On my way home from college, exceptionally there was a Deltic waiting to work the 1620 Harrogate – Kings Cross. It was usually a 47/4 or a 31/4, but it did produce a Deltic on occasion. It was enough to persuade me to divert home via Leeds instead of taking the direct DMU to York.
55010 1620 Harrogate – Leeds
46036 1707 Leeds – York

Monday 26/10/81
An after-work leap on the Cambridge road:
31147 1735 Liverpool St – Audley End
37107 1902 Audley End – Cambridge
37107 2000 Cambridge – Liverpool Street

Friday 26/10/84
A required WR boilered 37 out on the G&SW, with a boilered 25 coming the other way:
37176 1545 Glasgow Central – Annan
25060 1759 Annan – Glasgow Central

Tuesday 26/10/93
I don’t normally include my commuting moves, but this one was (thankfully) an exception:
47847 0805 Reading – Paddington
43185 + 43041 1715 Paddington – Reading
As we passed Twyford, the parking brake applied on 43185, and we ground to a firm standstill, blocking the Down Main. It took the arrival of a team from Old Oak Common by van to sort out the problem, with us arriving in Reading at 2021, some 155 minutes late. It’s fair to say that the evening peak was an utter mess.

26th October 1981

An historic day. The very first entry in my Moves Book. I purchased one of those 'Three Return Trips' tickets, basically to go spotting at locations other than Newcastle. First destination was Edinburgh. Fortunately I figured out that I could travel behind a Deltic on the morning stopper, so my first recorded haulage was:

55013 Newcastle - Waverley 1S14

I then spent several hours on the platform. Goodness knows how many McRats I could have had if I'd thought about it. Then a Tram back home. So I wasn't yet a basher, but I'd taken a first tentative step.

26th October 1982

45105 Newcastle - York 1O19
47553 York - Darlington 1E79
45101 Darlington - York 1M75
47519 York - Durham 1E55
45110 Durham - Darlington 1V97
45120 Darlington - Durham 1E74
45112 Durham - Newcastle 1N31

Hmmm.

26th October 1991

47810 New St - Bristol TM

Bristol City 1 Newcastle 1

47809 Bristol TM - New St

Edit: Almost forgot...

26th October 2021

After a meeting in Leeds today I found myself back at the station by four o'clock. A quick check of RTT showed that Trans-Pennine Express had turned out two required Cats. It would be rude not to:

68021 Leeds - Garforth 1E41
68026 Garforth - Leeds 1F72

Saturday 27th October 1962

A 1960s day out to Edinburgh with a couple of friends.

D273 09:18 Newcastle-Edinburgh (06:55 York-Edinburgh)

At Newcastle D2045 and J72 69023 were on station pilot duty, and V3 67656 was on an empty stock working. We left on time and passed A4 60016 Silver King near Heaton. I had seen the A4 the previous evening on a Portobello(Sunderland)-York freight, so it had probably just arrived back from York. Also seen at Heaton were A1 60143 Sir Walter Scott, and a very new Peak D179.

At Alnmouth a J39 64924 was observed, with another 64814 noted at Tweedmouth. The entire class of J39s would be gone through mass withdrawals within a month. At the Berwick stop Deltic D9012 Crepello went slowly by on the up Flying Scotsman. As we neared Edinburgh a couple of North British J37s were noted and V2 60927. Passing St Margaret’s depot A3 60060 The Tetrarch was observed on shed.

Arrival at Waverley was on time. D5309 was in the station on an arrival from Carlisle, plus a couple of B1s and a Standard 2-6-4T 80003 on empty stock.

It was now time to find our way to Haymarket and St Margarets sheds, which we did by using a shed directory book, bus, and a little help from the public. The plan was to bunk both sheds, but at Haymarket we asked for permission at the office, and were allowed to go round.

The only A4 at Haymarket was Gateshead’s 60018 Sparrow Hawk. Most of the Scottish allocated A4s had been transferred to St Rollox and Ferryhill to work the Glasgow-Aberdeen three hour expresses. In fact steam was sparse on shed, in addition to 60018 there were only two A1s, 60152 Holyrood, and 60162 Saint Johnstoun, five B1s and J36 65243 Maude. Also Deltics D9000/D9010/D9013, nine EE Type 4s and seven BRCW Sulzer Type 2s (later Class 26).

At St Margaret’s there was 57 steam and 8 diesel shunters. The pick of the bunch were A1 60161 North British, A2s 60534/60537, A3s 60060/60087, six V2s, ten B1s, J36 55224 Mons and J35 64510. To see three classes of North British 0-6-0 on shed (J35, J36, J37) was an unexpected bonus.

