Thursday 23/08/79
Time for a quick trip home to York from my holiday job in Manchester. My shift ended after the last daytime services had run, so I had to go overnight:
86016 0027 Manchester Piccadilly – Stockport 25’ late, ETH fault on the stock
45002 0051 Stockport – York via Denton Jn, OA&GB Jn. 25’->50’->40’ late.
47075 1847 York – Manchester Victoria. 23’ late -> 8’ late. My notes read “Time recovered by lunatic driving over the Pennines. ‘The pubs shut at 1030’ said the driver.”

Saturday 23/08/80
I was booked to work another shift with the trolley, but first I had to get from Carstairs to London:
81021 0053 Carstairs – Crewe
81009 0520 Crewe – Euston
I arrived in good time to sort out my trolley, then head off to North Wales again (or possibly not …)
86248 1025 Euston – Crewe
I alighted at Crewe to refill my urns, with the intention of waiting for the 1418 to Holyhead, which was a pretty regular class 40 diagram at the time. As I waited on the platform, they announced a relief train to Carlisle. “Huh, so what” was my initial reaction. Just then the stock pulled in, 9 Mk 1 coaches hauled by 84003!
Sudden change of plan. To hell with North Wales, I’m off to Carlisle with one of the rarest class of Roarers. The guard was a friendly chap, and a bit surprised by my presence, but he understood why I was there. At Carlisle he was all in favour of continuing to Glasgow Central, but they couldn’t find a driver, so the train terminated at Carlisle and retired to the sidings.
As I stood at Carlisle, wondering how to get back south, a required 85 rolled in on the Blackpool – Edinburgh. Oh well, in for a penny …
85024 1726 Carlisle – Carstairs
… and at Carstairs they attached filthy 37061 – more used to hauling coal trains around Newcastle than passengers in Scotland, and very much required.
37061 1828 Carstairs – Edinburgh
I went to the buffet at Edinburgh, recharged by urns, and transferred in some stock, so I could work my passage back south.
55022 2045 Edinburgh – Kings Cross, via Knottingley, Hertford North
By now I was absolutely knackered, and set up shop in one of the compartments. Some Deltic bashers I knew offered to provide a waiter service to and from passengers who required it, so for the first – and last – time this overnight service was provided with an at-seat waiter refreshment service. All went well until the crew change at Newcastle, where a notoriously fickle Newcastle guard joined. He was often on night shift, as he worked in his parents’ corner shop in the daytime, and he was well known amongst the Deltic bashers as he was a stickler for ticket validity (whereas they preferred the modern attitude toward recycling of materials and ticketing). Unbeknownst to me at Durham the guard phoned ahead for the British Transport Police to meet the train at Darlington, to investigate the unauthorised selling of food and drink on “his” train. Sure enough at Darlington (where there was a permanent BTP presence, mostly to deal with the regular flow of squaddies to and from the camps in the area) PC Plod arrives, and starts to question me. I could prove that I worked for Travellers Fare, but explaining why I was on this train – without blowing his mind - required a certain degree of creativity on my part. Fortunately the Edinburgh Festival was in full swing, so there were additional trains to Edinburgh from all points of the compass, with a wide range of catering levels from full restaurant down to a single trolley – like me. Eventually he was satisfied I was doing no harm, but advised me to cease my sales activities. I was happy to comply, as the urn water was getting cool in any case. I carried on peacefully south to Kings Cross (via Knottingley and Hertford North), arriving at Kings Cross in plenty of time to push the whole performance down the Euston Road once more, ready to pick up my Sunday diagram. Quite an eventful day.

Tuesday 23/08/83
There was another required 37 on the Scarborough – Sheffield, so I set off after work to have it:
31404 1713 York – Scarborough
37048 1910 Scarborough – York
Word reached us that the 1710 Bangor – York had expired in North Wales, so I set off to intercept it to see what it would produce:
45046 2023 York – Dewsbury
25262 2041 Dewsbury – York, 85’ late.
A dud 25, oh well, still a novelty I suppose.

