14th December 1985

Returning home after my first term of being a student. Worth saying that some of us had stayed up all night the night before, so I was in a bit of a state when I presented myself at the front door!

47530 New St - Sheffield 1E54
31436 Sheffield - Leeds 1L17
45131 Leeds - Newcastle 1E08
My equivalent on this date, but end of second year was...

86244 Wolves to WBQ, 1S39 07.34 Poole to Glasgow/Edinburgh.

My 1986 trip home was a bit different and comes in a week's time.

55012 1620 Harrogate – Leeds
46040 1707 Leeds – York
Due to the heavy pre-Christmas post, the Manchester Victoria portion of the 2150 York – Shrewsbury (which normally detached at Stalybridge) was running as an independent train, and it got a 40:
40078 2232 York – Leeds
DMU Leeds – York

Saturday 15/12/79
I’m not sure how or why I ended up in London, but this was a nice way home to York:
55005 1605 Kings Cross – York

Monday 15/12/80
The “Hull Executive” was very tightly timed for a Deltic, and was a favourite of the logging fraternity at the time. When I saw it had 55019 on it this particular evening, I had to have it:
55019 1705 Kings Cross – Retford
5' -> 3' late due to C&W attention to defective buffet water heater. Reached Newark (120 miles) in 80 minutes, thus achieving a 90 mph start-to-stop average speed despite running behind the 1708 KX - Royston (as far as Stevenage) and a 30 mph TSR at Potters Bar.
A notably swift performance from my pet Deltic! I wish I had a copy of that run properly logged.
55006 1905 Retford – Kings Cross

Thursday 15/12/83
40057 was active on the Pennines again, so after finishing early shift I went out to have it:
DMU Leeds – Huddersfield
40057 1430 Huddersfield – York
At York it was removed as booked, took fuel and water, then returned to the station for:
40057 1750 York – Scarborough
40057 1925 Scarborough – Huddersfield
45146 2203 Huddersfield – Leeds

Friday 15/12/89
After a night shift at Paddington, the 0718 to Wolverhampton produced something a little unusual:
31455 0718 Paddington – Reading

SUNDAY 15th DECEMBER 1974:

Returning South from our day trip to Glasgow, we had arrived at Carlisle on the G&SW overnight behind 50 031, which was replaced by:

86 042 Carlisle-Euston via Northampton

Then, after crossing London on the Northern Line, a further treat lay in store at Waterloo:

33 208 Waterloo-Woking
7353/7053 Woking-Petersfield

Thus in the space of little more than 24 hours we had achieved our first class 87 haulage and our first class 33/2 haulage. 33 208 was ex-works and had presumably been hi-jacked by Control for the first Sunday morning Waterloo-Exeter while making its way from Eastleigh back to Hither Green.

We were heading for a city break in Amsterdam. HST to St Pancras, a bit of sightseeing in London, a couple of pints in the 'Spoons at Liverpool St then:

86230 Liverpool St - Harwich P.Q.

Then an overnight ferry to Hoek van Holland (with next to no sleep) followed by an EMU to Amsterdam Centraal.

Worth noting that I didn't have all of the 86/2s for haulage. Some of those that transferred to East Anglia escaped my red pen - and I wasn't going to make a specific trip just to chase Cans.

Regarding 86s, I found very early on that simply standing in the right location with an expectant smile on the lips (hoping for practically anything other than an 86) was sufficient to make them appear as if from nowhere!
Truly AC electric duffs.

I've just found my 1986 book! :D

To put this trip into context, I'm going to have to regress a day or two. (Nothing unusual for me!):

At this time, I was working as a guard at Brighton and living in Lewes. I had a five day long weekend of rest days just before Christmas, so I decided to go and visit my grandmother on Teesside, my then girlfriend who lived a short distance South of Middlesbrough and then Scottish friends in Ayrshire. At this stage I didn't record unit numbers, which will be a great relief to most of you!

FRIDAY 12th DECEMBER 1986:

Lewes-Victoria-St Pancras (HST)-Sheffield via Derby (HST)-Darlington-Eaglescliffe-Middlesbrough-Great Ayton-Thornaby.

SATURDAY 13th DECEMBER 1986:

Stockton-Middlesbrough-Eaglescliffe.

