I couldn't care less about football. The media coverage is ridiculous. It seems the nation is obsessed with what color socks John Terry is wearing, and who Wayne Rooney is going about sleeping with.
These men are role models to millions of children, yet the way a majority of them act is completely outrageous. And they are seriously, crazily overpaid!

See Katie Price, Peter Andre, Cheryl Cole, Simon Cowell, Coleen Rooney and the list goes on. I give far less of a toss what any of these people are doing/eating/shagging, it seems the media has become an engine of commerce.

Just the sight of those racks full of 70+ 'women rags' such as OK, hello, heat, now, that's life, real life. It makes me fear for the intelligence of the human race.

If we're going to properly get in to things hating then for me it's soaps. At least football is a real game, with real people who've achieved real results. I roll my eyes when anyone asks me 'have you seen what's going on in Eastenders'. IT'S NOT REAL!!

I also meant to add that it is NOT the activities of a majority of footballers as role models that are appalling, in the Premier League alone there are around 500 players throughout all of the squads, for it to be a majority would require upwards of 250 players from just the Premier League doing this type of stuff. In reality it probably isn't even 20!

Then there is American "Football". People are getting swoony over here about a strike or a lockout for the coming season. It is a rather slow, time-consuming game, what with its starts and stops and interminable commercial breaks - even when you are at the stadium. And of course the usual media frenzy about player indiscretions.

I can't say I like real football too much. I do like Australian Rules football, but they don't have it on TV here anymore. Same thing with Cricket - I enjoy that occasionally, but again, no longer on TV.

I think my vote goes to Casillas as well.

Effectively we've got a very offensive team against a somewhat conservative team, with only one defender between the two! I think a rejig is needed for the Prem team, and a trimming to 5-a-side including GK. So I would suggest dropping Kaka from the World team and playing Ronaldo up front. As for the Prem though, I think the following would work best: Reina, Ferdinand, Rooney, Torres, Drogba (with Rooney in midfield).

Or, reading Zoe's post, maybe stick to 6-a-side including GK, and play Ferdinand in defensive midfield and Rooney behind the front two (sparing Nani). Terry can assume defensive roles. As for the World team, back to the original five plus Casillas?

I hate football, I find it boring.

I am also sure most of them find railways boring (Some exceptions are on the forum!)

Although most of my family like football, and support Celtic, since I was little I have never taken to it and never liked it, Transport (Train, Busses Planes) have always appealed to me more so I'm the odd one out.

As a football fan myself. And I attend upwards of 100 games a season on average I would just like to stick up for my favourite sport.

1 It's just 22 men kicking a bag of wind about.

Well it happens to be the most watched sport on Planet Earth. It is a multi billion pound industry that generates massive amounts of money not just inside the sport but outside of it too. A Nation, City, Town, even Village can be uplifted one the result of one match.
Nothing comes close to football in its ability to join people together in a common cause.

2 The Media devotes too much time and space to it

Well the media knows what sells, and football sells.

3 The players are bad role models to kids

They are footballers, I doubt any single footballer pays the game to be a role model. They play it because they enjoy it and are good at it.
Parents are role models. If a child is taking his lead from what footballers do then the parents have failed (in my opinion)

4 Footballers these days earn too much

Footballers earn what the club pays them, ie, what the club thinks they are worth. Nobody on this forum would turn down a pay rise, why should a footballer.
Nobody bats an eyelid when a movie star is reported to be earning 10m dollars for a film. It's entertainment, they are paid the going rate. Just like we all are.

5 Why can't footballers be more like Rugby players. Have respect and be real men

Rugby players don't argue with the Ref. No they don't but then again footballers dont gouge eyes, stamp on each other, grab each other balls in the scrum.
Rugby players don't roll around like they have been shot. No but they do feign injury for advantage

Right OK a small percentage are, probably about the same percentage that are around in everyday life. But the vast majority just go to watch a game of football.
Until you have supported a club and lived and breathed the highs and lows football can bring there is just no way you can explain what it is like

Football is a hobby to an awful lot of people, to some it's a way of life. Just like railways are to some people. All hobbies, to someone who doesn't indulge, seem weird and pointless. So just as people on here get annoyed when people denigrate railway enthusiasts a football fan will do the same

This thread has been hijacked by football fans or, at any rate, people who know footballers' names - in a list of ten, I had vaguely heard of two - another example of an assumption that everyone is interested in the game and knows who the players are. This is simply untrue. I could rattle off the names of baseball players for hours, but I don't because hardly anyone would have an inkling of who I was on about. I am similarly ignorant when it comes to foopball.
