Does anyone know if or when Arriva Trains Wales will start repainting their class 175 Coradia fleet into the newer ATW livery? I am aware that some members of the class are suffering from corrosion at the window edges which might be relevant.

Cheers.

I wonder if they will at all. The franchise runs out in October 18, which would mean that any repainting scheme would finish up just as the new franchisee is about to come on board. There may be some units released in the new livery if they've undergone repairs recently though.

That's a good point regarding the franchise, the arrangement seems to be unlike that adopted in Scotland because I haven't read anywhere that the next franchisee has to keep the current livery.

As for the corrosion repairs, I did wonder if that would be an opportunity for a repaint. How many units are being repaired?

I'm not really sure the ATW 158 livery is the 'new ATW livery' it was a livery to promote the WG after they funded the 158 refurbishments.

Is it the newest livery applied to Arriva Trains Wales stock? Yes, so in other words, it is the newest ATW livery, there's no debate. Don't forget that it has been applied to other classes as well.

You've obviously missed the point, yes it is the new livery applied to ATW stock, but it is not necessarily an Arriva Livery........

The ATW 142s and 175s are the only classes that haven't had the new livery applied at all.
The ATW classes that I've seen in the new livery are it's 150s, 153s, 143s, 158s and the Premier service.

I understood that there were no plans to re-paint the 142s and 175s in the new livery at all. I assume this is because the 142s will be gone soon (in theory) not sure why the 175s are not being done.

It's unusual, isn't it. I can understand why the 142s are not being done, just not the 175s.

Why go to the expense as the Franchise expires in 2 years. That's why GWR are not re-liverying their 150/1s and 153 as they will not be with them for much longer.

Do you know what the current status is of the number of 150s that are still in the old ATW livery?

Because bodywork overhaul and repaint will be part of the VMI and has to be done. It doesn't matter if the franchise has 2 years to go or whatever: if the contract with the ROSCO says it has to be done, then it has to be done.

The common sense approach (words not heard on the railway in the past 20 years) is for Welsh Government to commission a livery, logo and brand, and for it be applied to all stock undergoing repainting, in exactly the same way ScotRail has worked in Scotland.

Does that mean the livery worn by the 158s, some 150s etc will not be ditched, rather it will be modified to replace the logos?

I've always thought that a dark green livery with red logos would be a better representation of Wales for the Welsh franchise livery, but this is irrelevant.

I've always thought that WalesRail would sound good, but grammatical I don't think that it could be considered to be correct.

Far too much common sense for the railway. No what needs to happen instead is every couple of years the franchise to change or for them to change the name of the franchise. Perfect example being in Greater Anglia, where Abellio have still not got round to doing a lot of their fleet!

When I posted that I did think that, that cannot be right and I went to go and get some factual information, but you have beaten me to it. I shall amend my post now.

If we're going for the simple, 'common sense' approach then I'd suggest using TrawsCymru to create an overall brand for rail and long-distance bus services.

Or follow GWR into looking classic, which seems in vogue at the moment, and have "Rheilffyrdd Cymru" with a nice crest.

The other suggestions, other than Trawscymru, sound a bit 80s.

It's not up for renewal yet, the Invitiation to Tender won't be published until August next year, hence it's far too early to ascertain who may choose to bid.

I may be proven wrong but I personally very much doubt it, the current livery is still based around Arriva turquoise.

But the Wales & Borders franchise is not Welsh property, any more than GWR is "English".
It was a misnomer when called Arriva Trains Wales.
What do you think the good folk of Chester, Shrewsbury and Hereford think of dragons and shades of green?
The Marches counties do not figure anywhere in the branding.

Does anyone know what the actual cost is for a new livery for a 2/3 car set? I suppose, traditionally, repaints were carried out when they were required, and not when a new franchise (or new funding source) took over. Sometimes it just seems an unnecessary cost!

The Welsh Government will lead on the next Wales and Borders franchising round.

I didn't mention colours, dragons or anything else, but I should imagine they're as bothered about it as the people of Hexham, Carlisle and Newcastle are about ScotRail units turning up on services.

You know what I suggested, given you quoted it, but to repeat, and to clarify, the Welsh Government, who are leading the re-franchising of the Wales and Borders franchise, should commission a logo, brand and livery, and have it applied to stock undergoing re-painting.

I care not one jot if it's green, has dragons or any other mythological creatures as part of the logo, what I do care about is money being wasted on repainting stock that isn't due to be repainted, on units being taken out of service to be re-painted or covered in vinyl wraps, the cost of rolling stock being re-liveried, and the additional cost of stations, signage and other materials being re-branded.

There's plenty of British Rail signage around the industry, particularly track side, there's some lurking around on stations, bridges and other passenger facing areas. Little of it has deteriorated to the point it needs replacing. There's still stock in the British Rail colours they were delivered in some 25 years ago - they are shabby and tired looking, but 15 year old stock in some parts of the country are on their third colour scheme. There's no justification for that level of expenditure.

The current cost is around £40,000 per vehicle. It'll be a little more on a 23m vehicle and a little less on a 20m vehicle. I'd go with around £150,000 for a 4 car EMU and £130,000 for a 3 car DMU.

A lot of the people along the Marches feel more of an afinity with Wales than England. In the school I teach at (in England), the vast majority of kids support the Welsh rugby and football teams rather than England; many of the teachers, too.

I entirely agree with your point...so that was a considerable amount of money ATW (or WG) spent on repainting most of their fleet.