Arrived back at Waverley around mid afternoon, and spotted A3 60073 St Gatien at the head of a stopper to Berwick. We asked the crew if we could cab the A3, and were allowed up for 10 minutes of warmth on a very cold day. I can vaguely recall that we debated travelling south to Berwick behind 60073, but being young teenagers we probably lacked the confidence to change our travel plans.

After 60073 departed we had about a 90 minute wait for our train back to Newcastle (The North Briton). During that time I recorded A3 60051 Blink Bonny passing through light engine, Deltic D9001 St Paddy arriving on the down Flying Scotsman, five Type 4s, and BR Standards 80054/80122 on empty stock workings. The North Briton arrived on time behind D345.

D345 17:08 Edinburgh-Newcastle (16:00 Glasgow-Leeds)

Observed A3 60071 Tranquil at Berwick, and Hawick allocated Standard 2-6-0 78048 was in the station on a St Boswells train. 78048 would follow us down the mainline to Tweedmouth, then run round its train and take the branch to St Boswells (situated on the Waverley route). This service was withdrawn eighteen months later.

As we passed Tweedmouth I noted A3 60088 Book Law on shed. The run from Berwick to Newcastle was in darkness, and my last notebook entries for the day were V3 67691 on empty stock and Peak D170 at Newcastle station.

Fill in the gaps and re-order the moves as you see fit, this is my best guess...

40027 Blackpool N to Preston (on a Man Vic service)
31407 Lime St to St Helens J
45120 St Helens J to Lime St
85040 Wigan NW to WBQ

Wagon and Roarer were required.

Saturday 27th October 1979

Just the one move from what would have been some sort of spotting trip (see tomorrow too).

87014 Lime St to Runcorn

Thanks @Harvester for sharing that - it's a wonderful glimpse of times past.
Meanwhile, here's my contribution for today:

Friday 27/10/78
47458 1620 Harrogate – Leeds
46036 1707 Leeds – York
45062 1733 York – Leeds
DMU Leeds – York

Tuesday 27/10/81
37084 1435 Liverpool St – Kings Lynn
37084 1730 Kings Lynn – Liverpool Street
I was travelling with a mate who – like me – had a soft spot for all English Electric diesels, and also Roarers. Recently the 2055 Euston – Stranraer had been producing class 81s so it was possible to do a high mileage round trip to Carlisle overnight. I didn’t take much persuading …
81009 2055 Euston – Carlisle
There was 20 minutes delay at Preston whilst fitters attended to change the exhauster fuse. There was quite a performance with the pantograph going up and down, large bangs coming from the class 81 equipment room, and a general air of chaos and confusion. We soon got going again though.

Saturday 27/10/84
I was working early shift, finishing at 3pm, so it was a quick stroll to Glasgow Central to head to Carstairs to intercept my target for the day:
86221 1520 Glasgow Central – Carstairs
40047 1604 Carstairs – Edinburgh
I had hoped the 40 would work again on the 1810 to Carstairs, but somebody had other ideas, and provided me with a required 47/3 instead:
47303 1810 Edinburgh – Carstairs
86214 1855 Carstairs – Lockerbie
81019 2113 Lockerbie – Mossend
26040 23xx Mossend – Perth
I travelled on the beloved 1S81 Carlisle – Perth Postal, which unexpectedly produced a class 26 from Mossend. At Perth it was just a question of waiting from the portions from Edinburgh and Glasgow to arrive ready to go forward at 0400 to Inverness …

Sunday 27/10/85
Glasgow Queen Street was closed, with all trains diverted into Glasgow Central, including the through HSTs to Kings Cross:
43092 + 43077 1730 Glasgow Central – Edinburgh via Rutherglen, Whifflet North Jn, Greenhill Lower Jn, Falkirk Grahamston
47708 2000 Edinburgh – Glasgow Central via Shotts

Monday 27/10/86
After a couple of weeks bashing steam locos around northern Poland, it was time to come home. I left Poland on the Moskva – Paris overnight, which I took as far as Berlin Zoo, then flew back from Berlin to Heathrow via Frankfurt with Pan Am. The leg from Frankfurt to Heathrow was flight PA0001, and was my first – and so far only – flight in a 747.
After taking the Underground from Heathrow to central London, it was time to head back home in style:
87020 1345 Euston – Glasgow Central

After solid ETH Peaks and Duffs the previous day I headed west...

47203 Newcastle - Carlisle 1M04
26043 Carlisle - Annan 1S37
47491 Annan - Carlisle 1M06
47203 Carlisle - Alnmouth 1S15
47455 Alnmouth - Newcastle 1E21

Nice bit of Type 2 action. Pity about the rest of the day.

27th October 1984

45137 Newcastle - Durham 1M76
45136 Durham - Newcastle 1E08

27th October 1991

Sunday drags. What big Type 5s will Saltley turn out today...

47566 (+87010) New St - Wolves
47825 (+87021) Wolves - New St

Should have stayed in bed!

