A Saturday afternoon bash in search of class 40s. The Yarmouth – Newcastle (1441 ex Selby) was always a good bet, but the 1627 York – Kings Cross was a big bonus.
47519 1413 York – Selby
40176 1441 Selby – York
40199 1627 York – Selby
47521 1659 Selby – York
40075 1733 York – Huddersfield
46051 1834 Huddersfield – York

Thursday 27/05/82
86035 0243 Preston – Euston
82004 1815 Euston – Northampton
EMU Northampton – Rugby
86218 2004 Rugby – Euston
An 82 on the “Master Cobbler” – what’s not to like. Coming back into Euston with the 86 from Rugby, we passed the 2055 to Stranraer around Primrose Hill with 82008 on the front. That rather eclipsed my run to Northampton - I could have had an 82 all the way to Carlisle.

Friday 27/05/83
I was working in the timetable database office in York, and work was a bit slack temporarily, so the boss told each of us to take a day out to familiarise ourselves with the railway. Suitably furnished with passes, I decided to do the Darlington to Eastgate trip.
43xxx + 43117 0815 York – Darlington
Lesson no 1 was “Never believe the Timetable”. I reported to the traffic manager at Darlington to be told the Eastgate trip had long since departed, running about an hour ahead of schedule. Curses. Quick, I need a Plan B.
Plan B was to go to Newcastle to look at the MGR coal operation.
47518 0935 Darlington – Newcastle
On arrival at Newcastle I spoke to the signalman and discovered a loaded train from South Hetton Colliery to Blyth Power Station would be arriving shortly. 56081 duly rolled in with 32 MGRs in tow (HAA or equivalent), I presented my passes to the driver, and off we went. This was the first time I’d been in the cab of a 56, and my first experience of riding a freight train. I’d done the Blyth & Tyne route before, but the branch into the power station was all new to me.
On arrival there, I had the choice of sticking with the train as it was all unloaded, or stepping straight across onto 56078, which was waiting to depart empty to Easington Colliery. I chose the latter.
56078 1215 Blyth Power Station – Easington Colliery
56078 1510 Easington Colliery – Newcastle
At Easington we had to draw the train empty through the hopper then set it back slowly, downhill, as it was loaded, requiring a great degree of skill from the driver. The real fun came with trying to restart the loaded train (30 HAAs) from Easington Colliery onto the main line. The 56 just would not grip. It was wound up to screaming pitch and left there for some considerable time before – eventually – we got a bit of grip and slowly – oh so slowly – inched our way out onto the main line. It was a real eye-opener to see at first hand the way these trains were operated. I think none of my office colleagues took quite such an adventurous approach to their days out!
HST 1642 Newcastle – York

Tuesday 27/05/86
I was working early shift on the Queen Street + Perth power control desk. My night turn colleague had left me a note saying that there was a class 27 at Perth that was needed at Dundee for a ballast working that night, and he had tried and failed to find anybody available to move it. My calls to the traincrew supervisors that morning met with the same response. There wasn’t a body to be had. Then I had a brainwave. The “Arbroath” diagram had a 27 on it that day. The circuit was Dundee – Edinburgh – Perth – Glasgow QS – Arbroath – Dundee. So, all I had to do was multi up the spare 27 at Perth during the layover there, and it would automatically end up at Dundee (having travelled a considerable distance in the meantime). It all worked out – so I had to go and have the pair of 27s on the 1603 out of Queen Street, just to be sure!
27003 + 27056 1603 Glasgow QS – Dundee
27046 1830 Dundee – Haymarket
47701 2003 Haymarket – Glasgow QS

Wednesday 27/05/87
40122 0800 Crewe – Cwmbran
37429 1111 Cwmbran – Crewe
(Another night shift, another irresistible daytime bash)…

Saturday 27/05/89
37408 0958 Crewe – Abergavenny

Monday 27/05/96
87001 1540 Euston – Crewe

47033 Warrington Central to Ely
47033 Cambridge to Warrington Central

This must have been a Merrymaker or Charter of some sort. I vaguely recollect going past March which was heaven for a spotter from the North West and also featured on this thread yesterday! It was a family day out - visiting Ely and Cambridge - really, with spotting a bonus. I don't have a record of how we got from Ely to Cambridge or the route taken. The Duff was apparently allocated to Laira at the time. Go figure. I also had it in 1983 from Leeds to York (on a Bangor to York service) when it was allocated to Cardiff!

