In between the travelling I visited a couple of branches of Spoons. Walsall and Cradley Heath, to be precise.

Hold on. You went to a Wetherspoons in Cradley Heath, when one of the best pubs in the world is just up the road? (Bull & Bladder, aka The Vine).

Guilty as charged! In mitigation, I have visited plenty of good pubs in the Black Country. I cleared the Holdens fleet for "pintage".

I did keep a record of all the pubs I had visited, but I lost my notes some years ago.

it was my ambition to clear all Batham’s pubs in a day (a well known marathon), but age got hold of me.

40058 0051 Stockport – York via OA&GB Jn
On arrival back at York, my pet Deltic soon arrived heading south. How could I possibly refuse?
55019 0254 York – Grantham
I alighted at Grantham to cover the 0405 Kings Cross – Leeds. Surprisingly this produced a Deltic too, which was especially lively as the train was only load 3!
55018 0629 Grantham – Leeds
There had been a derailment overnight in Leeds Parcels Concentration Depot, so the vans which should have gone overnight to Glasgow were instead being attached to the 0715 Nottingham – Glasgow – and that had a 40 on it!
40068 0915 Leeds – Annan
With a full load 12, 40068 was utterly thrashed over the S&C, and still managed to lose 20 minutes. Departing from Carlisle it became obvious all was not well, as the power was fluctuating on and off. At Annan the 40 was declared a failure with a burnt out load regulator, so we sat and waited for assistance. (There were plenty of 40s sitting on Kingmoor, I wonder which one it will be …)
47349 1207 Annan – Glasgow Central, 110’ late.
Cheers. Sub-zero temperatures, deep snow, and the best they can send us is an NB 47.
Across to Queen Street for a Push Pull to Edinburgh:
27103 + 27205 1650 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh
Time to head south again:
45002 2040 Edinburgh – Newcastle
The boiler failed on this as well, so it was removed at Newcastle and replaced by:
31225 + 31198 2318 Newcastle – York (to be continued …)

Tuesday 03/02/81
I had been attending a training school for new booking office clerks. Naturally we learnt all about ticketing and accountancy, but also such useful information as how to read a timetable. (Funny enough, I was quite good at that already, having been planning week-long Rover tickets for many years). We also had site visits, such as to Bounds Green to see an HST under maintenance. One day we were given the task of planning and preparing a round trip, then another day actually doing it and writing it up from the viewpoint of a passenger. The trip I was supposed to do was from Kings Cross to Cleethorpes and return. I “improved” the official itinerary somewhat. I hoped for a Deltic to Cleethorpes. I had seen them on Kings Cross - Cleethorpes services on several occasions but never managed to have one myself. (I still haven’t). I turned up at Kings Cross to do the 0815 to Cleethorpes, and instead of the hoped-for Deltic on air cons, I was greeted by 47163 on a rake of Mk 1s. Still, never mind, at least I can start off in style:
55015 0805 Kings Cross – Newark Northgate
There I alighted for my “booked” service:
47163 1000 Newark Northgate – Cleethorpes via Lincoln St Marks
That’s where I started going seriously off-piste. I was supposed to wait around at Cleethorpes, examining the passenger infrastructure, and then catch the through train back to Kings Cross (with 47163 again). What I actually did was:
DMU Cleethorpes – New Holland Pier
MV Farringford (1948 vintage paddle steamer ferry) New Holland Pier – Hull
http://www.clydeships.co.uk/view.php?ref=15730
http://www.davesrailpics.bravehost.com/newholland/newholland.htm

DMU Hull – Sheffield
47116 1623 Sheffield – Peterborough via Nottingham, Grantham
This was the 1515 Manchester Piccadilly – Harwich Parkeston Quay. We had been reminded in our lesson on reading timetables to pay special attention to the unusual Cross Country links which were available, so I did just that.
Now at Peterborough I could have just headed on the next available train to Kings Cross, but 55012 arrived on the 1805 Kings Cross – York, so I decided to double back to Grantham, in the hope of something decent back from there:
55012 1906 Peterborough – Grantham
55017 1936 Grantham – Kings Cross
I wrote up a full and honest account of my trip as part of my training log. When the course tutor came to read it, I could see his mind was just about blown. Everybody else on the course had done a straight out-and-back trip and was home in time for tea, whereas I was leaping around the country raking in three different Deltics and even venturing onto a vintage paddle steamer. Apparently he had turned up at Kings Cross to see us off, and wondered why I wasn’t on my scheduled train direct to Cleethorpes. I explained that I turned up early, saw it was formed of Mk 1 coaches, so decided to sample the air conditioned Mk 2 comfort of the preceding train as far as Newark to enable me establish a baseline for a fair comparison! The opening of the Humber Bridge a few months later swiftly put paid to the New Holland Pier branch, and also the ferry service, so this was the last time I sampled it. Happy days!