SATURDAY 27th OCTOBER 1973:

A day out on an LNER Society Special to Steamtown Carnforth, as it was then, formed of one of the spare Liverpool/Manchester Pullman sets which weren't normally used on a Saturday. We were staying over the weekend with friends near St Albans and my father drove me to Watford Junction on a frosty and foggy morning:

E3142 Watford Junction-Crewe
430 Crewe-Carnforth

After a tour of the Steamtown depot museum, the short trip to Lancaster and back was undertaken for a wee bit of spotting:

402 Carnforth-Lancaster
M50963/56236 Lancaster-Carnforth
430 Carnforth-Crewe
E3074 Crewe-Watford Junction

Nice to get a roarer on the return trip!

As expected, 81009 was turned straight around at Carlisle off the Down Stranraer onto the Up Stranraer, giving me the satisfaction of 299 miles of Roarer mileage each way:
81009 0238 Carlisle – Euston
… and thanks to some event at Birmingham International, there were reliefs running from Euston, so I dropped straight onto another class 81:
81004 0825 Euston – Birmingham International
… then back to London the scenic route:
86320 1008 Birmingham International – Coventry
50039 1029 Coventry – Paddington
… then in the evening a little trip to Cambridge …
37089 1735 Liverpool Street – Cambridge
31207 2000 Cambridge – Liverpool Street

Sunday 28/10/84
I had arrived at Perth on the 2050 from Carlisle with 26040, and settled down for the long fester as the portions from Edinburgh and Glasgow arrived, were shunted together, then formed the 0400 departure to Inverness. This was normally a solid class 47 diagram, but following a mix up at Edinburgh the Edinburgh portion arrived behind 27010. The 27 was detached, and replaced by 26038, then 26041 was added, and the locos multied up. This was the first pair of 26s over the Highland Main Line for over 3 months:
26041 + 26038 0400 Perth – Inverness
At Inverness there was only one sensible move on a Sunday morning, the Lairg papers:
37264 0820 Inverness – Lairg
37264 1057 Lairg – Inverness
There was a choice of southbound services from Inverness, but the 1700 to Edinburgh had the added attraction of 27001 as a pilot loco:
27001 1700 Inverness – Perth, piloting
47120 1700 Inverness – Kirkcaldy
In fact the driver on the 47 let the 27 do most of the work to Perth, so we lost time quite steadily.
47219 2116 Kirkcaldy – Edinburgh
47461 2340 Edinburgh – Carstairs
… and so another overnight begins …

Friday 28th October 1983; Another Peak on this train, or rather, the same one

45148 1307 Paddington-Liverpool (Reading-Oxford)
I don't think I've ever seen a Peak at Paddington, let alone had one for haulage out of there. Quite a novelty (on successive days!).

"Saltley Seagulls" in action again!

Meanwhile, even futher back in history:

SATURDAY 28th OCTOBER 1978:

A Southern Region 'Pleasure-seeker' ADEX to Blackpool North for the illuminations, returning overnight and with an interesting route:

06 22 Waterloo-Portsmouth Harbour: 7058/7384 Petersfield-Portsmouth Harbour
09 02 Portsmouth Harbour-Blackpool North: 33 001 Portsmouth Harbour-Brent Junction via Guildford, Chertsey and Kew East Junction
47 100 Brent Junction-Blackpool North via Kettering, Hinckley, Nuneaton and Tamworth
23 59 Blackpool North-Portsmouth Harbour: 47 100 Blackpool North-Preston

(to be continued tomorrow)

Consist on outward journey: S21275/13405/13402/13389/25920/25916/25924/25906/25934/(21268) Load 10 (9) AB/EH

Unfortunately, on arrival of the empty stock at Portsmouth Harbour, the country end BCK, no. S21268, had to be detached when it was discovered to have been dragged all the way from Clapham Yard with the handbrake on....resulting in white hot tyres and mega wheel flats. (Not the first or last time that this happened - guards not preparing their trains properly before departure!). As a result, we went to Blackpool one carriage short and several passengers had to stand or sit on the brake van floor, by which they were understandably not amused. For the return journey, an LMR Mark 2e TSO was found, which made an unusual sight tagged onto the end of a train of Southern Region Mark 1/early Mark 2 stock:

Consist on return journey: S25934/25906/25924/25916/25920/13389/13402/13405/21275/M5751 Load 10 AB/EH

The second of my "three return trips" saw me take a unit to Carlisle for a day's spotting. Fortunately I did not return on a unit:

40057 Carlisle - Newcastle 1S15

So after a Deltic being the first loco in my moves book, a 40 was the second. Not a bad start.