Saturday 23/08/86
The Haymarket fleet of DMUs was going through one of its periodic phases of breakdown, so the Edinburgh – Kirkcaldy stoppers were being loco hauled, with a turnover loco at Kirkcaldy to save time:
47708 1030 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh
27050 1235 Edinburgh – Kirkcaldy
26032 1331 Kirkcaldy – Edinburgh
47705 1500 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street

Wednesday 23/08/89
50023 1515 Paddington – Oxford
47807 1628 Oxford – Coventry
90009 1821 Coventry – Birmingham New Street
31469 1906 Birmingham New Street – Paddington via Coventry, Reading
Minimising the 47 mileage, en route to Birmingham for the required 31/4.

Monday 23/08/99
After the weekend shenanigans with loco hauled services on the Valley lines, it was time to head home:
37422 0723 Rhymney – Cardiff
43024 + 43168 0825 Cardiff – Reading

A trip to York from Teesside with some friends in 1962. One of our group had acquired a permit for York Shed. I also experienced my first Deltic haulage that day.
Fantastic memories! In 1962, aged 5, I spent a few holidays with my maternal grandparents, who lived alongside the Leeds Northern line about half a mile South of Eaglescliffe....and I can still remember standing on the footbridge at the end of Newsam Road watching the endless procession of freight trains hauled by B1s, J27s, K1s, Q6s and WDs - not to mention the regular pairs of what would become class 27s on the Tees Yard-York fitted freights, with their corridor connections joined together. The first 37s were just starting to arrive at Thornaby and were sometimes to be seen pushing or pulling brake tenders on unfitted mineral trains to supplement the efforts of the guard in his van at the rear.

Returning to more recent times, once again I have to post a couple of retrospective dates, having been away visiting friends 'darn sarf' for the weekend and not having had a chance to go on line for a couple of days:

I think that wins the prize for the maddest day you have described so far!
Let's just say that I can still clearly remember the name and appearance of the Newcastle guard, who featured quite prominently in my nightmares for a while!
The waiter refreshment service on 1E35 was hilarious - and quite profitable while it lasted.

As usual on the Friday before a Bank Holiday weekend, there are relief services running over the Pennines:
40002 1540 Manchester Victoria – Huddersfield (Relief)
46034 1648 Huddersfield – Manchester Victoria (on Air Con stock)
DMU Manchester Victoria – Preston
In a repeat of last Friday’s moves, I cover the Blackpool – Stranraer …
85009 1846 Preston – Carlisle
… and in a repeat of last Friday’s moves, 40113 works forward from Carlisle …
40113 2010 Carlisle – Stranraer
Front cab ride Ayr – Girvan, back cab ride Girvan – Stranraer, admiring the flames from the exhausts, standing in the open cab doorway!
There was an amusing incident at Stranraer, as one of the bashers, his young girlfriend, and another young lad travelling with them were all detained by police on suspicion of being “runaway teenage lovers” (which was a phrase then much in vogue in the “popular” press). Thankfully they were all released in time for the return journey with 40113.

Sunday 24/08/80
Back at Euston, having propelled my trolley along the Euston Road from Kings Cross, it was time to start trolleying all over again:
86243 0855 Euston – Crewe
47491 1149 Crewe – Chester
After refilling my urns at Chester, it was time for some more 40s:
40112 1314 Chester – Llanfairfechan
40136 1518 Llanfairfechan – Chester
474xx 1757 Chester – Crewe (probably 47491 again, but I can’t be certain)
86247 1839 Crewe – Euston
… and home for a long overdue rest.

