I know nothing is running in passenger service but I heard a train horn this morning near Hayes and harlington. Just curious.

Not exactly RUNNING as such but there are plenty of trains parked on the Brighton main line in Purley today. Our neighbour opposite has had a GBRf Class 66 chuntering away at the bottom of her garden since the small hours of the morning.

Eurotunnel still runs 24 hours a day on Christmas Day, although at a reduced frequency.

All kinds of horns on this service. Furthermore, the traction appears to be so devilishly reliable that it effortlessly deals with all manner of supply, infrastructure, timetable and pathing challenges. I would dearly like to know why it hasn't been deployed more ubiquitously. It would slash the quantity of digital ink spilt on this forum!

No passenger services running on GWR but drivers will be booking on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day to go in and start the HSTs up to prevent flat batteries and for defrosting purposes (should the temperature dip below zero!)

Sounds a waste of fuel and of costly overtime payment.
Could not a shore supply be used to keep batteries charged and engines warm ?

Thought I heard a train horn when I was walking home earlier, I'm just outside the centre of Doncaster. Didn't hear it come north though, and as it's fairly quiet outside I would expect to, could be something in the works I suppose?

I think the cost of setting this up, in several depots and stabling points across the area and essentially twice for each HST (at either end of the train) for 2 days a year would be prohibitive compared to the cost of a few hours overtime or the damage to an engine.

There are a total of 25 engineering trains required on the Marshgate and Doncaster South S&C renewals sites throughout the course of both projects. It'd more than likely be one of these trains manoeuvring within the worksite.
