After my trip over the S&C and home via Newcastle I grabbed some overdue sleep. Then came out in the afternoon for more of the same …
47530 1547 York – Leeds
43109 + 43114 1645 Leeds – Wakefield Westgate
47083 1707 Wakefield Westgate – Leeds
After some fill-in moves picking up required locos, I did the regular evening bash to Settle, this time getting class 40s both ways.

40154 1807 Leeds – Settle
40070 1956 Settle – Leeds
DMU Leeds – Cross Gates
31120 2148 Cross Gates – Leeds
31111 2200 Leeds – Doncaster
47210 2325 Doncaster – Darlington
Why did I go to Darlington? Could it be to purchase another 3D ticket …

Monday 27/06/88
50038 0140 Waterloo – Yeovil Jn
50038 0515 Yeovil Jn – Salisbury
205 029 0604 Salisbury – Southampton
73111 + 73108 0712 Southampton – Bournemouth
73110 + 73134 0758 Bournemouth – Southampton Parkway
73126 + 73107 0900 Southampton Parkway – Bournemouth
73107 + 73126 1002 Bournemouth – Southampton
EMU 2001 + 8014 + 8030 1118 Southampton – Waterloo
86415 1330 Euston – Crewe
Pairs of 73s are out hauling 4TC sets about, whilst the 4 REP sets are being gutted for part of the class 442 programme.
This was the first (and only) time I had 86415 as an 86/4.

Tuesday 27/06/89
47448 1345 York – Warrington Central via Guide Bridge, Piccadilly
90003 1613 Warrington Bank Quay – Crewe
After a day working in York, this was my way home to Crewe. I’d forgotten about Newcastle – Liverpool trains running via Guide Bridge and Warrington Central. Crossing the throat at Piccadilly like that every hour, once in each direction, is a good reason it didn’t last long.

27th June 1987 - the overnight from Bristol was being diverted again:

47440 Cheltenham - Worcester Shrub Hill 1S19
37692 + 47440 Worcester - New Street 1S19

27th June 1988 - a West Midlands Daytripper in my final week of being a student. Highlight of the day was:

50031 New St - Coventry 1V96

Also had 47413, 86206, 86249, 87001, 86416, 86208, 86242, 86217, 47651

27th June 1989:

47566 Manchester Piccadilly - Newcastle

27th June 1993:

I had a day out on the Great Central, enjoying multiple runs behind the two kettles that were operating:

5593
34039

I see that neither of these is currently operational.

Deltic 19 was sat in the yard at Quorn, posing for photos in the sunshine. I know I've posted this shot earlier in this thread, but I can't resist including it again:

I had forgotten how many locations around the UK had the odd loco in them back in the 1970s. Usually a type 2. In those days one had to stay alert on a trip being ready for any siding that might contain a loco or two.

True indeed. The loss of newspaper, parcels, and wagonload freight traffic went hand in hand with the reduction in fleet size and infrastructure.

Yes indeed. Lots of locos went as wagon-load freight left the rails. Then as the HSTs & 56s, then 58s then 60s came along larger locos succumbed. Then locos disappeared as the sprinter revolution extended (158s) beyond replacing older DMUs. Then 66s must have wiped out getting on for a thousand locos. Pendolinos finishing off the roarers (81-85) and sending 87s abroad. Roughly speaking that is.

I remember when I was a lad learning that there were about a thousand locos at each of Tinsley, Toton and Thornaby*. Iirc Thornaby was one of them. All a long way from Strood !. There must be less than 3,000 in the entire UK now !. Class 08s and 09s amounted to a 1,000 !.

I've got a day coming up from 1980 when I did one of @CW2's 3D Tickets. I don't remember these at all but my spotting book suggests I had a York 3D ticket. As I say, this was a spotting trip and earlier today I was looking at it. It is so true that locos were all over the place. I'll include some of that as well as the haulage (there are two haulage highlights in amongst all the units and duffs).

When I came back into the hobby, my first day on a North West Rover, I didn't see a loco until late on that first day!!

Yes I can remember visits to Swindon Works in the early eighties, and the North Yard contained hundreds of redundant class 08,25, 31,40,45 and 46 locos awaiting their fate.