Tuesday 27th May 1980

This is much better!

55018 Retford to Doncaster
55018 Doncaster to Retford.

This would have been a spotting trip with units for the rest of travel to and from Warrington. We may have taken the bus out to Tinsley from Sheffield (2p fare?) , we might well have stopped off at Worksop, we certainly would have had a look around the outside of Doncaster Works. Would have been a lot of cops for spotting. As I've said before, I didn't have many Deltics for haulage.

Wednesday 27th May 1981

Sitting in splendid isolation in my class listings is

45148 York to Sheffield

Again, probably a spotting trip. Probably generator Duff across the Pennines to get there and unit across the Hope Valley back.

Thursday 27th May 1982

47483 Warrington BQ to Llandudno Junc, bad start to the day with this rubbish turned out on 1D35 which was the 09.45 Man Vic to Bangor, often a 40 but not to worry as...
40092 Llandudno Junc to Manchester Vic on 1J30, the return morning Bangor. 092 stayed out on the afternoon Bangor, but I went North...
40198 Man Vic to Barrow on 1P17, 15.13 off Vic
40198 Barrow to Liverpool LS on 1F32, 18.30 off Barrow.
Unit back to Warrington.

An enjoyable day.

Friday 27th May 1983

A year later and I missed the two 40s that were out in the North West. 118 had carried on its Barrow and Manchester diagrams in the morning and 090 ended up on the last run of the Bangor diagram. I appeared to have only come out late in the hope of a 40 on 1M22. Ah well...

85031 Warrington BQ to Preston
47182 Preston to Wigan NW on 1M22
86317 Wigan NW to Preston
UNIT Preston to Liverpool LS
507012 Liverpool Central to Hunts Cross.
Did this to get the "new" line as the Northern Line on Merseyrail had just been extended from Garston.
UNIT Hunts Cross to Warrington C

Saturday 27th May 1989

Was living in Oxford by now and this was a trip home to Warrington.

47654 Oxford to Birmingham NS
86254 Birmingham NS to Warrington BQ

This was an Eastbourne to Glasgow service. Weird.

You guys claim these moves aren't all that exciting, which compared to landing, say, a 40 on an unexpected turn is probably fair. I reckon if some of these journeys were doable today they'd be taken up happily.

I'd be well chuffed with an 87 on a West Midlands leap, they were mostly eliminated before I properly got into the haulage scene. By then it was mostly Pendolino in 2005, although wasn't there a couple of workings still for 87s in 2006? I have a memory of 87006 in DRS blue at Birmingham New Street, I want to say that was 2006 but am I mistaken?

I'm also failing to remember for sure when I had 87002 Euston to Milton Keynes, I think that was 2004 on an autumn evening but I honestly can't be sure.

87033 from Milton Keynes to Birmingham, I remember bits of that day. I was on a West Midlands Day Ranger, and had taken an 87 over to Coventry. I had hoped to race to a ticket machine and back on with it, after buying a Coventry to Milton Keynes ticket. Sadly, I failed to make it and had to get the Pendolino on the next run, but I did get 87033 back so it wasn't a completely wasted journey. So long ago that trip was that my Casio digital camera still worked, I remember plugging in the battery charger on the Pendolino to give the rechargeable batteries a boost.

And all this of course is not mentioning the nostalgia for a day of loco and HST bashing between Stockport and Manchester, way back in May 2004...Good few 87s and 90s that day, plenty of MML HSTs too!

I was a big fan of the 87s, certainly in my top 5 types of loco. I liked 81s to 85s for the relative rarity but 87s had something special about them. You'll see that in my moves as 1983 moves on.

Apologies if this in in the wrong thread - and it's certainly not relevant to today's date or to haulage - but I think it's of immense historical value 'back in the day(s)'.

I have in my possession the last train register book from Helensburgh Upper signalbox prior to its closure in June 1968. Under the provisions of the old Rule 55, guards or secondmen of trains detained on running lines (in this case usually awaiting a crossing with another train travelling in the opposite direction) were required to go to the box and sign the train register, giving their name, grade, reporting number or description of train and loco number. As this was the brief period when class 37s were first tried experimentally on WHL freights, it shows up a couple of interesting workings. Notice that there isn't a single class 27, as this was the period when the Rebuilt NBL-Paxman 29s reigned almost supreme in the West Highlands, but there is a rare appearance by a 26.