SUNDAY 14th DECEMBER 1986:

Thornaby-Darlington (HST)-Edinburgh

47 705 Edinburgh-Glasgow QS HL via Falkirk Grahamston

Glasgow Central-Kilwinning-Stevenston

MONDAY 15th DECEMBER 1986:

Stevenston-Ardrossan South Beach-Glasgow Central

37 409 Glasgow Queen St HL-Garelochhead

Bus: Garelochhead-Helensburgh

Helensburgh Central-Hyndland-Glasgow Central LL/HL-Paisley Gilmour Street-Stevenston

I don't have a record of 86257 but it is marked in my Platform 5s so I know I had it. Of others the only ones I didn't have were 001, 005, 008, 009, 037, 038, 039 (with any number).

So now I'm going to have to go through my moves book to figure out how many Cans I had and which ones I missed...

Unless I'm mistaken, all my required ones still exist, although they're unlikely to haul any passenger services

Instead of one twin-engined (Deltic) loco on the 1613 York – Kings Cross, we’ve got two single-engined locos:
31405 + 31408 1613 York – Selby
At Selby, the 1404 Kings Cross – York was running so late that they put a special stop in the 1500 Kings Cross – Aberdeen instead:
55011 17xx Selby – York

Tuesday 16/12/80
The 2315 Kings Cross – Aberdeen was timed at 75 mph in order to give a better ride for the sleeping car passengers, so on occasion it would produce a class 40, as it could “time” the train with no issues.
40013 2315 Kings Cross – Doncaster, 18’ early.
(Wednesday 17/12/80)
55019 0310 Doncaster – Kings Cross
If I couldn’t have a 40 back from Doncaster to Kings Cross, then the next best thing was my pet Deltic.

Friday 16/12/88
All class 155 units were withdrawn from service from this date, due to instances of their doors coming open when moving. A small fleet of class 156s was sent from Inverness (where they had been about to be introduced onto the Far North and Kyle lines) to Cardiff to help replace the 155s. Meanwhile, 37/4s and stock came to the rescue:
37430 0757 Crewe – Liverpool Lime Street
37430 0915 Liverpool Lime Street – Cardiff Central
37430 1323 Cardiff Central – Newport
37426 1429 Newport – Cardiff Central
37426 1500 Cardiff Central – Rhyl
37426 1906 Rhyl – Crewe

Saturday 16/12/89
After a week of nights, I overdossed on my way home!
50035 0635 Paddington – Newbury
50035 0805 Newbury – Reading
At least I did it with a good loco.

Thursday 16/12/93
A work trip to Manchester:
86103 0950 Euston – Milton Keynes
90002 1038 Milton Keynes – Manchester Piccadilly via Northampton, Hixon, Stoke
87008 1630 Manchester Piccadilly – Euston via Crewe
One of each of the WCML's premier electric locos. Nice.

MONDAY 16th DECEMBER 1986:

Returning South after a weekend with friends in Ayrshire, I decided to sample the loco-hauled Ayr-Glasgow peak service, which at that time utilised the Mark 3 Inter-City set which then formed the 09 10 Glasgow-Euston....which effectively became a through train from Ayr to Euston:

87 016 Kilwinning-Glasgow Central
87 029 Glasgow Central-Euston
50 010 Waterloo-Woking
Units: Woking-Guildford-Redhill-Gatwick Airport-Lewes

The slightly convoluted return from London was planned in order to visit friends in Guildford for tea, so it would have been rude not to have had a trip behind a Hoover on a Waterloo-Exeter.

47401 Newcastle - York 1E26

A number of us took a late evening train to York for an overnight on the station. Using Persil vouchers to cut the cost. Why did we do this? All will be revealed tomorrow...

Tomorrow might be the first time that you, me and @CW2 were on the same move.
Well I was working early shift in Leeds Control that day.
(... but there was an earlier change-over on a Saturday). As @xotGD says, all will be revealed tomorrow ...

