31407 St Helens J to Liverpool LS

I was just getting into bashing as opposed to spotting, but this is all I have for this day. Probably a unit or duff involved too. I wonder if I'd been looking for Deltics which were doing some transpennine runs at this time.

Saturday 18th December 1982

I wasn't on the Christmas Cracker, but was enjoying some smaller English Electric thrash...

85017 Warrington BQ to Birmingham NS - Nice start, then Goyle-tastic!

31255 BNS to Leicester
31416 Leicester to Nuneaton
31406 Nuneaton to Leicester
31423 Leicester to Nuneaton
31239 Nuneaton to Leicester
31414 Leicester to Nuneaton
31416 Nuneaton to Leicester
31255 Leicester to BNS

And presumably a Can or two home...

I also recall that in the mid 80s container trains from Gushetfaulds (Glasgow freightliner terminal) were routinely being "stopped" in the Cambuslang area and emptied of their contents. I believe that illegally acquired track circuit operating clips to hold signals at danger were used. I was told this by someone I knew who worked in Glasgow control at the time.

I believe the raiding of trains at this location (the Caledonian Circuit, a notorious housing scheme) started when Up Freightliners were stopped by signal there, leading to an instruction that these trains had to be given a clear road through the area. More recently, Up freights have been raided when stopped at Wishaw Central Jc coming from Holytown (in another notorious area, Craigneuk), with the thieves using sharp knives to slash curtain-sided vehicles. But to get back on track.....

Sunday 18th December 1983
50023 1548 Paddington-Manchester; No, the loco failed at Reading ! (the second time in 12 days my commute home was delayed by a failure). Luckily the next train was not far behind;
50013 1610 Paddington-Hereford (Reading-Oxford)

The loco had run through the trap points and embedded one bogie deep in the dirt. Initial efforts to rerail by jacking and packing failed, so in the end they had to get a crane in to lift it. The above photo shows that process near the end. You can see how deeply it was embedded by the amount of ballast disturbed by the derailed bogie.
37096 at Newport Godfrey Street 17/12/88
I think it came off at the catch points. When I got there they were jacking the 37 up OR maybe it was a crane. Maybe I turned up at the end of the lift. They then slid the 37 sideways on big steal beams that had horizontal pistons (pushing the jacks sideways iirc). These looked purpose built for that kind of job. The 37 was then jacked up again, beams removed and then lowered onto steel plates between its wheels and the rails. Engine started and then slowly moved along the track to fall onto the rails properly. I very much remember that last bit - rather violent. Certainly there was no crane lowering the 37 back onto its rightful rails so maybe it was a different time.

FRIDAY 18th DECEMBER 1981:

I had the day off work and started a quick pre-Christmas trip to visit friends in Surrey and Hampshire and then my grandmother on Teesside. The slightly convoluted journey to London was to get behind three different electric locos which I required for haulage:

08 30 Balloch Central-Springburn: 303 044 Hyndland-Glasgow QS LL
10 45 Glasgow Central-Manchester Victoria: 86 234 Glasgow C-Carlisle (Consist: M80867/9453/3395/1838/5931/5988/6037/13546/9441/81580*)
11 15 Glasgow Central-Birmingham New St: 87 031 Carlisle-Crewe (Consist: M9541/13478/3433/1738/6159/6115/6063/81392/9505/14156/6150*)
12 05 Glasgow Central-Euston: 86 235 Crewe-Euston (Consist: M9443/13533/3328/5953/6039/1555/3360/3282/80864/1727)
20 12 Waterloo-Basingstoke/Alton: 7742/7720

(* - in each case the last five vehicles formed the Edinburgh portion, attached at Carstairs).

Apart from 87 101, 87 031 was my last of the class required for haulage.