Wednesday 24/08/83
I got wind of 50036 being allocated to work York to Plymouth, returning to the Western Region after overhaul at Doncaster. I booked a half day’s leave on the spot:
50036 1428 York – Birmingham New Street via Moorthorpe, Sheffield
By sheer good fortune there was also a class 40 working over the Pennines that afternoon, so I headed off to intercept it on its last working of the day:
86317 1733 Birmingham New Street – Liverpool Lime Street
40104 2040 Liverpool Lime Street – York

Saturday 24/08/85
47578 2335 Glasgow Central – Carlisle
This was the Bristol overnight service, running main line with a diesel because the overheads were off for maintenance. This was the start of 2+ weeks travelling around Europe…

Monday 24/08/87
…and (a couple of years later) this was my return home after 10 days, mostly spent in Austria attending the OBB 150th Anniversary railway celebrations:
47654 1355 Dover Western Docks – Mitre Bridge via Canterbury East, Chatham, Bromley South, Brixton, Mitre Bridge
87016 1609 Mitre Bridge – Crewe via Birmingham New Street

SUNDAY 24th AUGUST 1975:

The first day of a week's Yorkshire Ranger ticket - the last rover I ever did before joining the railway in November of that year - based at my grandparents' house near Stockton. Primarily a track bashing exercise - and therefore mainly units - but with a few locos thrown in for good measure:

E50224/56061 Thornaby-Darlington
55 020 Darlington-York
E50542/59203/59216/50589/50273/59240/59188/50288 York-Scarborough
E56473/51489/56394/50374 Scarborough-Hull
E51443/59535/50572 Hull-Doncaster
47 544 Doncaster-Leeds
E51954/51983/59773/59779/51976/51957 Leeds-Selby
47 522 Selby-York (original route via Riccall)
40 068 York-Darlington
E50207/56405 Darlington-Eaglescliffe

MONDAY 24TH AUGUST 1981:

Having arrived at Carlisle in the wee small hours behind 85 031, on the previous day's 22 15 Euston-Glasgow Central, I had an unexpected encounter with the Queen Mother....although I didn't realise it at the time, as the loco wasn't actually named until more than a year later:

47 541 Carlisle-Glasgow Central via Dumfries

Consist of previous day's 22 15 Euston-Glasgow Central: M81146, M80736 (BG), M2131 (SLF), M2625, M2666 (SLS), M2009 (SLF), M2818 (SLS),
M2410 (SLC), M25587 (SK), M15655 (CK), M5008 (TSO), M4974 (TSO), M25783, M25627 (SK), W5178 (TSO - Mark 2), M81351 (BG). Load 16 VB.

Well I won't give a move-by-move account of 2 weeks in Europe, as most folks on here won't be interested in that (I suspect), but here's the potted version:
Sun 25/08/85
Ferry to Oostende, straight across Belgium via Aachen
Mon 26/08/85
Cross Germany to Hamburg, up to Puttgarden, Ferry to Rodby, up to Kobenhavn. Meet friend (with whom I was to spend the next few days). Overnight ferry crossing to Warnemunde. Welcome to the DDR!
Tue27/08/85
Fell on the last remaining steam turn out of Rostock. Spent day mostly bashing 118 and 132 diesels, with a trip on the steam narrow gauge to Ostseebad Kuhlungsborn West for good measure. Ended at Greifswald (pre-booked hotel).
Wed 28/08/85
Trip onto Rugen Island, did Sassnitz, Binz, and the steam narrow gauge. Back to hotel.
Thu 29/08/85
Transition across country to Wernigerode via Berlin, picking up a selection of 132s on the way. (Another pre-booked hotel in Wernigerode).
Friday 30/08/85
Harz ng steam (then still DR owned and operated) Wernigerode - ET, ET - GErnrode. Selection of 11x "coathanger" diesels to Gusten. STeam 41 1132 Gusten - Schonebeck Salzelman, and on to Magdeburg (another pre-booked hotel).
Saturday31/08/85
Magdeburg Depot Open Day, located in the wondefully named Maybachstrasse. They had a class 132 on display, very clean and shiny. I was taken into the engine room, where the driver looked a bit embarassed when I pointed out the massive crack in the casing of the turbo. "Yes, we do have some problems with the turbos on these locos" he admitted.
Exit DDR via Probstzella to Wurzburg. Overnight to Nurnberg.
Sunday 01/09/85
Steam specials around Nurnberg. 01 1066, 01 118, 23 105. Overnight to Italy via Minchen, Brennero
Monday 02/09/85
Mainly sightseeing around Siena
Tuesday 03/09/85
DMU Torino - Cuneo - Nice
Various SNCF electrics overnight down to Irun
Wednesday 04/09/85
333 Irun - Madrid via Burgos, Aranda. Evening in Madrid, sighseeing. Overnight to Badajoz.
Thursday 05/09/85
1462 (CP version of class 20) Badajoz - Entroncamento. 1902 Barreiro - Tunes.
Friday 06/09/85
A day off on the beach.
Saturday 07/09/85
Oh heavens, I've got a nasty touch of sunburn. Stay inside on the trains all day is the best advice! Various nasty class 12 diesels, then (at last) some better EE power with 1806 Faro - Barreiro and return, out one route, back the other.
Sunday 08/09/85
1810 back to Lisboa, then 1939 on the overnight back to Madrid, re-engining at Valencia de Alcantara to ...
Monday 09/09/85
354 006 to Madrid, for 333 012 to Hendaye (on a decent heavy load). Overnight to Paris
Tuesday 10/09/85
TGV Paris Lyon - Geneve and Lausanne - Paris, with a few Swiss electrics thrown in.
Overnight Paris - Dunkerque, onto the train ferry (MV St Eloi) and back to the UK.

