Northumbrian Ranger Day 5. A change of direction:

31124 Sunderland - Newcastle 1N04
47425 Newcastle - Carlisle 1M04
***Spotting session***
47425 Carlisle - Newcastle 1S15
46050 Newcastle - Durham 1M79
47583 Durham - Newcastle 1N31 (Not sure what this service was - additional from KX? Stratford escapee on the front)
47422 Morpeth - Newcastle 1E21

13th August 1983

Summer Saturday:

45066 Sunderland - Newcastle 1N35
47081 Newcastle - Durham 1M75
37120 Durham - Newcastle 1N13 (Worked forward from Doncaster - 37134 had worked from Norwich. I later had 134 as 684)
46051 Durham - Newcastle 1E71

13th August 1986

Generator on the locals:

47417 Newcastle - Sunderland 2E38

The Class 37 gen site shows 37128 working in the north east this day - so either the gen is wrong or I somehow contrived to miss it. Fortunately not required.

So I’m at Carlisle overnight and around 07:30 I start to tire out, eventually I have an hours doss on a Mail cart before the days proceedings begin!

86401 09:34 Carlisle-Oxenholme

87010 10:45 Oxenholme-Carlisle

40122 12:37 Carlisle-Leeds(12:37 Carlisle-Leeds 1E28)

40122 16:22 Leeds-Carlisle(16:22 Leeds-Carlisle)

87005 20:46 Carlisle-Preston(Glasgow-Manchester Victoria 1M40)

47515 22:19 Preston-Bolton(Glasgow-Manchester Victoria 1M40)

Haulage wise 40122 was a winner and 87005 good for the year.
Sights wise aside from the overnight coaching stock mentioned yesterday today I also added 144005, 150276 and 150277 at Leeds

Others seen….
47003 1S50 07:48 Carlisle-Glasgow Central
47406 08:37 Carlisle-Newcastle

The day should have started with a winner as 47003 was a need on 1S50 but for some reason lost in the midsts of time I flagged it, 47406 would have been done but I suspect I factored having to buy a ticket as it was pre the rover validity and not worth the cost.
I must have realised 40122 was on the S&C move so did a fill in move and then waited for another objective of the trip to be ticked off as I had it to Leeds & back, last time I would have a Class 40.
Having been chasing(amongst other things) TPO’s overnight it was perhaps fitting that todays final move would be on 47515 ‘Night Mail’!
Another good day out.

Tuesday 14/08/73 (2nd All Line Rover Day 7)
1106 (47523) 0715 York – Edinburgh
5410 + 5413 (27205 + 27118) 1200 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk High
404 + 425 (50004 + 50025) 1355 Glasgow Central – Crewe via Beattock
E3140 (86258) 1756 Crewe – Euston
DMU Paddington – Tilehurst

My final day of the rover, an early start from York and a large circuit taking in Edinburgh and Glasgow. 1106 seems much more exotic to my mind than 47523. After my experience the previous day with the northbound electric working through to Preston, I expected the 50s to come off there, but they ran through under the wires to Crewe. After another 86/2 to Euston, time for a rattling DMU to take me home, for a good bath and many, many hours of sleep!

Saturday 14/08/76
Having run out of validity on my rover tickets, I persuaded my uncle to drive me out to Hemerdon, where I spent the day watching trains climb the bank. It was my hope to see a Western make the climb, but there were very few Westerns about that day. I saw only one, late afternoon, ad that was on a Down train. Shame. Plenty of noise from the other diesels climbing the bank to make up for it though.

Tuesday 14/08/79
I decided not to cover any of the dragging via Shrewsbury, as it was likely to be mainly 47s, so I stuck to a North Wales bash:
40091 1540 Manchester Victoria – Rhyl
40167 1814 Rhyl – Crewe
86205 1902 Crewe – Preston 65’->70’ late, having been dragged via Shrewsbury.
DMU Preston – Manchester Victoria

Thursday 14/08/80
After a day visiting my parents in Plymouth, time to return home on the Up Midnight:
50018 (my class 50 machine) 0030 Plymouth – Paddington via Melksham
50041 pilot Plymouth to Exeter St Davids

Sunday 14/08/83
A day trip to Scarborough with my wife:
92220 0823 York – Scarborough via Harrogate, Leeds, York.
92220 1725 Scarborough – York via York, Leeds, Harrogate.