That's fascinating. I never appreciated how much class 20 work there was on the West Highland Line.

Yes, it's all relative. A couple of years ago I took a load of photos of an 86 on a railtour. In past times my camera might have stayed in my bag!

My empire for a time machine! The 29s are the main highlights for me there of course, but that's not to exclude the 20s, 26 & 37s.

As for your last bit, I'm probably the top enthusiast for the NBL Type 2s within my age bracket lol ;)

Just got home after driving back from Carnforth, having enjoyed said 37s thrashing their nuts off for much of the day. Much better this morning when we were at the front though. Also on the way back it seems the multi working was playing up. A good thrash though.
How on earth did people afford stuff like this without a pass or two?
In this instance it was work, so I had passes permitting me free (duty only) travel around the Eastern Region, and permitting me to travel in guard's vans. (In the absence of a guard's van, the loco cab was the next best thing).
For day-to-day bashing, before railway employment I used a variety of local rover or zonal tickets, and kept an eye open for Merrymaker trains, Holiday Preview specials, etc. I also learned a considerable amount about ticket collectors and their habits, from careful study of the species. Once employed by the railways the provision of a limited supply of free passes made life much easier - especially as most staff didn't grip free passes, so they could be endlessly recycled.

Anyway, back on topic:
Tuesday 28/05/85
86228 1115 Glasgow Central – Carstairs
37263 1302 Carstairs – Haymarket
47713 1333 Haymarket – Glasgow QS
Another Carstairs leap before work.

Thursday 28/05/87
86101 2138 Crewe – Preston
85021 2338 Preston – Crewe
85021 was my last required 85 for haulage. I didn’t have them all – I missed 85027 which suffered fire damage in 1983, but I was pleased to get 85021 at last as it had been eluding me for some time.

Saturday 28/05/94
69523 0910 Wembley Park – Uxbridge
12 “Sarah Siddons” 0957 Uxbridge – Wembley Park
“Steam on the Met”.

Tuesday 28/05/96
37429 0932 Crewe – Bangor
DMU 51224 + 51533 Bangor to Holyhead
43041 + 43019 1338 Holyhead – Euston

North Wales Coast! Simple day.

40104 Warrington BQ to Llandudno Junc 1D35, the second Bangor
To pick up The Bangor and stick with it for the rest of the day on the classic diagram
40158 Llandudno Junc to Man Vic, 1J30, 11.57 off Bangor
40158 Man Vic to Bangor, 1D21, 15.45 off Man Vic
40158 Bangor to Warrington BQ, 1J31, 19.25 off Bangor.

Saturday 28th May 1983

What a difference a year makes. As you will see tomorrow, the equivalent Saturday in 1982 had so many 40s. According to Motherlist, by 1983 there were only two out on passenger duty and for very limited diagrams.

86230 Warrington BQ to Crewe
85004 Crewe to Preston
87028 Preston to Crewe
85030 Crewe to Preston
85019 Preston to Lancaster
87006 Lancaster to Crewe
86216 Crewe to Nuneaton
31251 Nuneaton to Leicester
47072 Leicester to Nuneaton
31424 & 31423 Nuneaton to Leicester
47123 Leicester to Birmingham NS
47540 Birmingham NS to Crewe (via Cannock)
85018 Crewe to Warrington BQ

Good number of Roarers, couple of interesting duffs, scored a Goyle, back via Cannock but with less interesting traction than @CW2 had.

The sum total I still have of years of notes and photos is about a dozen pages of A4, thanks to my mum clearing the loft out a few years ago and not checking if I wanted anything keeping.

One thing I do have is the week commencing 27 May 1985 - I’m assuming it was half term week and it’ll have been in the run up to taking my O levels. I’ll have been forced to revise, but it looks like I was allowed out in the evenings as all five days I came back on the 20:57 Birmingham to Coventry, which ran through to Paddington.