Let me know if we were in the same area at any particular date, and I'll look up the exact details.

No, we didn't. Close a couple of times. You were a couple of days behind us going Hamburg to Copenhagen and from West Germany to Italy.

I'm just putting the simple move in my daily updates as I don't have details of the trains. No one cares, but I'm enjoying the reminiscences...

I was also in Nurnberg that weekend, for the 150th anniversary celebrations, with a German friend who was then Assistant Station Manager at Mainz Hbf and is now the head of timetabling for DB Regio. We travelled on two of the steam specials - with 01 1066 and 23 105 - but I haven't so far been able to find my notes from that trip, so any details would be much appreciated. I also set off for Italy via Brennero on the Monday....but on a day train - EC 85 "Michelangelo" from Munchen to Rome - with breakfast, lunch and dinner taken in the restaurant car. Those were the days!

Obviously lacking funds to reach Hexham today:

37195 Wylam - Newcastle 2E42

24th August 1985

47212 Newcastle - Durham 1E28
37178 Durham - Newcastle 1S94
45139 Newcastle - Durham 1M32
47522 Durham - Newcastle 1E33

The Syphon was on the Yarmouth, extended to Edinburgh hence the unusual headcode. Here it is at the Toon. Once again, none of those in the photo is me, but I wonder if @47403 is putting in an appearance??? You wonder what 178 was doing in Norwich in the first place.

37178 | Another Newcastle Central view, with 37 178 having a… | Flickr

24th August 1988

Back to the West Highland, and a trip to the end of the line:

37409 Queen St - For William 1Y01
37410 Fort William - Mallaig 2Y51
37410 Mallaig - Fort William 2Y54
37409 Fort William - Garelochhead 1T34
37425 Garelochhead - Rannoch 1Y23
37410 Rannoch - Queen St 1D15
47470 Queen St - Perth 1L71

The loco that took over from the Duff at Perth was neither a 37 nor a 47. But you'll have to wait until tomorrow for that one...

68020 Huddersfield - Garforth 1E41

Required Cat! Yay! Who would have thought we'd be doing moves to Garforth back when the Trans-Pennine services went over to units?

68024 Garforth - Huddersfield 1F72

Not required, but some pleasing thrash through Morley tunnel.
I will be doing the Ned leap from Stalybridge to Man Vic tomorrow evening, all things being equal.

