Hi,

I was just wondering what people’s thoughts are on this delay repay claim I made and whether it is worth pursuing.

I was travelling from Euston to Salford Crescent via Manchester Piccadilly, with the Euston train running about 40 minutes late. as a result of this, I missed my booked connection at 2002 and instead had to get the 2102, arriving on time at Salford Crescent.

Avanti suggest the claim is only for 39-59 minutes, however I think this is clearly a case of a 60 minute delay.

Please see the attached from RTT showing the timetable and actual for both. What do people think, who is right?

Thanks a lot in advance.

What time did your Avanti service actually arrive into Manchester Piccadilly?

There is a chance that Avanti assumed that you could get the 2033 Blackpool North, arriving in Salford Crescent at 2043.

It really depends on how accurate the train running data is for the arrival time of the later train at Salford Crescent. RTT suggests it arrived at 21:11:30 (to the nearest quarter of a minute), which would mean that your delay was indeed 30-59 mins because the advertised arrival time of your booked train was 20:12. Given that RTT shows the train as departing at 21:12:15, and given how slow 331s are at station work, I would be surprised if it hadn't arrived before 21:12.

I agree that Avanti are being stingy here for denying you half of the compensation you'd get, for the sake of 30 seconds. But at the end of the day there has to be a threshold somewhere; the only way they could avoid this is if they applied a lower threshold of 58 or 59 mins in practice, which they obviously haven't done.

Sorry forgot to say - it arrived I believe at 1944, had no chance to catch the earlier one.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts so fae

If it arrived at 1944 there would be plenty of time to catch the 2002.

My mistake, again! That was the scheduled arrival, it arrived 2040 according to online review on On Time Trains. 56L.

General point on the Avanti Delay repay website.

There is no space for free text. I made a claim for a delay on the Avanti part of a longer journey. They asked me for details of the other parts of the journey but it is not obvious on the website where I can provide this information. There is no telephone contact point . All you can do is upload tickets (which they already had for the whole journey) . I even tried to upload a written explanation as a 'ticket' but that didn't seem to be accepted. Has anybody else had this problem?

If you were delayed on an Avanti service while on a longer journey, you should be claiming for the whole journey and providing all details of that when you claim.

Yeah eventually if they don't play ball you just have to contact customer services by phone or email. I've always had success emailing them when I've had a claim rejected from the online delay repay site.

It shouldn't really be on customers to have to do this, but it is what it is.