27/5 31401 with load 8. Predictably pedestrian, 23:34 net of the International stop

28/5 47597 +8

29/5 50004 +6. Hellfire. 20:22 net, and ten minutes exactly International to Cov, my somewhat rudimentary timing had it averaging 102 between Tile Hill and Canley before the anchors were slammed on

30/5 47599 +8

31/5 47575 +7

The 20:57 was a bit of a disappointment by then, it had been a solid 50 in previous years but now more often than not turned out a rancid duff. The lowlight from my limited remaining notes is 25/7/85 when it was a 3 car DMU of some sort. But that was still 4 seconds quicker than the 31 had been

What was the setup on board? Masks, screens, etc?

I was thinking of going to Shipley for it on the return but thought that they might not be keen on ad-hoc cranks turning up with the current restrictions.

In previous years I've done it for a few runs up and down Airedale, scoring a few of the West Coast 37s. I thought that I'd had them all now, but then realised that 685 is part of their fleet. Hopefully later in the summer I'll get another chance.

The one time I've taken it to the seaside was the pair of 33s.

Some of the coaches have new internal screens, either wooden or perspex. Masks are compulsory except when eating or drinking. (Some people spent a lot of time eating and drinking). The buffet is operating but closed - you aren't able to walk along the train to the buffet counter, a trolley brings food and drink to your seat. Social distancing means a bay per group - or a bay of four to yourself if travelling alone. That's OK when the passenger loadings are light - as they are at the moment - but I expect those rules will change once the rules are relaxed (from a date to be announced but not before 21st June...). You are encouraged not to move about the train at all.
There were about 15 cranks in the second coach from the locos on the way out (second from rear on the return), nearly all of whom were pay on the day, myself included. (The front coach is a BCK for staff only). I didn't notice anybody trying to join at the intermediate stations on this trip, but I'd expect you'd be OK if you present yourself to the Train Manager and ask for a ticket.
I missed those 33s - last year I managed 37668 + 37706 York - Preston via Copy Pit, but every other time I went near a West Coast train I was stalked by 47s of various guises. As they've just taken delivery of a load more, I can only imagine this infestation will grow worse.

Following-on directly from the magical mystery tour to Morecambe, my parents and I set off on holiday to the Highlands for a two centre half-term holiday with our touring caravan. On Sunday 28th May we drove to the first site at Balmacara on Loch Alsh, a few miles East of Kyle. On arrival, after setting-up the caravan, we drove into Kyle to purchase supplies and class 24 no. 5113 was noted and photographed at the station. This was Inverness depot's first ever 'skinhead' disc-headcode 24 and had recently been transferred from Eastfield.

Thanks for the info - much appreciated.

28th May 1983 - a rubbish Summer Saturday:
46037 Sunderland - Newcastle 1N35
47409 Darlo - Newcastle 1N??

28th May 1988 - Saturday again:
86251 New St - Wolves 1J19
47650 Wolves - Shrewsbury 1J19
Presumably it was a pair of 37/4s forward as I rejected it to save a few quid and festered for...
37682 + 37683 Shrewsbury - Wolves 1A44
Pairs of Buxton 37/6s worked this diagram fairly regularly that summer, but I was only in the West Mids at the front and back ends of the season.
Only highlight for the rest of the day was 85003 Cov - Wolves on 1S87. Also had 86103, 86242, 86243, 47556, 86408.

28th May 1990
47547 Reading - Oxford
47820 Oxford - New St
Return work trip. IIRC I was in First Class (then our travel policy changed)

I just remembered that 37685 was one of the four 37s repainted into Inter City livery and dedicated to sleeper services in Scotland, when they ran around in pairs towing a Genny van. The other locos were 37505/510/683. I'd love to see it in Inter City livery again, rather than the dismal West Coast colours.

Nice! Triggering fond memories of 37203 that is, 17 years ago in October! Not to mention memories of 37670+401 to Weymouth all those Septembers back, and 406 on the diverted sleeper in February 2006 to Oban...

Crikey I've also just realised in October it's 15 years since The Sandblower tour with Pathfinder. That was a good 'un for variety fair play.

11 years this Mazey Day since I did my first (and last) Spitfire Railtours tour to Penzance with I believe 37218 and 37259. Which also reminds me of a 2008 South Devon Railway gala involving 47375...

Oh the memories that are flooding back today!

You mean like this:

I don't mind what colour they are if they keep thrashing past within earshot of my garden!

Just added first week of June moves from years gone by to Trainlogger. A couple of interesting days coming up.

