Aztec code and ticket barriers

Am I just being unlucky or do ticket barriers just not get on well with Aztec codes (the ones you scan at the readers, mainly found on the paper tickets).

At Leeds 'Reject passback' seems to appear as soon as you've scanned any part of your ticket just once, even if a return or involving a connection

Trying an open return today, scanning the return portion to allow me to resume the journey just displayed 'Ticket expired' so it is obviously just basing the read on the date of the outward portion!

Given up now and just show any paper tickets to the gateline staff!

East Coast self-print tickets used to carry the following message in a footer box:

This Self-Print ticket can be read by the automatic gates at Virgin Trains East Coast stations with the exception of Leeds. Please show this ticket to the staff at gates on entry and exit to the platform.

Unless the technology employed has since been updated at Leeds, perhaps that's still the reason for the rejections.

To be fair the Leeds barrier staff generally seem to have a 'no questions asked' policy, but I can think of other stations on the Northern network where an open return showing 'Expired' despite still being perfectly valid may cause issues!

It's not just Leeds where the barriers don't okay nice with these. The Northern barriers at Wigan Wallgate will let you in using an Aztec code but flatly refused to let you out of the station. Which is fine, as long as the gate line is manned... but that's another issue...

I have an ongoing issue at Cardiff Central where if I activate my m-ticket just before going through the barriers, they choke on the Aztec code. Considering how little room there is for hanging around the concourse, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing differently.

They've recently improved it to recognise break of journey on the way out of stations, but not taught it to let you back in again when you want to resume.

It does feel a little like we've actually managed to go backwards from magnetic strips. At least those mostly worked, until they didn't. Unlike Paris metro tickets, which mostly don't work at all.
