Hi all. Got my stage 2 mmi coming up on the 4th August. Rather anxious about it but finding it a lot harder to figure out what to expect on the day in comparison to stage 1 assessments which I knew exactly what was coming up and in what order lol.
Would anyone please be able to advise what happens on the day / the structure of it. Thank you in advance.

Who have you applied with? It varies from TOC to TOC, but with Southeastern, we had an SJT beforehand on the day, which wasn't scored and was just there to give them some extra information if they needed to ask additional questions. Then we had the MMI question sheet to fill out, and then was the MMI itself. They'll ask you to go into more detail about each of your examples, and ask questions when they need to in order to get what they need for their scoring sheets.
I was super stressed going in, but my examiner was really lovely, and the whole experience was so much better than I could have anticipated. Above all else, try and relax, and stick to STAR for each of your answers
I spent a lot of time preparing, practising with my partner, and going over scenarios I could use for any questions I could imagine. These two threads have some good advice.

Yes, that's basically along the lines of what you'll be asked. The two threads I linked to have a good list of potential questions that you could be asked, along with some of the key things they want to hear from you, in order to demonstrate that you've got the skills they're looking for.

Definitely not. Take a second or two to compose your thoughts before answering. That’s exactly what I done and passed my MMI. Good luck.

Hi folks,
Just posting this question since I have been considering applying for a trainee train driver role at some point but have been put off due to the fact I am worried about the medical.
Main things I am worried about are that I take warfarin. I am on this foe the rest of my life due to a clotting disorder that caused me to have a dvt and pe. Other than that I am stable and the condition (antiphosplipid sydrome) is well controlled. Doesn't cause me any disability or mean I might loose control/black out. Does anyone here know if blood thinners are something that would be automatically denied or do I still have a chance?
I also have autism. But again that's mild and I function well in society. Able to drive and have passed a medical for hgvs and buses,etc. I don't think autism would be an issue right though? Like again, case by case basis? Only other thing that worries me is when I was a teenager I had a bit oif depression and anxiety. Up to recently I had minor anxiety related to health anxiety. Didn't effected my day to day life and I've not take medication for years. Again worried the presence of previous mental health issues will be an automatic no when they look at it.
Is it worth me applying when a role comes up do you think? Does anyone here have an idea where I'd stand on medical grounds? Or where I could go to find the medical standards?

Just apply. Got to be in the game to win the job. Medical is at the end of quite a few tests / interviews. Sounds like what you've had going on is under control, however I'm not a medical person.

Document is 25 pages so shouldn't take long to find any guidance relevant to you. But I suggest paragraphs 2.6-2.8 if you're short on time.
So verbal communication is assessed in the interview, and I have seen people on here saying that they have failed their MMI on verbal communication. But I don't think thinking before you speak would lead to that
Hi guys, got my DMI on Thursday and I’m not too worried about that however I am worried about my medical. I’m currently at a BMI of 42 and I’ve read there’s a hard cut off of 33? I’m quite athletic, I play tennis and go to the gym multiple times a week and I’ll be heartbroken if this stops me. Any help will be appreciated!

Hi everyone I have got my day 1 opc assessment for WMR in August. Just had the email inviting me this morning. In terms of what to expect on the day is it just the assessments or will there be any sort of interview? I’m guessing best tips for the assessment are to practice as much as possible with the material they send you over to practice with?
I don't know how WMR structures things, but 99% certain you won't have any interviews at this stage. Does the practice material list what assessments you'll be sitting on the day?

- Tea-occ (Test of Everyday Attention)
- TRP1b (Trainability for Rules and Procedures, Part 1b)
- TRP2 (Trainability for Rules and Procedures, Part 2)
- DFFT (Driver Fault Finding Test)
I know that during BR your hearing loss had to not exceed 20dB on appointment, and 30dB afterwards. Is this still the case at any TOC or at Network Rail, or is it always 20dB or 30dB now?
I’m mainly asking in relation to safety critical roles at SWR, but due to nationalisation (by that I mean it being all made into GBR) I feel as if it all might change, so my question is focused on general industry standards. Thanks in advance

I am currently a Bus Driver, passed the medical for it with no issues. I have a chronic illness, Ulcerative Colitis, and have been on Codeine for a number of years. This was disclosed in my medical and obviously shows up on drug tests, the DVLA was informed and I was given the okay.
The question I have is, would the medical for becoming a train driver be any different? I assume they would be more strict on what prescriptions are allowed, and even though codeine is a relatively mild opiate, it is still an opiate so would this mean I would fail the medical? I like being a bus driver, but being a train driver is a dream job for me.

If you have been on it a while and you're already performing a safety critical task unimpeded (ie no more side effects), declared it in the medical to be a driver also, then I don't think it would be an issue. You can only try and be as honest as possible.
The issue may be that if you made a mistake and even though you declared that you were taking codeine and they let you carry on, would a urine test be able to tell if you had 1 codeine or 5. It can potentially be abused so I suppose it will be at the discretion of the TOC.
Hopefully someone can be a bit more enlightening. It's a wealth of knowledge.

When I get selected for random drug testing in work, they do the standard test which involves swabbing my neck, forehead, behind my ears and scraping my tongue. This returns a positive result which leads to the next step, they send for the on call drug tester (not a licensed doctor). When this person arrives I have to pee in a cup, he then tests the urine. This also returns a positive result, normally, indicating I have the opiate in my system, it doesn't specify which opiate though. They then send it off to the lab and place me on paid suspension (basically a free week holiday). The lab test is mainly to confirm the drug I have tested positive for is the drug I have a prescription for. They can probably see how much of the drug is in my urine, they would need a bloodtest to see how much is actively in my system though which they don't do. If I was involved in a serious accident, the police would likely do a drugs test and then a bloodtest so they can know how much is actively in my system. Maybe the rail industry is the same? They can make sure any drugs you are on are prescription but only the police can do bloodtests if you are involved in an accident?

Codeine is a no as far as I’m aware. Was annoying for me as I had to swap migraine tablets and the new ones aren’t quite as good as my old codeine based ones

Ah, that's a shame. I can always swap to loperamide, have to hope this stricture in my colon heals one day for that to happen though.

I just wanted to say thank you for everyone for sharing their experiences and knowledge. I have been going through the stages with OPC for Chiltren Railways, but unfortunately failed the MMI because of one question. The whole process has been an eye-opener and no train journey will ever be the same.

Been invited for stage 1 of the OPC tests. Looks like there's loads of different tests but does anyone have a comprehensive list of what is involved in the written tests and what is a computer test for stage 2?
