You are probably correct. Is ATW embarrassed to announce all Holyhead/Cardiff franchise trains terminate in Shrewsbury, it probably blows the WG ideology "everyone wants to go to Cardiff from the north"

You are correct, a friend within the rail industry told me yesterday that Gerald is open access and WG rail division insist it runs (they pay for it), even though all franchise services terminate at Shrewsbury.

As at a couple of minutes ago, four current services reported full and standing. It's Thursday, it isn't school holidays, there's no Club 55 going on...

ETA: Question for merlodlliw - do you happen to know what are the chances of seat reservations being in operation this coming Sunday?

Given the fact that the first we've heard of this is on here several days after the engineering work began, without any complaints in the media, there are two possibilities:

1. No one is bothered about the changes
2. No one has noticed the changes as there is such little through traffic between north Wales and south Wales.

I know which one I think is more likely, but both explanations undermine the arguments for the south-north link!

I'm booked on the 1153 from Hereford through to Man Picc. I have a seat reservation, but knowing how Sundays seem to be a law unto themselves as regards what set is in use, I'm not too optimistic.

Just hoping that as this train starts from Newport it might not be too packed by Hereford, although presumably some people will have used the rail replacement bus from Cardiff and joined the train at Newport.

Incidentally, do any of the publicly accessible rail websites allow us to find out what set is scheduled for a particular journey?

I agree- the ATW website mentions engineering work between Cardiff and Newport & Chester and Crewe, but says nothing about turning all North Wales -Cardiff [with the exception of "Gerald"] services back at Shrewsbury. I happened to find out by accident from the departure screens at my local station!!

Noted on Twitter today... ATW are asking for feedback on how well they communicated these engineering works. The survey notes that lines between Newport and Cardiff are closed but still nothing about the changes at Shrewsbury.

One up side is that the departing Holyhead trains from Shrewsbury have been a couple of minutes late thereby making a connection off the Cambrian possible if you've got yourself prepared.

I wouldn't worry about that. A freight train broke down on Tuesday going south between Wrexham and Shrewsbury, and this duly led to northbound services being badly delayed. Taking that, and the overcrowding HowardGWR mentions, plenty of people have had their journeys affected by this decision, even if no-one changed trains at Shrewsbury because of it.

Incidentally, journeycheck does say that Cardiff-Holyhead trains will be cancelled between Cardiff and Shrewsbury (2nd line down), but only for this weekend.