The CFPS were running the “Christmas Cracker II” railtour from York to Cardiff and return with class 40s, but I couldn’t get the time off work to do it. The best I could manage was to intercept it on the return journey:
47527 1330 Leeds – Manchester Victoria
86219 1515 Manchester Piccadilly – Crewe

45146 19xx Bromsgrove – Blackwell, Lickey Banker
40034 1937 Birmingham New Street – York via Bescot, Bushbury, Stoke, Stockport, Stalybridge, Leeds

Wednesday 17/12/86
37403 22xx Glasgow Queen Street – Stirling
This was the 1740 Fort William – Euston, which had been amended to attach to the Inverness – Euston sleeper at Stirling to overcome the issue of pillaging banditry and highway robbery in the Springburn area.

Saturday 17/12/88
Another day out on the emergency 37/4 diagrams:
37430 1000 Crewe – Cardiff Central
37430 1323 Cardiff Central – Newport
I alighted at Newport to view the progress in rerailing 37096, which had become derailed on Godfrey Road stabling point.
37431 1429 Newport – Cardiff Central
37431 1500 Cardiff Central – Newport
Another short session of viewing the rerailing progress …
37429 1613 Newport – Cardiff Central
37429 1650 Cardiff Central – Crewe
This last train was formed of a rake of Mk 2 air-conditioned stock, and included some FC compos (on this second class only route), so naturally I took one. As scheduled, it ran non-stop Hereford to Crewe, giving the unusual experience of going non-stop through Shrewsbury loco–hauled.
12’ late start, regained to 3’ late arrival.

Rumour has it that the Springburn bandits were after the Mars Bars kept in the Winter emergency supply box in the brake van....presumably so that they could sell them to their local chipper to be deep-fried in batter!

:D Seriously though, I believe the main target was the boxes of fresh salmon being sent from Fort William to Billingsgate fish market in London. These had a high monetary value - and a ready market amongst the restaurants of Glasgow. There were a couple of incidents where individual passengers were also relieved of personal possessions e.g. jewellery / watches.

Correct, much to the frustration of the Fish Farm and, no doubt their customers in London.
On one occasion when there was a problem on the West Highland I had to load said boxes of fish in tothe BR yellow Bedford van at Fort William and drive to Kingussie to load onto the Royal Highlander. Fortunately it was possible to drive the van onto the platform as there were quite a number of boxes, plus I got a few hours overtime out of it, although the van smelt of fish for a few days!

I have often wondered if the Springburn bandits were connected with those who caused the earlier re-routing of the vans loaded at Sighthill on a Friday for Oban and Fort William. Each evening the vans were tripped to Cadder and marshalled in the overnight freights, but as the freights ran Monday morning rather than Saturday morning the Friday vans lay in Cadder over the weekend and the bandits would remove cartons of cigarettes and spirits in the depths of the weekend. The solution was to trip to Cowlairs CS on Friday evening attach to the ECS and forward on the 01.00 Queen St Oban on the Saturday morning, with the FW van detached into the headshunt at Crianlarich and then attached to a northbound freight in the early hours of Monday morning.

After the overnight fester, we boarded the first Trans-Pennine service of the day:

45136 York - Leeds 1M56

And then, of course, it was the same train as the others have mentioned up thread:

Christmas Cracker II

40028 Leeds - Cardiff 1Z36
40028 Cardiff - New St 1Z36
45146 Lickey Banker 1Z36
40034 New St - York 1Z36

Then some more festering until we could get a northbound overnight in the early hours.

via Bescot, Bushbury, Stoke, Stockport, Stalybridge, Leeds
I hadn't appreciated that we took this route - 38 years later I can get my yellow pen out!

A Skoda with a funny number:

90221 Doncaster - Leeds
91029 York - Newcastle

The attempts to overcome the Springburn Bandits were extensive. It was strongly suspected that some members of BR staff were involved in tipping them off as to which vans were carrying salmon on which days, and also to tip them off about any BT Police presence, but this was never proven. One notable by-produce of all this was the wide range of routes adopted by the Fort William - Euston portion over those years. Once the notion of detaching at Cowlairs and running via Springburn was abandoned in 1983, the first solution was to detach the portion at Dumbarton Central and leave it there for a long time (long enough to walk out, go to the pub, visit the fish & chip shop, then get back on board and reclaim your seat, reeking of alcohol and causing an aroma of fish and chips to waft under the noses of the hungry souls on board the train!). At 2303 the train would then run via Clydebank, through Glasgow Queen Street Low Level (rare loco hauled), Sunnyside and Whifflet to Mossend. By 1984, the whole train was running into Glasgow Queen Street, splitting there, and the through portion then going north to Stirling to attach there to the up Inverness - Euston (instead of Mossend). In later years, depending on which train the Fort William portion was being attached to, the joining operation variously took place at Stirling, Mossend, Carstairs, Carlisle, and of course Edinburgh. Traction on the portion was usually 37, occasionally 27, and regrettable even the odd 47.