And the Westerns had gone to that fate before them. Funny to think that the Westerns were around for only fifteen years. the preserved Westerns have existed for another 45 years !. The HST power cars have worked for 45 years in front line service - three times as long. Whereas the 56s built around the same time as HSTs (1976 onwards at 15 per year for 9 years) have more or less all gone !. There were a lot of locos that only lasted 15 years +/- 5 years. Some were unsuccessful designs some were good but micro-fleets. The Deltics would have gone earlier had it not been for them being irreplaceable - until the HSTs came in so the Detics only lasted about 20 years.

If the UK had replaced steam even later than it did at about 15 - 20 years later then it might have been straight to multiple units for almost all trains !. I wonder if there would have been more electrification ?.

Nothing recorded for me on 28th June other than 2 x unidentified unit return trip from Aylesbury to High Wycombe in 1990.

I can’t recall the reason for this visit to London, but it was probably something to do with my intended move south if my A Level exam results proved favourable. After a class 40 all the way from Darlington, I went south of the Thames for an early dabble on the hauled services into London Bridge. After a round trip to Reading I returned south of the river for the evening hauled departures – including a 33/2 – then made my way to Kings Cross. I intended travelling back to York on the 2015 departure, but passing Ferme Park Carriage Sidings I noted 40101 attached to a set of stock, so I reckoned it would be working north on one of the passenger services. Indeed it was, the 2315 to Aberdeen being the chosen train. (This was a good bet for a class 40 as it was timed at a maximum speed of 75 mph for better comfort of the sleeping car passengers, so a class 40 could work the train and keep to the schedules).

Saturday 28/06/80
I’d got a summer job as a train trolley caterer based at Euston. Financially I would have been better off on the dole, but it gave me a legitimate means of bashing class 40s.
My official diagram was 1025 Euston – Llandudno and 1605 Llandudno – Euston. As the summer progressed, I stretched the limits of my roster more and more, but at the beginning I was relatively sensible:
86228 1025 Euston – Crewe
47476 1242 Crewe – Rhyl
I alighted at Rhyl to do the 1342 Llandudno – York. The outward journey had been worked by 40040, which was an elusive required Healey Mills VO beastie. I stood on the platform at Rhyl to await its arrival …
40049 1415 Rhyl – Warrington Bank Quay
40040 had failed at the last moment at Llandudno with ringing fire bells, so it was swapped for 40049. As far as I am aware 40040 never worked another passenger train, so I never had it. So close, and yet so far…
40015 1619 Warrington Bank Quay – Chester
47476 1717 Chester – Crewe
86228 1809 Crewe – Euston

(Saturday 27/06/81)
By now I was living in London and had a job on the railways. That meant I was on poverty wages and working as many hours as possible, simply to survive. Just occasionally I’d come out when there was a class 40 about:
40157 2320 Kings Cross – Bradford Exchange, via ECML, Hare Park Jn, Wakefield Kirkgate, Wakefield Westgate, Leeds, Heaton Lodge Jn, Elland, Greetland, Halifax.
A mammoth overnight with some interesting curves and lines to get from Leeds to Bradford as the direct route was closed.
Sunday 28/06/81
I had to head straight back to London, as I’d promised to take my girlfriend to Hastings for the afternoon, so it was HST all the way.
43062 + 43119 0820 Bradford Forster Square – Kings Cross
DEMU 1035 1245 Charing Cross – Hastings
DEMU 1016 + 1031 1844 Hastings – Charing Cross

Tuesday 28/06/83
Working in the offices in York, I discovered an urgent need for a half day’s leave, along with another 40 basher who worked there:
43xxx + 43xxx 1309 York – Edinburgh
40009 1643 Edinburgh – Manchester Piccadilly via Carstairs Avoider, Beattock, Ais Gill, Wilpshire, Blackburn Farington Jn, Golborne, Parkside, Castlefield
40009 on load 10 on a long distance charter over some of the best hills in Britain. The train got looped at Beattock Summit for an electric to overtake, so (with the full blessing and participation of the traincrew) we held an impromptu photo stop there. From Blackburn the train ran ECS back to Longsight, so we arranged with the crew for a brief stop at Piccadilly to set us down. One of the better days out. (Incidentally 40009 had worked the outward train all the way from Manchester too, and performed faultlessly throughout).
(Wednesday 29/06/83)
85034 0030 Manchester Piccadilly – Stockport
47555 0050 Stockport - York