Wednesday 14/08/85
47702 1500 Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh
26046 1610 Edinburgh – Carstairs
They were a tad short of locos today, so 26046 was turned straight round at Carstairs to work back to Edinburgh immediately:
26046 1627 Carstairs – Haymarket, 40’ late.
I alighted at Haymarket to cover a Cardenden diagram that was loco hauled vice DMU more often than not, but evidently today I didn’t like what I saw.
47715 1815 Haymarket – Edinburgh.
The incoming portion from Poole (the train 26046 had worked) was usually used to work a Cardenden turn, but as it was late arriving today, it was switched onto the 1755 to Dunbar instead, which I made at Edinburgh by the skin of my teeth:
26046 1755 Edinburgh – Drem 25’ late
26046 decided enough was enough. “What’s with all this rushing around, I need a rest”. 26046 arrived at Drem in total silence. The guard walked forward to speak to the driver, then said to me “We’re terminating here. Can you announce it while I sort it out with the driver and Control?” I got on the PA system (remembering this was an air-con Cross Country half-set) and apologised for the loco failure. “Please leave the train now and await further information.”
Meanwhile the failure of 26046 had trapped the North Berwick service behind it, so Control got the 1718 Newcastle – Edinburgh to call additionally at Drem to cover for the return working from North Berwick, thus offering me an immediate way out instead of festering until 26046 was rescued:
47528 1920 Drem – Edinburgh
Back at Edinburgh, the 1844 Postal to Carstairs was running as a passenger train for some reason, and was over an hour late departing. Although the 47 was dud, I took it for the novelty value:
47357 1844 Edinburgh – Carstairs
27018 2150 Carstairs – Edinburgh – return ADEX from Southport
47460 2325 Edinburgh – Inverness

Sunday 14/08/88
86206 0017 Birmingham New Street – Stafford via Soho, Bescot, Bushbury
47447 01xx Stafford – Crewe
After a good sleep at home, I came out with a particular goal in mind:
87009 1348 Crewe – Rugby via Bushbury, Bescot, Aston, Stechford
86437 1527 Rugby – Birmingham New Street
87007 1655 Birmingham New Street – Crewe
Nothing unusual there, except for the fact that 86437 was the last 86 I needed for haulage, so by coming out this afternoon I cleared the class.

Monday 14/08/89
86413 1131 Crewe – Euston

You certainly fell on your feet with 37151. That was quite a biggy! Getting anything other than 47s over the Highland Main Line was rare by then, and to be enjoyed to the full.

31305 Heworth - Newcastle

More than far enough behind a 31!

Bit of a mixed day. At this time there was a through Saturday train between Blackpool North and Holyhead using the club train stock, which made accessing North Wales easy. Must have been a reason for taking a unit all the way home.

I’ve an idea that green 40 was a semi-permanent fixture on the S&C trains around that time.

47323 1M22 07:18 Nottingham-Blackpool N
47536 Blackpool N-Manchester Victoria(PM)
86221 AngloScot-Harwich PQ(13:20 ex Carlisle)

Picked up a winner today with 31270 on the Notts-Blackpool, winner for the year was 47545 on the G&S, had kept plugging away at the Carlilse-Glasgow in the vain hope a Non ETH loco would get chucked out after my success earlier in the week with 47150.
Sight wise, More Heaton Class 143’s ticked off the list as 143002 and 143023 hit the book at Carlisle.
The day had started dud as went for the AM Notts-Blackpool which threw out Non Heat 47323 but it was not required, so I headed to Man Vic for a brief deck chair session before heading North.
Probably S&C’d out(and hoping for no heat on the Glasgow) saw 40122 flagged at Carlisle!!