I've also got £2 return tickets from Wigan to Leeds and Leeds to York on 18th September from the Northern Flash sale, so I may combine that day with a move to Scarborough if I get as far as York or hang around Leeds on the West Yorkshire Day Saver.

The service could produce anything. 31, 37, 40, 45, 46. Therefore seeing a 47/4 roll in was a big disappointment.
Also purely out of interest was 1N04 a rear portion of the Kings Cross-Newcastle Sleeper that split at Darlington, and then ran via Stockton and Sunderland to Newcastle.

In earlier days is was a sleeper portion. By then 1N03 (southbound in the evening) 1N04 (northbound in the morning) were stand-alone services connecting in to/from the overnight at Darlington.

Gateshead would chuck out whatever loco was available, which is what made it interesting. In earlier days it could produce a Deltic.

Well I won't give a move-by-move account of 2 weeks in Europe, as most folks on here won't be interested in that (I suspect), but here's the potted version:
Certainly of interest to me, and I suspect quite a few others.
I had been wondering about the protocols for a 1990 European adventure of ten days or so, mainly rail but also including legs by air, sea (including train ferry), bus, tram, and overhead railway. Do I post day by day or should it be a ten day summary as per CW2? I am minded towards the latter. One for those interested to look out for the second week in September.

Sunday 01/09/85
Steam specials around Nurnberg. 01 1066, 01 118, 23 105.
Can't say it was the same date with any certainty, but I did one of the Nurnberg steam specials which took me to Amberg and back, can't recall which loco. On the same trip I did a Liege circular behind the streamlined Atlantic as part of the Belgian 150 year commemoration.

OK - referring back to my notes I travelled on an "EFZ" special as follows:
23 105 0938 Nurnberg - Neukirchen via Lauf, Neuenkirchen am Sand
23 105 + 01 1066 1132 Neukirchen - Bayreuth via Hersbruck (run round)
01 118 1516 Bayreuth - Nurnberg via Neuenkirchen am Sand
I think there was a DB-operated special running on much the same route, with which we interchanged locos and played leap-frog, so the photographers on each train could phot the other train passing by non-stop. If you were with somebody from DB, then I'd guess you were probably on that train, and not the EFZ charter I was on, but that's only a guess on my part.

Incidentally I arrived in Nurnberg behind OBB 1044.47 from Wurzburg, and departed for Munchen with 103 242.4, so a pretty fine day was had by all.

Like many other people of that time, I typed up all my travels for publication in European Report. I'm hesitant to re-type it all from scratch, as it's quite a lot of effort. The original files have long since been lost to various computer melt-downs / house moves / power surges / other natural disasters, but I still have the European Reports from long long ago.

Evening in Madrid, sighseeing

Fantastic typo (presumably!)

If I’d been in my twenties, in Madrid on a summer evening, I would certainly have been ‘sigh-seeing’ at some of the local attractions.

Sighs....

Well I guess as the thread starter it is up to me to decide on whether overseas moves should be included...

So please post whatever you like!

While some of us won't have a clue what you are talking about, I'm sure others will be interested.

Time for a quick trip home to York from my holiday job in Manchester. My shift ended after the last daytime services had run, so I had to go overnight:
86016 0027 Manchester Piccadilly – Stockport 25’ late, ETH fault on the stock
45002 0051 Stockport – York via Denton Jn, OA&GB Jn. 25’->50’->40’ late.

An 84 ! - I do not think I ever saw one move !.

That certainly rings a few bells. Thanks for that. Don't bother retyping everything....I'm sure there must be some way of reading back number European Reports on line....somebody must have digitised them.

I've had a quick look, and it jogged my memory.
1985 is before European Report was widely available - and before I contributed to it. What I used to do after each Continental trip (especially my regularPolish trips for steam) was to write up all the moves and sightings, lash together a story - sometimes with some photos - then photocopy the lot and give it to a few chosen friends. I still have the originals somewhere, but I've had a look and can't fine them ...
If I discover them I'll let you know.
