Is it possible to get a refund on an unused London Euston to Preston Standard Anytime Single ticket (or any SDS)? National rail advises 'may be' and if so is there an admin charge generally for these refunds?

Thanks,

Yes and £10 discretionary admin fee.

Where did you buy it?

It was purchased from an online travel retailer.

I also excessed the ticket to FOS at Euston Station by card-is the excess refundable also?

Quite a complex scenario but could also do with the £64.50 getting refunded if possible-can't find anything about refunds for excesses anywhere!

Thanks,

You need to contact the retailer.

If the retailer was the same for the excess as the original ticket, I'd expect only one admin charge to be made. However in this case, I suspect two £10 admin charges will be applicable as you need to contact both Virgin Trains and an online travel retailer.

The retailers were different but more than happy to pay admin charges than lose the unused ticket values-the online retailer obviously wants the original unused 'SDS' ticket so not sure how VT (retailer selling excess at Euston) will go on without the original SDS ticket-but will contact both retailers and take it from there.

As long as I know the SDS and Excess can be refunded thats great-thanks for the help.

I'd take a photocopy of the original ticket if you can before you send it off. It might be useful for VT

It shouldn't be two charges, surely! I appreciate, Yorkie, that you're living in the real world but the OP only has one ticket, a 1st single to Preston. There has recently been discussion on another thread about the fact an excess changes a ticket to another one.

The ticket office sold the excess and are only required to refund what they sold. The other ticket would have to be sent off to the original retailer. In the case of online purchases, it's usually better to log into the account and follow the steps to obtain a refund that way.

There are two tickets from two retailers, two admin fees apply.

If they both came from the same retailer, the second admin fee could be waived if the tickets are on the same refund application, but that is not possible with two retailers.

An interesting view. The alternative view is that an excess fare converts one ticket into a different ticket. If this is so, then the paper on which the excess fare is printed has the status of a voucher rather than a ticket. In which case, the refund is for one ticket with its associated voucher(s) so only one change fee should apply.

Whatever you want to call them it's from two different retailers, so two different applications are required thus two admin fees.