That's right - and don't they look good on that stock too. I happened to be up there that weekend, on a steam bash. This is jumping a bit out of sequence, but to cut a long story short I had 37505+37510 on the northbound sleeper to Dundee on Saturday morning, 44871 Stirling to Inverness , then stayed the night in Inverness. Sunday morning it was 44871 again Inverness to Aviemore, a round trip to Boat of Garten, then 37431 back to Inverness. We knew that 37683 + 37685 had done the Inverness sleepers, so expected to have them back south from Inverness overnight. Fate intervened. There was an Inter City Land Cruise running that had arrived behind a pair of old banger 37s, but it was decided to pair up the Inter City liveried 37s with the matching Mk 1 stock - with the result in the photo you linked. We got 37170 + 37251 on the sleepers instead.

Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside.... Especially when most of the haulage is 40s...

Saturday 29th May 1982

47483 Warrington BQ to Rhyl on The Bangor. Boo.
40077 Rhyl to Warrington BQ, 1E86, 09.00 Llandudno to York
40027 Warrington BQ to Llandudno, 1M71, 09.00 York to Llandudno (very reliable 40 diagram)
40029 Llandudno to Colwyn Bay, 1E82, 13.53 Llandudno to York (another very reliable 40 diagram)
40183 Colwyn Bay to Flint, 1J22 (2nd Bangor diagram)
40079 Flint to Bangor, 1D57 (3rd Bangor diagram)
40079 Bangor to Man Vic, 1J39 (3rd Bangor diagram)
40126 Man Vic to Preston, 21.15 to Blackpool
86226 Preston to Warrington BQ

Apart from the first and last trains, a perfect day. And twelve months later wasn't too shabby.

Sunday 29th May 1983

40024 Warrington BQ to Llandudno, 1D35, 09.50 (edit) off Man Vic
40157 Llandudno to Shotton, 1J22, 14.40 to Man Vic
47214 (boo) Shotton to Llandudno, 1D40, 14.36 off Man Vic
40024 Llandudno to Warrington BQ, 1J40, 18.27 to Man Vic.

Unfortunately this wasn't a precursor to 1983 returning to 1982 levels of 40 moves but was a good day on its own merits.

Some very nice moves there.
As you will see, in 1983 alighting at Shotton for 47214 was actually a very good move ...
(I think you've misidentified the train 40024 was on in the morning).

Monday 29/05/78
47098 1720 York – Reading, via Cudworth, Beighton, Saltley, Solihull
A return ADEX, which gave me a cheap and easy way to visit my parents in Reading – and a required duff.

Thursday 29/05/80
40052 1630 Kings Cross – Peterborough
47032 1809 Peterborough – Kings Cross
The 1630 to Peterborough was a good bet for a 40 at this time. The usual return from Peterborough would be with a Deltic on the 1630 from Hull, but on this occasion a required 47 on a relief from Edinburgh arrived first.

Sunday 29/05/83
47401 0745 York – Manchester Victoria
40024 1000 Manchester Victoria – Llandudno (retimed from 0940)
40157 1440 Llandudno – Chester. Failed at Chester due to low coolant. Loco removed and sent to depot, where a class 47 was seen emerging …
DMU Chester – Llandudno
40024 1827 Llandudno – Chester
47472 2000 Chester – Crewe
86251 2043 Chester – Rugby
86318 2213 Rugby – Mossend (just to prove it didn’t always get a Roarer)

Thursday 29/05/84
45038 1400 Leeds – York
43156 + 43xxx 1547 York – Doncaster
DMU Doncaster – Thorne North
31291 1651 Thorne North – Sheffield
37225 18xx Sheffield – Leeds (Relief from Bristol TM)

Friday 29/05/87
40122 0800 Crewe – Newport
47479 1058 Newport – Crewe
87033 2332 Crewe – Carlisle

Monday 29/05/95
75014 1130 Amersham – Harrow on the Hill
9466 1725 Harrow on the Hill – Amersham
This was to be a “Harrowing” day in more than one way. More “Steam on the Met”. On this occasion I took the family, and we fitted in a trip to Wembley for the play-off final between Reading and Bolton Wanderers.
In the first half, Reading were 2-0 up and awarded a penalty. The story of “What happened next” and the rest of the match can be found here:
