Hi all,

Could anyone tell me whether the Holyhead - Cardiff and Manchester Piccadilly - Milford Haven/Carmarthen services are 175s, 158s or a mixture of both. If both, does anyone know which are 175s and which are 158s?

Thanks.

Most if not all of the Manchester ATW services are 175 operated as a general rule.

Cardiff - Holyheads are a mixture.

All West Wales to Manchesters diagrammed 175s Mondays to Fridays, but 1 X158 Sats and Suns. Holyhead to Cardiffs include a 158 diagram

ATW are down 2 175's the Whitland crash unit and a set that is used for the lightly loaded paid for by Welsh Government Second WAG Express. I see 158's on CDF to Holyhead diagrams nearly every time I travel. 150's even pop up on them from time to time.

Note you say lightly loaded WAG Express. The 158 Holyhead to Cardiff 158 Diagram is vice this 175 with a 150 vice the 158 on Maesteg to Cheltenhams.
Any other 175 shortages would be covered ad hoc day by day so obviously on paper there is a 175 short

In the last couple of months I've seen a couple of 158s on the way into Manchester from Camarthen/Milford Haven but otherwise it's always 175 operated

Most of the Marches diagrams on here: http://www.opentraintimes.com/schedule/C36164/2012/2/13
seem to be "DMU timed at 100mph" ie 175s,
but the 0515 Chester-Maesteg is a 90mph service, ie 158 (then does the Cheltenham shuttle).
There are probably others, and there seem to be more 158s on Sundays.

having a schedule is one thing but the reality is that ATW have little leeway and other slower units step up on a regular basis.

158s are mainly used on Holyhead-Birmingham's, on all Cambrian services and some Maesteg services. About 90% of Cardiff services are booked for 175s.

Must be short of hippos today, 150260, 150281 and 158832 all out on Cardiff-Manchesters and 150251 allocated to the 1510 Milford Haven-Manchester...

Really? Wow, for two Sprinters to appear they must be short! Clearly the temporary loss of 175002 has taken its toll today!!

05 15 Chester to Maesteg and 20 17 Cardiff to Manchester are diagrammed 158s which is the means of moving 158s between North and South of ATW. In between, work Maesteg/Cleltenhams. 06 28 Holyhead to Cardiff and 13 21 Cardiff to Holyhead are 158 at the momnent vice WAG 175. 21 55 Cardiff to Crewe and 23 08 shrewsbury to Cardiff diagrammed 150. Everything else is diagrammed 175 but, of course, whether you always see one on the day can be another matter. You don't cancel a train if the diagrammed class is not available on any day. That is the answer to the queries here as I have already pointed out.

Not sure if is still the case now, but back in October last year (Around the 20th October) Class 158's where doing the Manchester - Holyhead runs as that is what I had to change on to having travelled up from London Euston on a Voyager that morning to Chester before travelling on to Prestatyn.

Yep I was (un)lucky to cop for 150260 on 1V75 & 150251 on 1W33 that day (150251 took off 150260 at Cardiff due to the latter being 50 mins late due to problems around Ludlow)

Unless it was 150281 that did 1V79 because there was definately another 150 on that route too!!!!!!

Friday (10th) there was also a 150 on 1V57 (Holyhead-Cardiff) (150267 I think it was, only saw a quick glance of it because I was going towards Holyhead when I saw it)

I know TOPS/TRUST aren't available to the general public (like me, I don't even have much idea what TOPS and TRUST are (other than the numbering system for rolling stock being known as TOPS also)). However, now that there is open train times, is there some facility that the general public can use to find out what unit is operating a certain service and passing times at junctions/station which the train is not scheduled to call at, even if certain trains (such as the royal train and nuclear flask trains) are hidden from the public for saftey/security reasons?

OK - a couple I can fill in (only a couple mind)

Off Newport, 0736, 0936 and 1136 CDF-HHDs are all 175s (as then are their return workings from HHD), as are 0557 MAN, 0704 MAN and 1419 MAN. 1721 CDF-HHD is also a 175.

0915 SHR-CDF originating from HHD is usually (9 times out of 10) a 158.

The 06:30 Manchester Picadiilly - Milford Haven & 13:08 Milford Haven - Manchester Picadilly services are supposed to be booked for a class 158 on saturdays

I was up in Manchester on Saturday (18th); shortly before leaving Piccadilly on the 1927 XC service, I watched an ATW 158 pull into the next platform (didn't catch the exact number; it was in the old silver livery though). Presumably this set would have worked the 1930 Cardiff train (it was the only ATW unit in the station at the time).

Yup - the Manchester service I work is 1730 to CDF, which departs three minutes after a 1727 XC to Bournemouth, so the timings match up. We arrive Manchester usually at about x:11

Yes, would have been the 19 30. If you refer back to some recent posts over the last couple of days you will find it has already been discussed and explained.

Oh I dunno - I've done Truro-Newport before now...

I did Cardiff to Portsmouth (which still happens now!) and they are very uncomfy after a while! They're fine for journeys no more than two hours but for a mainline service that goes from South to North Wales (and Manchester) I'm not sure!

Yep, I saw it too as I was catching the 19:35 390 to Euston.