I couldn’t do anything about the diversions via Shrewsbury as a result of the Bushbury derailment as I was working in the morning, so I came out in the afternoon to do The Bangor. This was supposed to be a double-manned turn, but was running single manned because they were short of crews. The driver invited me to join him for some company, so I rode with him to Prestatyn, going back into the train there to sort myself out for my next move:
40112 1540 Manchester Victoria – Llandudno Junction
I turned down required 40183 on the 1805 ex Holyhead and waited for:
40149 1820 Llandudno Junction – Crewe.
This was the 1810 Llandudno – Birmingham New Street, and I was looking forward to the diversion via Shrewsbury. Alas not. Unbeknownst to me, the line had been cleared and the route reopened late afternoon, so at Crewe the 40 was detached. I headed back to Chester to pick up the return working of The Bangor.
DMU Crewe – Chester
40112 2113 Chester – Manchester Victoria
Once again I was invited into the cab. At Newton le Willows I was put in the driver’s seat, and drove the train as far as Eccles, where I achieved a good fast stop at just the right stopping point on the platform (40 mph at the approach ramp then full application). Not quite the day I’d planned for, but an entertaining evening nevertheless.

Thursday 15/08/85
There had been a pair of 27s working the Far North Line for the past couple of days, so I’d come to investigate:
37264 0635 Inverness – Lairg
37025 0825 Lairg – Inverness
It produced!:
27050 + 27042 1135 Inverness – Wick
We lost 40 minutes to Wick, with the 27s fighting one another. On arrival at Wick I noticed that 27042 was smouldering nicely from one of the traction motors.
27042 + 27050 1805 Wick – Inverness
27042 was subsequently assigned to Glasgow Works for Rectification (it only just having been released from overhaul), and the fun of pairs of 27s to Wick ceased forthwith.
47612 2330 Inverness – Stirling (Sleeper)
(Friday 16/08/85)
37402 0447 Stirling – Glasgow Queen Street (Inverness sleeper portion)
Waking up from my sleeper to a required 37/4 was a real treat. Also 37407 was already attached to the rear, waiting to work the stock up to Cowlairs.

Wednesday 15/08/90
I had to attend a meeting at Harwich, so I timed my attendance to fit with the boat trains:
90041 1455 Liverpool Street – Harwich Parkeston Quay
86244 1845 Harwich Parkeston Quay – Liverpool Street

Tuesday 15/08/00
I had to spend the day in Doncaster. Once again, I chose my trains with care:
91031 0800 Kings Cross – Peterborough
3301 + 3302 0849 Peterborough – Doncaster
91018 1535 Doncaster – Kings Cross
This was my first run with a North of London Eurostar set, which had been hired in to East Coast for domestic use. It was feared that running these more-powerful sets south of Peterborough during peak hours would cause the overheads to trip, so for the first few weeks (until a solution was found) this Kings Cross – York service was amended to start from Peterborough.
I eventually got all the North of London sets apart from 3307 + 3308, which I believe was cannibalised for spares and never worked in passenger service.

Rejecting it for a trio of ETH Duffs doesn't look to have been a great move with hindsight.
Must admit it was something you probably wouldn't do with Gen, that said not sure if have done it to Leeds having 'sampled the S&C twice that week!

Haulage wise a good day with 31124 and 47281 both winners on the PM/AM Notts-Blackpool circuit, another desperate attempt at a Non Heat Eastfield loco chucking out on the Carlilse-Glasgow drew another blank although 47543 was a winner for the year.
Sight wise, a TPO was pinged at Preston, Class 25 97251 was seen on Kingmoor Depot and potted for renumbering plus the obligatory Class 143 was added at Carlisle with143017 doing the honours today, it had been a good week for putting these away.

Picked up a winner today with 31270 on the Notts-Blackpool,
Never had 31 270 for haulage on the main line, but a French retired railwayman friend and I were very lucky to have had a cab ride in her form Matlock to Rowsley South on PeakRail about five years ago.