Thursday 28/06/84
My job in Leeds Control was being abolished under a reorganisation, so I was casting around for somewhere else to work. A vacancy in Glasgow Control had arisen, and it would mean promotion too. I was lucky enough to get an interview, so wearing my best (and only) suit I set off for the interview.
43196 + 43121 0647 York – Edinburgh
This was the 0620 Leeds – Aberdeen, fresh off Neville Hill. I sat in the TGS at the front. As we powered away from York, I noticed there were some smears of oil on the window. It soon became apparent that 43196 was throwing oil. By the time we reached Durham it was quite serious – there were thick smears of oil along the side of the train, over several coaches. At Newcastle we were met by a fitter with a big can of oil, intending to top up the supply. No thanks, what we need is some way of keeping the oil in the engine instead of distributing it along the train. The problem was “solved” by shutting down the front power car, and carrying on single engined. We struggled on in this fashion to Edinburgh where the oil-soaked train was taken out of service. Passengers were invited to join the replacement connecting train to Aberdeen, which was (required) 37245 on 9 Mk 1 coaches! Unfortunately I had an interview to go to, and I didn’t think that “I’m sorry I’m late for my interview, but I needed the 37 on the Aberdeen” would be a good start…
47702 1030 Edinburgh – Glasgow Queen St
I don’t remember much about the interview, except for one question:
“What types of electric locos could I see in Glasgow Central station?”
“Classes 81, 85, 86 and 87.”
“So not 82, 83 or 84 then”
“No, those are all withdrawn now, apart from some locos used on ECS services Wembley to Euston.”
“Are all class 86 locos the same?”
“No” (followed by long explanation of the various sub classes and their differences).
The thoroughness of the answer helped get me the job – although I didn’t find that out until much later – and I was also marked out as a potential loco controller from an early date. Anyway, after the interview, I headed across to Edinburgh with a hope of picking up the return working of 37245, which was the 1300 Aberdeen – Kings Cross “The Talisman.”
47706 1300 Glasgow Queen St – Haymarket
27023 1351 Haymarket – Edinburgh
27055 1418 Edinburgh – Inverkeithing
Here I waited expectantly for 37245 …
47334 1507 Inverkeithing – Edinburgh
They had swapped the locos at Aberdeen. Oh well, at least it’s required. The train terminated at Edinburgh, with passengers forward to Kings Cross on other services. I headed home:
43076 + 43048 1735 Edinburgh – York

Friday 28/06/85
81003 2320 Glasgow – Carlisle (Paignton)
37401 and 37403 had been released ex Crewe Works, the first members of the sub-class to enter traffic. They had run to Carlisle and were both allocated to the 0605 Carlisle – Glasgow via Dumfries, so I took this overnight to sample my first 37/4 haulage …
(Saturday 29/06/85)
85002 0355 Carlisle – Glasgow Central
The 37/4s were deallocated from the 0605 to Glasgow, so I headed back home with this required Roarer. 37/4s would have to wait for another day (they were full of faults, and returned to Crewe Works for rectification before a second attempt).

Saturday 28/06/86
Glasgow Queen Street was shut for engineering work, so services were diverted to Glasgow Central:
47707 0800 Glasgow Central – Falkirk Grahamston via Rutherglen East, Whifflet North, Carmuirs West
47705 0851 Falkirk Grahamston – Glasgow Central (reverse of above route)
47454 1005 Glasgow Central – Inverness via Hamilton Circle, Motherwell, Mossend, Perth
The idea of going to Inverness was to pick up a return SRPS charter with 40122, but there were some moves to be made beforehand:
37414 1735 Inverness – Dingwall
37419 1825 Dingwall – Garve
37419 1857 Garve – Inverness
Inverness was having one of its periodic power shortages, and they didn’t have any loco fit to work the 1755 to Kyle. 37419 was made fit to be used, restricted one trip, local work only, so it worked the 1755 Kyle as far as the crossing point at Garve, and exchanged locos with the 1710 Kyle – Inverness there, so I ended up having the same loco there and back again. I only just made it!
Some bashers decided to stay at Inverness with the aim of boarding the SRPS special from Kyle as it re-engined to 40122 on the Inverness avoiding line. I considered that too dodgy, and headed south to Aviemore:
47640 2030 Inverness – Aviemore
40122 2225 Aviemore – Mossend
(Sunday 29/06/86)
47063 01xx Mossend – Paisley Gilmour Street via Hamilton Circle, High St Jn, Shields Jn
I negotiated a one-way fare from Aviemore to Paisley – and noted that those people who tried to board on the Inverness Avoider had been repelled, and were now looking forward to a long night in Inverness!