WEDNESDAY 18th DECEMBER 1996:

By this time I was a driver at Skipton and working almost exclusively on DMUs and EMUs. However, we still had freight work for nearly another two years after this but, due to its impending loss on privatisation, there was no further recruitment of trainmen (G), resulting in a severe shortage. As a result, Skipton drivers were being offered rest days covering those jobs. On this day, I was lucky to have a 60 to Kirkby Thore and back - over the S & C - on one of the containerised gypsum workings from Drax power station, relieving and relieved by different sets of Knottingley men at Skipton:

60 027 Skipton-Kirkby Thore
60 027 Kirkby Thore-Skipton

One of the bonuses on this job was that, while the containers were being unloaded, we were allowed to use the British Gypsum staff canteen at Kirkby Thore, where an excellent lunch could be had for next to no money at all. Another bonus was that I was allowed to have an illicit drive most of the way back with the empties!

47458 1247 York – Leeds
After doing some chores in Leeds, I returned to the station to see what was about. 40080 rolled in on the 1547 York – Liverpool, but was immediately hooked off as it was No Heat. 47540 replaced it. Not what I wanted to see.
47540 1621 Leeds – Manchester Victoria, 12’ late ex Leeds, on time into Manchester Victoria!
40025 1710 Manchester Victoria – Preston
47471 1817 Preston – Manchester Victoria
47540 1950 Manchester Victoria – York
As noted previously, the 2150 York – Shrewsbury was running in two portions because of the pre-Christmas postal traffic, so I hung around hoping a 40 might produce on one or other portion. Departure time came and went, and there was still no loco on the 2150 to Shrewsbury, Then the Newcastle – Bristol overnight (a solid Peak working) rolled in behind 40081! That was quickly hooked off and replaced by 46004 (so no immediate prospect of a 40 to Bristol for me), but 40081 then immediately attached to the Shrewsbury.
40081 2150 York – Stockport via OA&GB Jn. 31’ late ex York, on time into Stockport (as there was no need to faff around detaching the Manchester portion).
(Incidentally, the 2150 York – Shrewsbury was timed at a maximum speed of 75 mph, so that once per week - on a Thursday IIRC - it could convey a 4-wheel van full of dirty laundry from the York Station Hotel to the British Transport Hotels’ laundry in Manchester. That undoubtedly helped with the time recovery too on days (like today) when no such van was being conveyed. I think this changed in 1983, when the van was no longer scheduled to be conveyed and the departure time from York was amended to 2234. This probably coincided with the sell-off of the British Transport Hotels to the private sector. By then the route from Stalybridge to Stockport via Guide Bridge had also been cleared for loco-hauled trains, so the “Bangor Mails” was diverted that way, allowing eventual closure of the OA&GB Junction line and associated signal boxes. Do I win the prize for the most esoteric / useless piece of arcane timetable information, i.e. knowing a train whose timing load was determined by a weekly van load of dirty laundry?).
(Thursday 20/12/81)
40081 0051 Stockport – York via Denton Jn, OA&GB Jn.

Friday 19/12/80
40074 1612 Kings Cross – Peterborough
As part of the Christmas amended programme, the 1410 York – Kings Cross was starting back from Edinburgh at 1050. It should have departed Peterborough long since, but it was still on the departures board … and here it comes with a 40!
40067 was the loco in question, but it had run out of boiler water. The only place to take water at Peterborough was on the stabling point, there being no hose on the platform, so 40067 was hooked off, and replaced by (boilered) 37075. Oh, that’ll do nicely.
37075 1605 Peterborough – Kings Cross 120’ late.

Friday 19/12/86
Taking my wife and 5-month old son to the in-laws for Christmas, we booked a sleeper on the Glasgow – Bristol overnight, and I struck lucky with a Roarer:
81006 2350 Glasgow Central – Birmingham New Street

Wednesday 19/12/90
A day off from work for a little cranking:
47840 0911 Reading – Basingstoke
50028 1002 Basingstoke – Salisbury
50037 1118 Salisbury – Woking
50017 1240 Woking – Andover
33116 1340 Andover – Waterloo
91024 1710 Kings Cross – Grantham
91021 1817 Grantham – Kings Cross
47596 2020 Paddington – Reading

Thursday 19/12/91
Returning from the pre-Christmas team-building “event” in Liverpool:
90007 1110 Liverpool Lime Street – Euston
The DVT on this set wasn’t speaking to the loco. The inward working arrived behind 90009, and 90007 dropped onto the other end to work back to Euston, with 90009 still attached on rear (but not powering).