A tame end to my Ranger:

45121 Newcastle - York 1M69
46049 York - Newcastle 1E19

15th August 1986

A bunch of us were on our way to Keswick for a 3-day pub crawl. Sandwiched between a unit and a bus was:

87013 Carlisle - Penrith 1A40

15th August 1987

47566 Newcastle- Heworth 2J07

If Heworth is far enough with a 31, it certainly is with a 47/4.

After big mileage days in 1982 and 1983, it was Ned leaps for 3 required Goyles in 1986...

31429 Warrington C to Birchwood, 1E44 Lime St to Sheffield
31263/31278 Birchwood to Warrington C, 1M31 08.15 Yarmouth to Lime St

Thursday 16/08/79
40001 1105 Manchester Victoria – Chester
25241 1313 Chester – Manchester Victoria
The 25 then went on to work the afternoon Bangor diagram, and later failed on the 1930 ex Bangor.

Saturday 16/08/80
Another day out with the Trolley:
86256 1005 Euston – Crewe
40068 1418 Crewe – Llandudno Junction
47351 1809 Llandudno Junction - Crewe
86206 1809 Crewe – Euston 20’ late after special stops at Nuneaton and Bletchley.
After the exertions and excursions of last weekend, it was quite a contrast- and a rarity - to arrive back in Euston on the booked train!

Sunday 16/08/81
After working a full night shift in Willesden PSB, transport to get me to Euston was a bit limited at 0600 on a Sunday morning, so the signaller agreed to stop an ECS service for me right outside Willesden PSB:
83007 0620 Willesden WN96 signal – Euston
Cabride, in the ECS of an excursion to Aberystwyth.
86233 0855 Euston – Stafford
47476 1113 Stafford – Chester, 20’ late start waiting loco.
40136 1316 Chester – Llandudno Junction
40135 1444 Llandudno Junction – Manchester Victoria
I always coveted the split-box 40s as rather rare, so two examples on the trot was excellent. People drifted off to the pub, or home, but I hung around, wondering what 40 would work next. Just then, an unexpected noisy rumbling distraction arrived:
55007 1725 Manchester Victoria – Liverpool Lime Street, 7’ late -> 10’ early.
EMU / DMU Liverpool Lime Street Low Level – Chester
40106 1946 Chester – Shotton
47267 2010 Shotton – Manchester Victoria
Taking 55007 had cost me some mileage off 40106, but I didn’t regret it. I took the required NB 47 through to Manchester Victoria, dropping back onto Pinza’s return working:
55007 2202 Manchester Victoria – York
At York I watched and waited as a succession of southbound overnight trains came and went with unattractive (=Sulzer) motive power. Eventually, after several hours, the last possible train arrived:
(Monday 17/08/81)
55014 0341 York – Kings Cross
This train was so wedged that I ended up dossing in the guard’s chair in an unused guard’s compartment. Not a pleasant way to travel overnight.

Tuesday 16/08/83
46229 1858 York – York via Leeds, Harrogate
Scarborough Spa Express. 46229 was in poor shape, and we lost time. Entering Bramhope Tunnel there was a blow-back on the footplate, burning the driver. He carried on to York, but the train stopped adjacent to the depot, where he was assisted from the footplate and into a waiting ambulance to take him straight to hospital to deal with his burns. Apparently some of the nuts on the blower ring had worked loose, causing it to partially obstruct the blast from the chimney, hence the poor steaming and the blowback. The driver was off work for several weeks, but recovered.

Friday 16/08/85
Due to a guards’ strike the 1715 Glasgow – Nottingham was cancelled, so the 1705 Glasgow – Euston was retimed to depart at 1715 in its path:
87007 1715 Glasgow Central – Carstairs
The idea now was to pick up the pair of 25s which were allocated to the Exeter – Edinburgh relief – except the Controller swapped them at the last minute, hence:
27018 1813 Carstairs – Edinburgh
47710 1930 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen Street
A bit of a dud evening out. You have to take the rough with the smooth.

Couple of Ned moves, even shorter than my Warrington to Birchwood leaps...

, it was back on the West Highland Line for the morning...
You certainly packed in some moves there. Seven Syphons in the day, and still time for a trip east and back.