Wednesday 28/06/95
RfD class 90s were on hire and being used on passenger services out of Kings Cross.
90022 1310 Kings Cross – Retford
90023 1451 Retford – Kings Cross

Inverness Depot: 08 568/728, 25 064/068/226/229, 26 011/017/019/021/023/026/029/030/037/039, 47 464.

A quick late evening shed bash, by kind permission of the night shift foreman, rounded off a very full day before retiring to our B&B.

Sunday 28th June 1981:

The final stage of my long journey back to Glasgow from Switzerland. After an overnight and (non-railway) day with my friend in London, I treated myself to a sleeping berth for a change:

86 329 22 15 Euston-Carlisle (Formation: BG M81347/M81592, SLS M2628, SLF M 2067, SLS M2666, SLF M2009, SLS M2614, SLC M2449, CK M15655, TSO M5008/M4974, SK M25783, TSO M4849, SK M25627, CK M16127, BG M81548. (Load 16).

See tomorrow's thrilling (?) climax to find out what hauled me from Carlisle to Glasgow Central via Dumfries.

I headed across to Edinburgh with a hope of picking up the return working of 37245, which was the 1300 Aberdeen – Kings Cross “The Talisman.”
Did you get 245 in the book subsequently? I'd managed to have it on the Yarmouth - Newcastle a couple of years earlier:

I had it from Stockport to Liverpool Lime St on 1M39 15.22 off Sheffield on 7th July 1986. @CW2 probably ended up having it from Dover to London Victoria or something equally obscure lol.

Tuesday 28th June 1977:

Locos seen:

Pitlochry: 40 123 (on 08 10 Glasgow QS-Inverness).

Dalwhinnie: 26 027 (flying solo on 18 55 Inverness-Euston!)
40123 was an early withdrawal at Haymarket. If I remember correctly it was stabled outside the depot for several weeks awaiting maintenance, then we saw it being dragged to Millerhill with the engine running to empty the fuel tanks. I never did get it for haulage.

A single 26 on an Inverness - Euston would have been quite rare. Do you have any idea of the load?

I did have it eventually, and to somewhere quite unusual for loco haulage (then at least). Give it another couple of weeks, and all will become clear ...

Still at school it was a case of the cheapest ticket possible for as many lines in the book so today was one of those scratchcard Peak Wayfarer tickets and a load of leaping between Manchester Piccadilly and Stockport.

The wires didn’t usually come live until to mid afternoon so everything was diesel hauled/dragged up until that point, generally a festival of ETH Class 47’s.
Didn't note what trains which loco worked but generally the 31's was on the Liverpool-Sheffield circuit.

47478 10:14 Bolton-Manchester Victoria
47547 11:25 Manchester Piccadilly-Stockport
Presume a DMU back to Picc(didn’t record units/HSTS back then for travelling on/behind)
47535 12:50 Manchester Piccadilly-Stockport
47649 13:04 Stockport-Manchester Piccadilly
DMU Manchester Piccadilly-Stockport
45150 14:06 Stockport-Manchester Piccadilly (1M87 Harwich Parkeston Quay-Manchester Piccadilly)
DMU/HST back
31447 15:09 Stockport-Manchester Piccadilly
45150 15:25 Manchester Piccadilly-Stockport (1E87 Manchester Piccadilly-Harwich Parkeston Quay)
47616 16:03 Stockport-Manchester Piccadilly
DMU/HST back
31427 16:49 Stockport-Manchester Piccadilly
31421 17:06 Manchester Piccadilly-Stockport
47484 18:07 Stockport-Manchester Piccadilly (Cardiff-Manchester Piccadilly)
47484 18:29 Manchester Piccadilly-Stockport (Manchester Piccadilly-Cardiff)
31444 18:49 Stockport-Manchester Piccadilly.

