My original plan had been to do the sleepers through to Aviemore for the HST south, but the fire-related 95 minute delay at Newcastle had put paid to that, so I abandoned the train at Perth. It was a good job too, as it turned out. 67007 subsequently failed near Kincraig, and stopped the job completely for 3 – 4 hours until a class 37 arrived all the way from Mossend to rescue it! Nevertheless I had managed the unusual feat of having haulage from four different 67s on the same train (67026 Euston - Wembley, 67023 + 67027 Wembley - Peterborough, and 67007 Edinburgh - Perth).
After that, it was all dross:

390 045 1015 Haymarket – Birmingham International via Bushbury, Bescot, Perry Barr, Soho.

WEDNESDAY 9th APRIL 1986:

A circular day trip from Rome to cover the spectacularly scenic "Transsiberiana Italiana" line through the Southern Appennines from Carpinone, via Castel di Sangro and Roccararso to Sulmona, passing through the second highest standard gauge station in Italy. This line is now closed to normal traffic, but sees regular excursions hauled by a preserved early series class D445 loco with historic rolling stock from the 1930s-1950s.

My first and only trip over the Serqueux-Dieppe Ville line - the original Paris-Dieppe main line - on a Sunday diversion. By this time - although still double track - it was very rough and was restricted to 50 km/h (31 mph). It was still short-length bull head rail on rotting wooden sleepers and was closed soon afterwards. I believe it's now a walking and cycling track.

So today I used one of my "free" days on the KWVR. Haulage from Standard 4 75078 and non-standard Gronk D0226.

Taff Vale 85 also put in an appearance, having a test run double heading with the 4, but I stuck with the diesel.

Between trains I had time for a pint in the Old Parcels Office at Keighley. Landlord and Saltaire Blonde on the hand pumps; I chose the former. Plenty in there not observing a Good Friday fast and tucking in to their lunch.

All that, plus glorious sunshine. I thought it was meant to rain on Bank Holidays?
