Azuma seating

Many including myself remove them and stick them up on the overhead rack. They're a waste of time.

Agreed. I also remove the headrest immediately and velcro it back into place when I vacate the seat. I didn't realise they were so easy to remove and had one continually sliding down onto my shoulder from King's Cross to York last year.

I do find the first class IET seating comfortable from a personal perspective. Particularly when I'm working on my laptop, it reminds me a bit of my office chair...

I note that LNER have been sending email surveys to help guide choices of seating for their fleet this week - does this mean they’re finally addressing the dismal azuma seating or is it just for the CAF order…anyone know?

I would imagine that it will for the new CAF stock. It would cost a fortune to replace all the seating in the existing Azuma fleet.

Shame but I expect you’re right. Although the standard class azuma seating cant last much longer without at least replacing the foam pads - most are worn flat by now

The current first class headrests have (or should of) now been removed from all
Azuma Sets. Following customer and staff feedback, a new design is being installed later this year, but due to how many get removed each day by customers, the company have decided to remove them all with immediate effect.
If any are still on trains, customers and staff are allowed to remove and keep them, and if people would like, the company are asking (not compulsory) a £5 donation to CALM charity.

The one asking about opinions between leather seat coverings or so modern bio material?

-----

As for 1st class, agreed about those leather 'cushions' being horrible, when I did first class from Inverness I managed to get one of the older style soft cushions which allows a head to be rested in comfort. Leather is one of those materials which people say is luxurious but in my mind it's crap

It is indeed a commuter seat design. Specced by the DfT to save a few pennies. Hitachi folk were horrified and attempted to have the seats they'd originally specced included by DfT was having none of it.
Ridiculous. We shouldnt skrimp on seating that is going to be in use for decades, there is no need for it.

I rode on an Azuma to attend a funeral earlier this year, the woodens pews at the crematorium was marginally less comfortable than the Azuma.

I agree they could be better, but I have never had a problem with the Azuma seating.

Some have much more than others
The IET seats are truly awful. I'm average height, slightly overweight. Last but one lengthy GWR journey on a farily empty set, couldnt get comfortable in at least 4 seats that I tried. To the point where I would say I was in actual pain. The metal bar thing is also really noticeable now. In the end I sat in 1st class and was quite prepared to explain why to the guard if ticket was checked. (It wasnt). I'm well aware I shouldn't have (not something I'm in the habit of) and also well aware that it has nothing to do with the poor rail staff, but I was that desperate. Whoever signed off that spec should be sacked.

I strongly suspect that it was someone at the DfT....so you'll have great difficulty in identifying the individual concerned. :'(
Sadly I think you are right. Perhaps the department concerned, rather than being sacked, should be relocated to Bristol or York and forced to hold all their departmental meetings in person (or on the train)

We all know how useless the DfT are when they are allowed to get involved in anything whether it be train specifications or industrial relations. No surprises there.

I’ve heard (can someone confirm?) that Hitachi originally specced a much more comfortable seat, and warned the DfT that its penny pinching changes to Fainsa Sophia would not be popular.

Something needs to be done on this, as I've also frequently had to move seats 5 or 6 times in an attempt to find one where the metal bar isn't digging into me. Even with the best padded seats one can still feel the metal bar. For sure a new seat needs bringing in within the next couple of years in my view.

Yup. That's what someone who worked at Hitachi told me. Hitachi specified some other seats, DfT insisted on cheap tat.

I rode an LNER Azuma for the first time last year after not being in the UK since 2018. I was a frequent user of the ECML for many years living in Scotland and having in-laws who live in Southwell, Notts. I couldn't believe how uncomfortable they were for any journey over an hour, far too upright and firm. The ride of the train didn't impress me either, very jittery and with plenty of lateral sway. Definitely a downgrade from the 225/ Mk4 trains.

Surely the whole point of signing something off is taking responsibility for a choice or decision. OK, getting access to that name from outside might be difficult / impossible - but internally people higher up the chain of responsibility will know and thus share responsibility. I assume that legal responsibility is seamless across a change of government….

From the DfT POV they did well, got the cheapest possible seats and saved a few pennies in leasing costs.

Not if they’re having to replace them all several years earlier than might otherwise have been the case.

Still a success story for the person who originally made the saving. Long-term planning and taking accountability now seem to be completely absent from anything to do with politics.

Anyone have a photo of how the first class seats look now please? I.e. have they also removed the Velcro slide mechanism or just the cushion?

I found those less of an issue than I thought they would be, though they did have a tendency to fall down to the back of my shoulders and needed pushing back up. I think the original design as found on GWR (a softer cushion) is much better, or just put an antimacassar on.

The TfW base cushion seems to entirely lack the metal bar (it seems not to be there at all however hard you press down on it where it would be expected to be) and as a result I find those comfortable enough. In the first days of the 197 I spent a good couple of hours sat on one while the unit got itself stuck on the Conwy Valley with no discomfort. Thus just replacing the base with the TfW spec one would seem a cheap enough fix. The frame is quite upright, but I don't find the shape of it a massive problem.

It’s more the fact that people were pulling them off and chucking them on floor or in over head racks.

Just the cushion removed. New chains coming soon, so the slide mechanism remains.

Are they being replaced though? I get why punters want them to be, but I've seen no suggestion that they will be.

If LNER seats are getting replaced, then it’s news to LNER staff.