Sadly the red pen wasn't needed all day.

After the trip to Scotland for 40009 the previous day, and the overnight home via Stockport, I wasn’t really planning on another overnight. However 40015 was allocated to the 0005 Kings Cross – Newcastle …
47416 2234 York – Peterborough
(Thursday 30/06/83)
40015 0130 Peterborough - York (…and home to bed for a few hours)

Monday 29/06/87
318 265 +318 269 1440 Glasgow Central – Carstairs
87028 1521 Carstairs – Crewe

Thursday 29/06/89
Off to work a night shift training in York:
37408 1856 Crewe – Manchester Piccadilly
47488 1945 Manchester Piccadilly – Leeds via Guide Bridge, Stalybridge
47443 2045 Leeds – York
The 1852 Liverpool – Newcastle was originally allocated 47522, but that failed before departure, so the incoming loco 47488 was shunt released and worked from Liverpool. Unfortunately it was short of fuel, so came off at Leeds to be replaced by 47443.

Saturday 29/06/91
A summer Saturday in search of new locos:
47810 0633 Reading – Birmingham New Street via Coventry
47314 0847 Birmingham New Street – Leicester via Stenson Jn, Sheet Stores Jn, Trent South Jn. (This was a train to Yarmouth, taking this route to avoid reversal).
43074 + 43065 1047 Leicester – Nottingham
20071 + 20135 1227 Nottingham – Sheffield via Radford Jn
The prime objective of getting a pair of 20s into Sheffield was achieved. After that, it is all a bit flaky:
47594 1450 Sheffield – Leeds
91013 1620 Leeds – Doncaster
91031 1655 Doncaster – Kings Cross (new for haulage)
47708 1920 Paddington – Reading

Thursday 29/06/95
43146 + 43150 0740 Reading – Bath Spa
150 248 Bath Spa – Bruton
There was one of the Scottish 37/4s which I could never catch up with in Scotland, namely 37412. It eluded me entirely on the West Highland Line. Then when the bridge failed at Inverness it was caught on the north side of the failure for several months, and whenever I tried to have it, it went into hiding. Now, in England, it has been reported working Bristol – Weymouth services, so I’ve gone to the utterly obscure station of Bruton to pick it up, thus clearing my 37/4s for haulage…
37412 0942 Bruton – Bath Spa. Job done.
37230 1051 Bath Spa – Southampton via Chandlers Ford. 10 late -> 30 late. Vice DMU.
37230 1233 Southampton – Westbury via Redbridge. 20 -> 35 late, train terminated and restarted as a DMU (which is what it should have been all along).
158 866 Westbury – Bath Spa
43129 + 43179 1458 Bath Spa – Swindon. This was the Cardiff – Waterloo Eurostar Link service.
43026 + 43030 1528 Swindon – Reading

My memory is a bit hazy on that, but I think it may have been the Summer dated sleepers only relief service, so probably about load 7.

29th June 1985 - a successful Summer Saturday in the North East:

37033 Newcastle - Durham 1E28
37216 Durham - Newcastle 1N35
47522 Newcastle - Darlo 1E97
37017 Darlo - Newcastle 1N13 (What was an Eastfield 37 doing in Norwich?)
45125 Newcastle - Darlo 1M32
37033 Darlo - Newcastle 1S51

37216 was the first Syphon I had for haulage back in 1982, so while others around Newcastle eulogised 37250, I always had a soft spot for 216.

Here are 017, 033 and my machine in action:

Class37.co.uk

Class37.co.uk

Class37.co.uk

29th June 1986 - Nuneaton drags:

47542 (+86433) New St - Nuneaton 1O29
47531 (+87005) Nuneaton - New St 1G05

Should have stayed in bed!

29th June 1991 - faffing about in the West Midlands with:

For some reason my regular Saturday afternoon trip to Selby to pick up the Yarmouth – Newcastle was off the agenda. I covered some other Saturday Only holiday trains instead:
47293 1521 York – Sheffield via Cudworth (1338 Newcastle – Swansea)
45053 1723 Sheffield – Leeds (1055 Weymouth – Leeds)
46014 1912 Leeds – York (1000 Newquay – Newcastle)
I needed both the first two locos, and these were the only runs I ever had with those locos.

