Underground lines face conversion to light rail

Conversion of London Underground lines to light rail operation forms one of the conditions of Transport for London's funding settlement over the next four years. ...
http://www.transportbriefing.co.uk/news/story?id=7190

Is this in regards to signalling or working practises or something fundamentally further?

Edit: Found a short reference somewhere else that Tfl has to migrate to using lighter tube rolling stock with reduced power consumption so savings can be made on line electrification equipment.

What a load of crap. The trains being delivered in 2015 and later are not LRV's - this isn't the DLR after all !

I can't work out where people get this stuff from. The Underground is not light rail and is unlikely ever to be. The cost of conversion would be phenomenal and pointless.

I am sure that I have read previously that proposals/options (not sure how serious they ever were) to extend the DLR to either Charing Cross (utilising part of the abandoned section of the Jubilee line between Green Park and Charing Cross and the old Jubilee line platforms at the latter) or Waterloo (using the "Drain") were rapidly rejected due to loading gauge issues.

I don't think the DLR is much (if any) wider, but it would be the clearance issues because they don't have a tunnel shape

The Charing Cross extension is a TfL proposal - it would have used the Jubilee platforms at Charing Cross and the running tunnels from there towards Aldwych, which would have been enlarged. It's on the back burner at the moment because there's no money, but was always a long-term idea anyway.

I don't think TfL have ever planned a DLR extension to Waterloo - that tends to appear in the letters pages of magazines from time to time!