I think we've all done ned leaps between Waverley and Haymarket.

Presumably that was EMU to Helensburgh Central, walk to Helensburgh Upper to pick up the 37 from there?
37113 was an NB loco, so quite a rarity (even in summer) on the West Highland Line.

Anyway, here's my contribution for the day:

Friday 17/08/79
Another Friday night, and the target it the Blackpool – Stranraer. I’d arranged to work early shift Friday / late shift Saturday specifically so I could cover the Stranraer.
46001 1540 Manchester Victoria – Warrington Bank Quay
That wasn’t quite what I had in mind, but I had to take it anyway.
86244 1624 Warrington Bank Quay – Preston
DMU Preston – Adlington
40067 1814 Adlington – Preston
This was the 1745 Manchester Victoria – Blackpool North. With hindsight I’d have done better to ignore 46001 entirely and wait at Manchester for this, but hindsight is a wonderful thing.
81012 1846 Preston – Carlisle
We got off to a good Roaring start on the Blackpool – Stranraer, although 10 minutes late because of an ETH fault on the stock. At Carlisle, the booked class 40 was waiting for us:
40113 2010 Carlisle – Stranraer via Kilmarnock, Ayr.
We were delayed 25 minutes because the Ayr guard demanded heat in the unseasonably cold weather. Unfortunately 40113’s boiler was broken, so we went cold. Because of the delay we ran non-stop through Girvan – but somebody alighted there anyway!

Sunday 17/08/80
Another day out to North Wales with the trolley:
86214 0855 Euston – Stafford
47190 1113 Stafford – Crewe
40125 1149 Crewe – Chester
For once, I got a class 40 on my booked diagram! I alighted at Chester to re-charge my urns.
40058 1314 Chester – Llanfairfechan
40068 1518 Llanfairfechan – Chester
… and back onto diagram …
40125 1757 Chester – Crewe
86258 1839 Crewe – Euston

Wednesday 17/08/83
Sometimes, gen is useful. Other times, it can be very misleading …
45052 1710 York – Stalybridge
A refreshment pause, then:
45016 1916 Stalybridge – St Helens Jn (50’ late)
The purpose of all this Peak mileage was to pick up 40004, which was in diagram to do the 2040 Liverpool – York …
45134 2056 St Helens Jn – York
Instead what I got was more Peak mileage. Cheers then. Just for the sake of irony, the following day (when I didn’t spend all evening crossing the Pennines to cover it) 40004 did indeed work the 2040 Liverpool – York. A case of “Right Place, Wrong Time”.

Saturday 17/08/85
After an early shift in Glasgow Control I came out to scoop up a required 37. Recently-transferred 37299 had spent its entire career in South Wales until being reallocated to Eastfield prior to going in for refurbishment. It wasn’t apparent to us at that time which locos would get refurbished, and which would emerge as 37/4s (and be common on passenger work) or which would emerge as one of the later exotic freight sub-series. Just to be on the safe side, 37299 had to be hunted down and bagged.
37402 1650 Glasgow Queen Street – Crianlarich
37299 1910 Crianlarich – Glasgow Queen Street
On my way home from that mission, there was another distraction:
37083 2157 Glasgow Central – Ayr
47053 2303 Ayr – Paisley Gilmour Street
(As it happened, 37299 emerged as 37426, one of the 6 37/4s allocated to Canton primarily for working up and down the Marches and to Aberystwyth, so I was to have plenty of further runs with it in that guise in future).

Saturday 17/08/96
On my way home from a family holiday in Bulgaria, with the usual luggage mountain:
EMU Manchester Airport – Wilmslow
47828 1920 Wilmslow – Crewe
This was a through train to Birmingham New Street, but the last connection to Reading would have departed by the time we got there. Then we had a bit of luck. The preceding 1830 Manchester Piccadilly – Euston was having troubles at Crewe, with the TDM system not working correctly. As we arrived they were in the process of running round the train, so we boarded and settled down.
90003 1911 Crewe – Euston (50 minutes late)
43132 + 43140 2230 Paddington – Reading
