100/E4882 Load 5 VB/SH)