Thursday 19/12/00
Returning from Doncaster, once again I chose a train worked by one of the North of London Eurostar sets:
E* 3310 + 3309 1503 Doncaster – Kings Cross

47619 (formerly 264) 0734 Poole-Glasgow C (Oxford-Birmingham New St)
85037 same train (Birmingham New St-Glasgow C)
47453 1712 Glasgow C-Ayr (to Johnstone) - IIRC this train was formed of the Nightrider stock, giving Ayrshire commuters a bit of luxury.

I would have to say yes, 100%. Not sure what the prize would be though, an item of dirty laundry perhaps !!

This forum is full of little gems like that. I never cease to be amazed by the things I discover here. For example the St Helens sidings thread in the Infrastructure & Stations subforum, in particular Lloyds Sidings' post.

G’day hope it’s ok to join the post, it certainly took a few days to read all the previous ones!

15/12/78 would of been a Cardiff to Newcastle train with a return on the 19/12/78 probably on 1V88 To/from York as this lucky 13 year old trainspotter got tasked with collecting the grandparents and accompanying them on the journey. My notes do not show a copped loco so can only assume it was a 46 previous had.

SUNDAY 19th DECEMBER 1976:

Returning South after a quick pre-Christmas weekend visit to my grandparents on Teesside:

14 42 Newcastle-Poole: 46 030 Darlington-York
13 40 Newcastle-Kings Cross via Sunderland: 47 428 York-Kings Cross via Milford, Normanton, Calder Bridge Jn. and Hare Park
20 50 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour: 7821/7054/7342 Waterloo-Petersfield

I could have walked into Stockton to pick up the 13 40 ex-Newcastle, but one of my grandparents' neighbours was driving to Darlington and offered me a lift - which was fortunate, as I needed 46 030 for haulage.

SATURDAY 19th DECEMBER 1981:

Another pre-Christmas visit to my grandmother on Teesside - who by this time was on her own. Having travelled from Scotland the previous day and spent the Saturday night with friends near Woking, I nipped down to Petersfield for a quick pub lunch with friends there and then back up to London in time to catch the un-named Saturday equivalent of the Cleveland Executive:

10 18 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour: 7851/7426 Woking-Petersfield
14 12 Portsmouth Harbour-Waterloo: 7846/7708 Petersfield-Waterloo
16 40 Kings Cross-Middlesbrough: 43 107 + E44074/42231/42232/42233/42234/40318/41114/41113 + 43 091 Kings Cross-Eaglescliffe

The day after my interview at Aston, I had another interview to attend - this time at Leeds Uni. I had to cover my own costs this time, and this was compounded by the university charging us 50p for a buffet lunch!

47515 Newcastle - York 1V85
47422 York - Leeds 1M67
47529 Leeds - York 1E53
47543 York - Darlington 1E91

We’re going on a Deltic Hunt …
47471 1413 York – Selby
47536 1500 Selby – York
Oh well …

Saturday 20/12/80
A pre-Christmas additional …
40074 1635 Kings Cross – Newcastle via Selby
At Newcastle I decided to double straight back to York to cover the 2100 Kings Cross – Edinburgh, which I believed was a good bet for another class 40.
46056 2315 Newcastle – York
Sometimes you just get it completely wrong. The 2100 Kings Cross – Edinburgh (which I’d come to York to cover) was 46046 instead of the anticipated class 40, so I turned that down and bought another cup of tea, and festered some more whilst perfecting my skills on the Galaxian machine. By contrast, the 1935 Aberdeen – Kings Cross (which I could have waited for at Newcastle) was 55003 only as far as York, on its very last journey before withdrawal. I watched in dismay as they uncoupled 55003 at York and replaced it with 47403. Not my idea of fun.
Incidentally, the 2045 Edinburgh – Kings Cross was load 14 when I joined it at Newcastle, and it was scheduled to attach a Leeds portion at Doncaster, so I wonder what size it was arriving at Kings Cross?

