Just wondering if there are many scotrail employees on this forum, im starting work for them soon myself..
I couldn't fault the management my side absolutely spot on. I worked a week in lieu I believe
still on the sleepers. I love it.Yeah I work for scotrail. A trolley dolly just biding my time waiting for a guards job to become available![]()
No I have not done any of the assessments or interviews. If applying internally for a job with Scotrail you need to complete 6 months probation before you will be considered for another position (a somewhat much unknown fact to many members of staff for some reason). I have a little less than 2 weeks then I can get the ball rolling on my preferred career path.
As for who gets preference in regards to external or internal employees that is a very difficult question to answer. It is my understanding that the union has an agreement with Scotrail that any job that may become available within the organisation first needs to be advertised internally, then it may be advertised externally to the public. BUT, this doesn't necessarily mean that Scotrail prefers to choose internal applicants over external, they are merely fulfilling their side of the agreement they made with the union. I say this because Scotrail is also paid an unknown amount of money by the Scottish government for every external applicant they employ (So I've been told).
So I think it's more of a balancing act...Keeping current employees and the union happy and receiving the financial rewards that come with hiring external applicants.
At the moment I can think of 4 people I know internally who are moving up to conductors jobs in the next 2-3 weeks and I have recently seen 1-2 people being trained as conductors who were externals. I'm sure there are many more from each side though.
That reminds me, there may be even more conductors jobs becoming available across the whole Scotrail network as they just had a huge push for trainee drivers internally at most depots and more often than not current conductors step into those positions.
You just need to hold tight (I know it's a ridiculously long process) and keep yourself in the right frame of mind

As for the question of whether they are good company to work for, so far I cannot fault them and would even go as far as saying they are probably the best company I have worked for. Certainly an organisation you want to be with in such times of economic uncertainty.![]()
Good on you mate, I wish that would happen to me.

With Scotrail is there any provision for storing personal belongings on the train for on-train staff like hospitality/examiners/conductors? Do they have access to the drivers cab where stuff could be left? Things like phones and wallets.
Ask a driver if you can keep your phone in the cab and see what kind of reaction you get.