I didn't have the Peak recorded either. But annoyingly I didn't require it either.

The attempts to overcome the Springburn Bandits were extensive.

The Springburn area is not quite as bad nowadays, which is just as well given that Network Rail's West Delivery Unit, the West of Scotland Signalling Centre and Scotland Route Control are located there ! Having said that, when anyone asked for directions from Springburn station to us I used to tell them it was through the underpass stinking of urine, then past the wasteland and the burnt-out pub. Not surprisingly, most people drive to work there, but walking to work one day a female staff member encountered a flasher at the underpass. For getting there by public transport there could hardly be a worse place for a public transport organisation to locate a major facility.

I saw a 37 get re-railed at Newport sometime around then, Right on the last points in the throat of the stabling point / yard. Quite possibly it was the same event.

The loco had run through the trap points and embedded one bogie deep in the dirt. Initial efforts to rerail by jacking and packing failed, so in the end they had to get a crane in to lift it. The above photo shows that process near the end. You can see how deeply it was embedded by the amount of ballast disturbed by the derailed bogie.

I also recall that in the mid 80s container trains from Gushetfaulds (Glasgow freightliner terminal) were routinely being "stopped" in the Cambuslang area and emptied of their contents. I believe that illegally acquired track circuit operating clips to hold signals at danger were used. I was told this by someone I knew who worked in Glasgow control at the time.

Friday 18/12/81 (or “Tchaikovsky Day” if you know your Classical overtures)
55010 2320 Kings Cross – Peterborough
Did well to maintain time on load 11, despite being on only one engine, and a heavy snowfall.
(Saturday 19/12/81)
For the return journey, two engines were provided:
31174 + 31249 0131 Peterborough – Kings Cross

Saturday 18/12/82
The first and original CFPS “Christmas Cracker” railtour:
40035 0805 York – Dundee via Blyth & Tyne, Cardenden
40035 1518 Dundee – Mossend
40015 1805 Mossend – York via Holytown, Carlisle, Norwood, KE Bridge, Newcastle, High Level Bridge.

I was travelling to Harwich to join the night sailing to Hoek van Holland. I was en route to spend a couple of weeks in Poland, chasing obscure steam locos in long forgotten corners of the country, but first I had to get there. Nowadays I would probably get a cheap ticket with Ryanair, but back then it was still all part of the experience to travel across Europe from West to East by rail. Of course there was a through train at 1115 from Glasgow Central to Harwich which connected with the night sailing, but that had the unattractive prospect of many hundreds of miles of 86/2 and 47/4 haulage. Fortunately there was an alternative on offer:
85005 1045 Glasgow Central – Birmingham New Street
31416 1610 Birmingham New Street – Peterborough
At Peterborough I dropped back onto the Glasgow – Harwich:
47422 1852 Peterborough – Harwich Parkeston Quay
I had a comfortable night on the ship, and spent the following morning chasing examples of the 15xx class (former Manchester – Sheffield BR E27000 1500V DC electrics). I had runs behind 1501/3/5 before heading east into Germany.

Thursday 18/12/86
47550 0035 Stirling – Mossend
85036 01xx Mossend – Crewe
86410 0657 Crewe – Sandwell & Dudley
86435 0814 Sandwell & Dudley – Glasgow Central
I can’t remember what the purpose of this move was. Odd!

Wednesday 18/12/91
90002 1550 Euston – Liverpool Lime Street
I have some hazy memory of a work-related seasonal function of some description. Alcohol may have been involved.

Monday 18/12/00
… and another work visit to Doncaster. I chose my train carefully:
E* 3309 + 3310 1025 Kings Cross – Doncaster