Saturday 30/06/84
After a night in Leeds Control, the sensible course of action would be to go home and sleep. However …
43112 + 43105 0730 Leeds – York
A (very) quick trip home, then back out for
45150 0856 York – Newcastle
40028 1046 Newcastle – York (Relief Glasgow – Scarborough)
37105 1346 York – Newcastle (Yarmouth – Newcastle)
47214 1720 Newcastle – Doncaster
This 47 was on load 12, a scratch set put into service when a northbound HST failed at Sheffield. This was the return working to Bristol. I’ve no idea how far it worked.
43194 + 43155 1912 Doncaster – York

Friday 30/06/89
After training on a night shift in York, I escaped a little early to have a little play on the ECML. At this time the class 91s were entering traffic, but the Mk 4 coaches were not yet available, so the 91s were being used in place of a power car of an HST, working in multiple with the class 43 on the other end of the train. That gave you quite a lot of horsepower to play with!
43113 + 43155 0600 York – Doncaster
91005 + 43013 0632 Doncaster – Grantham
91007 + 43068 0751 Grantham – Kings Cross
87021 0925 Euston – Crewe
A couple of hours doss, then another desperate long-distance leap:
90010 1324 Crewe – Birmingham New Street, re-engined to:
47606 1430 Birmingham New Street – Bristol Temple Meads
There, at last, I caught up with the elusive 37350 aka D6700:
37350 1654 Bristol Temple Meads – Weymouth
37350 1944 Weymouth – Bristol Temple Meads
Mission accomplished. Now home to Crewe on the Bristol – Glasgow sleepers, featuring the loco I’d arrived from Birmingham taking me back to Birmingham.
47606 2248 Bristol Temple Meads – Birmingham New Street
This was now only load 9 ex Bristol, so no need for the Lickey bankers any more.
(Saturday 01/07/89)
85031 0033 Birmingham New Street – Crewe
…and home to bed for a few hours, before coming out for more …

Sunday 30/06/91
205 028 Reading – Basingstoke
50018 0815 Basingstoke – Exeter St Davids
50018 1220 Exeter St Davids – Paignton
4555 1430 Paignton Queens Park – Kingswear
4555 1515 Kingswear – Paignton Queens Park
50018 1735 Paignton – Basingstoke
205 032 Basingstoke – Reading
Class 50s had always been attractive to me, and 50018 was my favourite. These were my final runs off my machine – a fine day out at the seaside. When I alighted at Basingstoke there was a distinctly warm simmering aroma coming from the traction motors, with wisps of blue smoke to be seen. An average speed of 102 mph Grately to Andover and the sweltering hot day may have been factors in this. Whilst it was stabled at Paignton I took this photo for the comedy value.
The placement (and content) of the loco nameplate were perfect in relation to the notice. At least it was silent and stabled when I took the phot, so it kept its resolution.
50018 was withdrawn from service on 22 July 1991, some three weeks after this trip.
It survived for a while, but was eventually scrapped at MC Metals Glasgow in January 1993.

Thursday 30th June 1977:

Heading South after our glorious week in Scotland....with an early morning fill-in Carlisle-Newcastle and back, then the Settle-Carlisle and MML to London:

86 006 00 xx Carstairs-Carlisle (18 55 Inverness-Euston.....so 26 027, seen two days earlier at Dalwhinnie, must not have been on a sleeper-only service)
E51247/E56091 02 50 Carlisle-Newcastle via Gateshead
E56082/E51429 06 45 Newcastle-Carlisle
45 061 09 35 Carlisle-Leeds (service continuing to Nottingham)
45 114 12 xx Leeds-Chesterfield via Cudworth (same service as above)
45 136 14 xx Chesterfield-St Pancras via Derby
7353/7422/7412 17 32 Waterloo-Petersfield

Our bleary-eyed fester at Newcastle from 04 10 to 06 45 was quite productive from a spotting viewpoint and attracted attention from the British Transport Police. However, I was easily able to convince the lovely Geordie WPC that our motives were not terrorist-related and she wished us the best of luck. Why on earth was there a DMU service from Carlisle to Newcastle at that ungodly hour of the morning? Was it to convey newspapers off the Manchester paper trains to places like Haltwhistle and Hexham?