Sunday 03/02/85
After a night in the Invershin Hotel, it was kippers for breakfast, then we strolled up to the request stop to flag down the return of the Lairg papers:
37260 1106 Invershin – Inverness
After lunch in Inverness and a leisurely stroll around, time to head south:
47214 1700 Inverness – Edinburgh via Ladybank
27063 1700 Inverness – Perth, pilot.
The afternoon / early evening workings from Inverness quite often produced a pilot loco of some description, simply because of imbalanced workings.
47707 2130 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street

Friday 03/02/89
Returning from my parents’ house in Plymouth to Crewe, along with wife + 2 young children (so no scope for variation):
47665 1155 Plymouth – Birmingham New Street
86228 1604 Birmingham New Street – Stafford
86426 1639 Stafford – Crewe

Saturday 03/02/96
60009 “Union of South Africa” 1002 Worcester Shrub Hill – Nottingham via Kidderminster, Soho, Bescot, Sutton Park, Leicester
60009 1530 Nottingham – Crewe via Trent, Sheet Stores, Stenson, Stoke on Trent
87030 2023 Crewe – Euston
43136 + 43009 2130 Paddington – Reading

It is up a bloody big hill to be fair

I used to live just down from the Delph Run. Doing it in “reverse”
- ie. up the hill - meant you could forego that horrible Corn Exchange and settle in The Vine for the rest of the evening to cleanse oneself of the horrors that came before...

I had returned to York from Edinburgh, having had an eventful day, and there was every intention of going home for a good night’s sleep, until 40008 put in an appearance on the 2100 Kings Cross – Edinburgh …
40008 0136 York – Edinburgh via Boroughbridge Road, Stockton, Scotswood, Carlisle
The Borderlands curse of the 40 struck again. Just as 24 hours previously when 40068 had ground to a halt just north of the Scottish border, so this time 40008 decided to do much the same. We came to a silent halt just north of Lockerbie. The traincrew diagnosed that the coolant system had boiled dry. The driver clambered up into the front coach carrying his mash can, and filled it with water from the sink in the WC. A couple of trips like that was enough to fill the header tank sufficiently to get us going again. Crisis averted. 40’ late.
At Edinburgh we hoped for some class 40 activity, and were not disappointed:
40162 0900 Edinburgh – Haymarket
Walk back to Waverley station
40064 1100 Edinburgh – Dundee
After that, it all fell to bits somewhat:
47429 1208 Dundee – Edinburgh
This was the 1030 Aberdeen – Kings Cross, which I hoped might re-engine to a Deltic from Edinburgh. We sat there for a very long time, awaiting a forward loco, then …
47459 1410 Edinburgh – York via Carlisle, Scotswood. 50’ -> 40’ late.

Monday 04/02/80
40067 2000 Kings Cross – York, 10’ late, station overtime.

Tuesday 04/02/86
Returning home from visiting my parents, I struck lucky with the motive power for once:
50019 0944 Plymouth – Birmingham New Street
87031 1406 Birmingham New Street – Glasgow Central
Load 13 over the Devon banks, with a class 50 on the front. Aah, memories.

Thursday 04/02/88
As part of the training for my new job as Speedlink Performance Assistant at Crewe, I had arranged to spend the night shift shadowing the Assistant Yard Master in Willesden Brent Yard, to learn how they dealt with the incoming Speedlink trips and formed them up into trunk Speedlink long distances services, and vice versa.

Tomorrow two years ago (as I know I'll be very busy tomorrow) I took 10p tickets from:
Manchester Victoria to Leeds
Leeds to Nottingham
Nottingham to Leeds
Leeds to Manchester Victoria
Absolutely no clue of train numbers but I remember it was 195 on the Manchester to Leeds and return, 158 Leeds to Nottingham and 150 Nottingham to Leeds which was fun (and cosy, since Northern naturally couldn't be bothered to put 4-car on!)

A different way of getting from York to London, because of ticketing availability:
47194 1521 York – Sheffield
45145 1710 Sheffield – St Pancras via Derby
The 45 lost 23 minutes to St Pancras, all of it down to the loco.

Friday 05/02/82
87024 0940 Euston – Watford Junction
87005 1023 Watford Junction – Euston
50032 1250 Paddington – Oxford
This Worcester Shrub Hill train started off 5’ late due to ETH problems, and then came to a grinding halt in Moreton Cutting due to brake issues. We arrived at Oxford 30’ late, where 50041 replaced 50032.
47543 1418 Oxford – Leamington Spa 14’ late due to 50032 failing ahead.
50026 1519 Leamington Spa – Oxford
50032 1630 Oxford – Paddington
This was the train which 50041 should have worked. 50032 was fine on vac stock.
50009 1752 Paddington – Westbury
I had a chat with the guard on this, and was invited to join him for the ECS run to Malago Vale …
50009 2010 Westbury – Bristol Bath Road
I alighted from the ECS as we passed by Bath Road depot, and heaved myself up onto the platform at Temple Meads!
45115 2125 Bristol Temple Meads – Birmingham New Street
No sleepers were being conveyed because of the ongoing strike action, so there was no need for bank locos at Bromsgrove, sadly.
86236 2330 Birmingham New Street – Crewe
Quite a varied and eventful day.

Friday 05/02/88
After a night spent in Willesden Brent Yard observing the comings and goings of Speedlink services, it was time to head home:
EMU Stonebridge Park – Euston
87019 0650 Euston – Crewe

Sunday 05/02/95
6024 0919 Reading – Paignton via Bath Spa, Bristol Temple Meads
47501 1714 Paignton – Bristol Temple Meads
A one-way steam tour with a King. I baled out at Bristol on the way back, as the pleasure of travelling behind 47501 was too much for me (or something like that):
43152 + 43188 1930 Bristol Temple Meads – Reading via Bath Spa

Thursday 05/02/98
I’d completed my usual commute on HSTs to / from Paddington and was on my way home when I spotted the 1647 Reading – Liverpool about to depart with a 31/4 on the front. Well, it would be rude not to …
31466 1647 Reading – Didcot
43129 + 43018 1720 Didcot – Reading
Of course, 31466 has since been preserved by the Dean Forest Diesel Association, and has made guest appearances at several preserved lines.

Returning from a weekend in Folkestone and my first trip to France the previous day

1511 / 15xx (Was 7106) / 90xx / 90xx Folkestone Harbour – Victoria (Non Stop except for reversing at Folkestone sidings)

90013 Euston - Lancaster

150xxx Lancaster - Barrow In Furness

This was the only time I used Folkestone Harbour station

I never recorded unit numbers back then so only know 1511 from a photo taken prior to departure. Taken in black and white as part of a 6th form photo course project

PICT0007.JPG

I have unit number 7106 for the second set, I have a photo with a coach number and the only set reference I can find is this one not its new 15xx one in the books I still have. If anyone can help with its new number or the MLV’s (massive long shot) on this service that is much appreciated

You might want to look here (it's too long to quote): https://www.bloodandcustard.com/BR-4BEP-4CEP.html

Depending which vehicle you have noted, it's 75% chance of 1561 or 25% 1562.

Once again there is a 40 on an overnight out of Kings Cross. Sadly I have to be at work in the morning, so I can only take it to Peterborough:
40167 2000 Kings Cross – Peterborough
Despite being load 11 (including sleepers), the 40 managed to achieve 94 mph through Hitchin.
At Peterborough I saw the Royal Train whilst waiting for my return journey south:
55021 2152 Peterborough – Kings Cross
This was 2’ late ex Peterborough, and 7’ early into Kings Cross, allowing the crew to make an unscheduled connection into an earlier train to Finsbury Park to book off early. Reached 107 mph on the descent from Potters Bar.

Saturday 06/02/82
I had arrived at Crewe, and was heading for Plymouth to visit my parents. Here goes:
81014 0330 Crewe – Euston (Wedged, but I wasn’t about to turn down an 81)
50035 1310 Waterloo – Exeter St Davids
43130 + 43129 1648 Exeter St Davids – Plymouth

Friday 06/02/87
Self, wife and 7-month old son in a sleeper, en route to visit my parents in Plymouth:
86233 2350 Glasgow Central – Birmingham New Street
(Sat 07/02/87)
45126 0700 Birmingham New Street – Bristol Temple Meads
43015 + 43006 0910 Bristol Temple Meads – Plymouth

Wednesday 06/02/91
Another work trip to Harwich:
47596 0721 Reading – Paddington
86215 0935 Liverpool Street – Harwich Parkeston Quay
Then later that day:
312 702 Harwich Parkeston Quay – Colchester
309 607 + 309 602 Colchester – Liverpool Street
47819 1750 Paddington – Reading

Today two years ago, I took a train from Manchester to Leeds, then Leeds to Hull, then the reverse. Again, don't recall train numbers or even types though I suspect it was a 195 on the Manchester to Leeds and return.

Presumably I couldn't be bothered festering for something loco-hauled and took an EMU back to Brum.

Why was an 0330 service wedged?
It was the 2150 from Glasgow Central via Dumfries. Being a Friday night / Saturday morning there were always more people travelling. There may have been a sporting event involved too?

Meanwhile, here are today's offerings:
Wednesday 07/02/79
40115 1126 York – Leeds
47534 1205 Leeds – York

Saturday 07/02/81
40058 2000 Kings Cross – Newcastle via Selby
Lost 20 minutes to Newcastle, hardly surprising on load 15. Loco came off at Newcastle.
(Sunday 08/02/81)
The 2005 Aberdeen – Kings Cross Sleepers Only had been conveying a BSK right behind the locomotive in recent weeks, so when it turned up with 55009 on the front, I quickly let myself in and settled down for the night:
55009 01xx Newcastle – Kings Cross via Stockton, Selby, Joint Lines

Sunday 07/02/93
A day on the Mid Hants:
70000 1208 Alresford – Alton
76017 12xx Ropley – Alton, attached as a pilot to 70000.
76017 + 70000 1305 Alton – Alresford
30053 + 30506 1435 Alresford – Alton
30506+ 30053 1545 Alton – Medstead & Four Marks
205 029 16xx Medstead & Four Marks – Alton
205 029 17xx Alton – Alresford