28th October 1982

A year later, on my Northumbrian Ranger, and I was back at Carlisle:

47108 Newcastle - Carlisle 1M04
47108 Carlisle - Newcastle 1S15
47520 Newcastle - Durham 1M79
45117 Durham - Newcastle 1E74
47556 Morpeth - Newcastle 1E21

No Type 2 to Annan today.

28th October 1989

90026 New St - Wolves
87003 Wolves - New St
85004 New St - Wolves
90033 Wolves - Coventry
87035 Coventry - New St

A Roarer and no Cans - not too bad for a day on the travelcard.

28th October 1990

A year later, and it was a slightly different story...

86241 New St - Wolves
86257 Wolves - New St
86204 New St - Wolves
86253 Wolves - New St
86224 New St - Wolves

Desperate!

It happened occasionally, there were a couple of instances earlier in the Summer of 83. IIRC it was part of a triangular diagram, Birmingham-Cardiff-Paddington-Birmingham.

I began spotting in 1976 but I always recorded haulage, normally with a P in my spotting book and then adding P to my Combined. P was for Pulled By. I would count 29th October 1981 as being the first day I went out deliberately to get a particular kind of loco for haulage, although I didn't properly start bashing until 1982. Anyway, here are the moves (the gaps would have been ETH duffs).

46056 Lime St to St Helens J
45139 Lime St to St Helens J

And then the reason I was here...

55002 St Helens J to Lime St
55002 Lime St to St Helens J

Friday 29th October 1982

A few gaps as usual...

87005 Preston to Crewe
87014 Crewe to Preston
87009 Preston to Lancaster
87008 Lancaster to Preston
40012 Wigan NW to St Helens J, 13.23 Glasgow to Liverpool
40035 Newton-le-Willows to Abergele & Pensarn, 1D65 17.45 Man Vic to Llandudno J
45143 Abergele & Pensarn to WBQ, 1J31 19.25 Bangor to Man Vic "The Bangor"

Saturday 29th October 1988

Flying visit "home" to see my newly-born niece...

47471 Oxford to Coventry, 1M?? 06.00 Padd to Lime St
86252 Coventry to Birmingham NS, 1M?? 06.00 Padd to Lime St
87014 Birmingham NS to WBQ, 1S?? 10.13 Birmingham to Glasgow

So we both managed to get ourselves organised in time to sample Deltic haulage on the main line. Although I have to confess that I still require KOYLI.

Returning South overnight from Blackpool on a Southern Region 'Pleasure-Seeker' ADEX:

47 100 23 59 Blackpool North-Preston
87 028 Preston-Willesden via Bescot and Northampton
33 001 Willesden-Petersfield via Kew East Junction, Clapham Junction (run-round) and East Putney

The air brake only class 87 must have made an unusual sight hauling a train of Southern Region Mark 1/early Mark 2 stock - with an LMR Mark 2e air con TSO tagged on to the rear - on the WCML. At the time, all LMR Mark 1 stock, with the exception of Inter-City BGs and catering vehicles, were vacuum-braked.

Four years earlier, a friend and I had travelled on a similar excursion from Petersfield to Blackpool - hauled throughout in both directions by 47 484 "Isambard Kingdom Brunel" - which travelled outwards via Reading, Coventry and Bescot, but had the most convoluted return route due to engineering works, which involved travelling over what is now the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. IIRC, we set-off from Blackpool North at about midnight and travelled via Wigan, Bolton, Manchester Victoria, Denton Junction, Stockport, Stoke, Norton Bridge, Bescot, Proof House Junction, Birmingham New Street, Galton Junction, Stourbridge Junction, Worcester Shrub Hill, Honeybourne, Cheltenham Lansdown Junction, Stroud, Swindon, Reading and Guildford. The journey took at least nine hours with several changes of crew en route. I would love to be able to find my notebook for that period!

Wow, what an epic route! Those tours in the 70s and 80s were really good value for money. This was before the first "Baker" maps were produced, so most of us only had the passenger network map produced with the timetables, so that certainly added to the element of "mystery" on such tours. I remember doing one north from Reading when I was about 12 or 13, and being completely baffled when we arrived at Coventry, as the Leamington - Coventry line didn't feature on my map! Then we headed off around bits of the West Midlands I'd never heard of ...

29th October 1982

After two consecutive days going to Carlisle, then today's plan was to head down to York. I quickly changed my plan...

40057 Newcastle - Carlisle 1M04
08844 Stock Shunt 5M04/5S15
40057 Carlisle - Newcastle 1S15
47581 Newcastle - Durham 1M79
45113 Durham - Newcastle 1N31

So a year and a day after 40057 worked M04/S15, 40057 worked M04/S15.

29th October 1988

47584 New St - Coventry 1O12
86409 Cov - New St 1G34

I have no idea what I did in Coventry.

An interesting coincidence getting two "big" Stratford Duffs exactly six years apart.
