The first 20 class 26s, being five tons heavier than their later sisters due to having different bogies, were RA6 as opposed to RA5 - and thus officially banned from the West Highland Lines. However, in emergency, this was sometimes ignored and I had occasionally seen them on freight trips at the Southern end of the line (Faslane or Glen Douglas), but this was the only time that I ever saw one - or was hauled by one - on the line. I needed it for haulage and was never hauled by it again.
My recollection is there was a derogation which permitted the RA6 class 26s to operate on RA5 routes - but I could be wrong!
I do recall seeing a class 26 on the Glen Douglas trip around 79/80 but could not say which variety although potentially a Haymarket cl26 might be more likely to land at Eastfield (for Cadder) or Motherwell (for Mossend) than one of the Inverness fleet.

After my trip to Carlisle via the S&C the previous day, I was taking the long way round to get back to York. (I think I might have used some sort of cheap tourist round trip ticket for this move). There was only one way home, and that was the Shrewsbury – York overnight:
86210 0011 Crewe – Stockport
There was a long wait at Stockport as the corresponding westbound train was late arriving. Eventually it turned up – and with a Deltic on the front as an unexpected bonus!
55014 0051 Stockport – Leeds via OA&GB Jn. 50’ late. We lost some time at Huddersfield making an unscheduled attachment there, bringing the load up to 14!
At Leeds the Deltic was detached – presumably required to work one of the morning services to Kings Cross – and I waited to see what we would get to work forward to York. Required 40195 came off Holbeck and shunted yet another additional van onto the front, bringing the train up to load 15, but “obviously” that wasn’t going to work forward to York in sub-zero temperatures in the middle of the night in January, as it is No Heat…
40195 0236 Leeds – York, 70’ late. An utter thrash, but I could hardly value it by leaning out of the window for fear of frostbite. I did have some further runs off 40195 later that year, on the North Wales Coast. Thankfully that was in the middle of the day in August, so heating wasn’t an issue then.

Sunday 04/01/81
Having arrived in Edinburgh behind 40058 I had time for breakfast and a shower before heading south once more, this time via the WCML:
47706 0803 Edinburgh – Carstairs
At Carstairs there was no electric loco waiting to take over, so the 47/7 was run round and reattached to the south end. We thought it was going to work through to Carlisle, but eventually an electric arrived (the 47/7 had simply been keeping the stock warm):
85029 0943 Carstairs – Carlisle
South of Carlisle the WCML had an engineering block on, so everything was going over the S&C. I got the gen, and planned my journey south:
40032 1243 Carlisle – Preston via S&C, Blackburn
This was a 1055 Glasgow Central – Euston relief train, a rake of 10 Mk 1s. 40032 seemed to be chucking out a lot of oil in its exhaust, as I found to my cost when I tried to take a photo as we passed over Ribblehead Viaduct. (Oil all over my camera lens, my glasses, my face …) I stuck with the train at Preston, going forward with a Roarer:
85014 1530 Preston – Crewe
86261 1653 Crewe – Stafford
85037 1731 Stafford – Birmingham New Street, 20’ late.
At New Street there was another novelty loco on hand (or at least a novelty on this route):
33007 1922 Birmingham New Street – Reading via Coventry.
This was a full load 12 -the largest load I’ve ever had for a single class 33 - so it’s no surprise that it lost time: 20 -> 45’ late.
For the final leg of the journey, there was yet more novelty:
31117 + 31121 2212 Reading – Paddington.
Whereas the 33 had been on load 12, this pair of 31s was only on load 7, and regained a couple of minutes lateness to arrive back in Paddington on time.
I needed all three of 33007, 31117 and 31121 for haulage, and these were the only runs I ever recorded off these three locos.

Returning from Italy on the Roma-Paris overnight in couchettes. Unfortunately, the sleepers were fully-booked when we decided at short notice to travel overnight, as our friend in Paris was unavailable. Not the best night's sleep that we've ever had....and I was unable to find out what had hauled us in Italy:

Sounds like a last minute substitution for a failed or otherwise unavailable 37....good old 5402!
I was thinking the same - quite rare to get a 27 on the WHL by 1984.

While I'm at it, here's my moves for the 5th:

Thursday 05/01/84
After an early shift, it’s time to head for Poland via Harwich:
43073 + 43058 1345 Leeds – Kings Cross
37049 1650 Liverpool Street – Manningtree
A pause for evening refreshments in Manningtree station buffet, then
51261 + 56125 Manningtree – Harwich Parkeston Quay
… and off to the Continent.

Sunday 05/01/86
On my way home from a Polish bash, I managed to avoid the usual 47/4 at Harwich:
31418 1800 Harwich Parkeston Quay – Liverpool Street
I had to head home to Scotland, but I could go part way with Roarers:
85003 2020 Euston – Crewe
85007 2313 Crewe – Preston
(Monday 06/01/86)
87013 0032 Preston – Carlisle
47490 0425 Carlisle – Glasgow Central via Dumfries

It was the 2130 Coventry - Preston I had it on, I was just going to wait for the Euston - Glasgow at Crewe, but when the Roarer came in it would have been silly to ignore it.

Last of the big spenders…

A quick trip from Exeter to Feniton behind 33101 after work on this day for a unit back.
I think that might have been the last time I had a 33 on the main line.

Not the greatest of trips, haulage-wise...

47654 Dunston - Carlisle 2M33
86236 Carlisle - Penrith 1Z??
86103 Penrith - Carlisle 1S47
86406 Carlisle - Penrith 1M34
86258 Penrith - Carlisle 1S??
47407 Carlisle - Dunston 2E40

At least Duffs across the Tyne Valley are better than units.

An early afternoon meeting in Mossend:
43148 + 43012 0730 Reading – Paddington
87028 0835 Euston – Motherwell

Then after the meeting, I could either rush home up the WCML on a daytime train, or take the long slow comfortable overnight version:
303 014 Bellshill – Glasgow Central Low Level
156 442 1650 (?) Glasgow Queen Street – Rannoch
37413 2107 Rannoch – Edinburgh via Westerton, Cowlairs curve, Falkirk High
As it happened, the fester at Edinburgh was going to be a long one …

Shouldn't that say 'half a day at 6th Form'?!