Sunday 20/12/81
55017 1405 Kings Cross – York
This was planned to be my personal farewell to the Deltics, as I would be out of the country for the actual last day. 55017 should have worked back to Kings Cross on the 1913 from York, but for some unknown reason the stock was swapped for some steam heat Mk 1s, and 55017’s train heat boiler was U/S, so the rather unlovely 47517 produced instead. I remember the feeling of intense disappointment as 47517 appeared from the snowy darkness, around the curve into York station. Farewell to the Deltics indeed, just not quite in the way I had planned it!
47517 1913 York – Newark Northgate
This was 30' late start waiting connections, and was further delayed at Doncaster. We stood at Retford for 45 minutes due to frozen points. Then the 18.5 miles to Newark took over an hour (booked 15 mins) as the wretched Duff kept expiring and restarting. At Newark it collapsed entirely, and refused to restart, so we sat and awaited rescue, getting increasingly cold amidst the constant falling snow.
You might think that Doncaster would send us some mighty NB freight loco to work forward. What we got instead was a No Heat wagon all the way from Peterborough:
46052 2024 Newark Northgate – Kings Cross
240’ -> 270’ late.
So my Deltic Farewell – planned as a round trip to York, and home before the pubs shut - was concluded with a marathon journey in sub-zero temperatures featuring a failed Duff, an NB Wagon, and an arrival at Kings Cross in the middle of the night.
That didn’t quite go to plan!

Saturday 20/12/86
I was taking my wife and 5-month old son to the in-laws for them to celebrate Christmas together, whilst I headed off towards Poland in search of steam locos. We had done the overnight sleeper from Glasgow Central …
47466 0700 Birmingham New Street – Bristol Parkway
43128 + 43127 0916 Bristol Parkway – Newport
47655 0951 Newport – Abergavenny
This was a Cardiff – Hereford working, which I had expected would be a DMU, so this was a step up. Having deposited wife and son with the in-laws, I did a quick U-turn and headed for Harwich via the “scenic” route:
47655 1126 Abergavenny – Newport
45106 1225 Newport – Bristol Temple Meads
33019 1305 Bristol Temple Meads – Southampton
EMU 2010 + 8025 + 8017 1608 Southampton – Waterloo
86233 1830 Liverpool Street – Manningtree
I broke my journey at Manningtree to visit the station buffet – a splendid place.
“Clacton” EMU 617 + 604 + 609 2025 Manningtree to Harwich Parkeston Quay.
… and onto the night ship to Hoek van Holland.

Thursday 20/12/90
Another little 50 bash on the Southern:
47841 1407 Reading – Basingstoke
50001 1503 Basingstoke – Waterloo

The joys of now long gone the all night buffet, York being just one of many stations with this with this service!
I'm glad I didn't attempt to keep track of the number of hours I spent in all-night buffets back then. It would be a large and very sad number

SATURDAY 20th DECEMBER 1980:

A day visit to my parents near Garelochhead:

07 22 Airdrie-Helensburgh Central: 303 046 Hyndland-Dumbarton Central via Yoker
08 05 Glasgow Queen St-Oban: 37 112 Dumbarton Central-Garelochhead (Consist: SC4159/4110/4201/14083 Load 4 VB/SH)
17 55 Oban-Glasgow Queen St: 27 034 Helensburgh Upper-Dumbarton Central (Consist: SC14000/3917/4223/4138/16143/4126/W80718 Load 7 VB/SH)
20 55 Dumbarton Central-Motherwell: 303 017 Dumbarton Central-Hyndland via Singer

Class 27s were giving way to 37s on WHL passenger services by this time. I rode in CK no. SC16143, which was ex-works with a strong smell of new paint!

I'd stopped going out bashing by now, but was still recording journeys. This was first part of going home via the not quite yet in-laws. It included some new line for me, but also some very familiar track, alas no longer with the Goyles.

50050 Oxford to Coventry (Paddington to BNS service)
150132 Coventry to Leicester (12.25 Coventry to Nottingham service).

This was the first time I'd done the Coventry to Nuneaton section, only reopened in 1987.

40112 1740 Manchester Victoria – Holyhead
As a part of the pre-Christmas loco diagram alterations, the 0053 (Saturday) Holyhead – Euston was booked to be a pair of class 40s from Holyhead to Crewe. Pairs of 40s were not at all common, so I made the long trip to Holyhead to see if it produced. The fact that the train heat boiler conked out around Frodsham made for an increasingly chilly journey …

Sunday 21/12/80
A long trip to the frozen north …
55013 0306 York – Edinburgh via Leamside, King Edward Bridge, Blyth & Tyne
At Edinburgh we dropped lucky with 40070 allocated onto the 0900 Edinburgh – Inverness via Aberdeen. There was a prolonged fester at Aberdeen, awaiting the arrival of the portion from Glasgow Queen Street. The second man had hooked 40070 off and the driver was about to take it light engine to Ferryhill when he was met by a very persuasive deputation of class 40 bashers who enlightened him that he was in error, and that this loco was definitely working through to Inverness (and so he’d have to wait for the Glasgow portion to arrive and take that 47 to Ferryhill instead)! They hooked the 40 back on – and I’m very glad they did, as this was the only occasion on which I had a 40 on the Aberdeen – Inverness line.
40070 0900 Edinburgh – Inverness via Aberdeen
We took a stroll down to the depot at Inverness, and learned that 40070 would be returning south on the overnight to Glasgow / Edinburgh via the Highland Main Line. My mates hung around for that. Sadly, I had to get back to work, so I couldn’t wait around for 40070. However I knew that the 1925 Aberdeen – Kings Cross would be a sensible train to cover, as it was booked a 40 from Aberdeen to Edinburgh, and Sundays Only it was also booked to re-engine to another class 40 forward from Edinburgh. So let’s see how that went:
47273 1625 Inverness – Aberdeen
47419 1925 Aberdeen – Edinburgh
46056 2250 Edinburgh – Kings Cross
The “Ultimate Wagon.” Sulzer power all the way from Inverness to Kings Cross. Oh well, at least I was at work on time. Thank you, and good night.

Monday 21/12/81
En route to visit my parents in Plymouth:
33012 0650 Waterloo – Exeter St Davids
30’ late start awaiting pilotman due to signal failures.
45033 1122 Exeter St Davids – Plymouth
My first 45/0 haulage of 1981!

Friday 21/12/84
I’m off to Poland for a steamy winter bash. I worked early shift, then straight onto the 1410 Glasgow Central – Euston relief, which I knew was booked for a class 81 – 85:
86206 1410 Glasgow Central – Euston (funny looking Roarer)
68005 (MLV) + 1592 + 1528 + 1529 2045 Victoria – Folkestone Harbour
MV Horsa 2245 Folkestone Harbour – Oostende

Wednesday 21/12/88
90013 0452 Crewe – Euston
At Paddington, the 0815 to Oxford was a pair of 50s, accompanied by a technical rider, as both locos were off long-term repairs at Old Oak Common, and this was their test run:
50024 + 50039 0815 Paddington – Slough
Meanwhile, 50031 had been used on Speedlink work at Oxford, and was needed at Paddington for pre-Christmas additionals, so it was paired up with 50046 on the 0658 Banbury – Paddington:
50031 + 50046 0840 Slough – Paddington
A very rare pair-for-pair move (at least in this neck of the woods).
After collecting my passport from the Polish Embassy (the main purpose of this trip) I turned round and headed back to Crewe, to work a late shift.
50050 0940 Paddington – Birmingham New Street via Coventry
86253 1220 Birmingham New Street – Crewe

Saturday 21/12/96
80079 1325 Bletchley – Bedford
DMU 1440 Bedford – Bletchley

Tuesday 21/12/99
Another work trip to Doncaster, with 91s this time:
91025 0830 Kings Cross – Doncaster
91005 1631 Doncaster – Kings Cross

Yeah but surely you must have improved your Galaxian score ?.

Then came space invaders iirc.

I was to be found at Bar Football tables and Pin Ball machines. But not overnight or in station buffets so a bit less useful use of my time.
