For some strange reason train driver salaries always trigger off a small section of the online community . I suppose it's the " they just push a lever backwards and forwards and don't even have to steer bloody thing" effect. If so, why aren't they applying in droves for the job?

Forget comparisons with RPI. It is a bad metric and rarely used these days. However since 2019, CPI is some 23% so 15% is not too ad in the current climate.

Legally speaking a ballot was not required. ASLEF could have accepted the offer if they wished

Ballot required as per dispute guidelines I’ve been told. Needed to formally end the dispute.

Funny how RPI is the government's preferred measure when it wants to put up fares, yet when the government is paying out it prefers CPI

Yes that’s how I have always understood it. On the railway it’s RPI. Only use CPI for pensions. Never known it any different.

With Northern driver RDW agreement having expired last week, which I understand was due to separate but related issues, with the pay rise now going through does this mean the RDW agreement is likely to be reinstated again?

It expired at end of August. Not likely to be reinstated anytime soon as there are issues still to be resolved. Possibility of strike action at some point in the future I would guess if not resolved. Plan for disruption to services anyway especially at weekends
