Id have told Boness to get something decent running, like a 47! Then it may have been worth it!!! lol

I was unintentional. Arrived on New Years Day for a train that was cancelled, despite checking it should have been running. If the plan was as it should have been it was 39 minutes. The choices were:

Miss you last piece of passenger track excluding new build

Miss Alloa last piece of new build track in Scotland

Do both miss 37 milage at Bo'ness

Try and do all three with 9 minutes across town.

Made it though.

OK lets rephrase that. What I am trying to get at here is my idea of a long walk is from the armchair to fridge and back again.

I have a great idea for Birmingham. I recon in 40 minutes you could sign up for at least another 4 charity direct debits. You could really push it and go for five.

A couple of people a few hundred pages back mentioned short time connections.

I do not have a problem with short connections (under the minumum interchange time). You have to know when to use this and have a plan if it does not work. A short connection where you can recover the plan later on is OK or understand what the implication of missing the connection is.

A 3 minute connection into the one train a week that does the piece of line you are looking for or the last train home is not bright.

You can do this but make sure you have a way out and do not get yourself stranded. A good example here was myself and some friends went to Glasgow/Edinburgh for the day jumping on/off trains which all worked fine with trip on the 67 on the fife circle.

We could in theory go round the all the way round the fife circle for a 2 minute connection into the last train back down the West Coast to Crewe for a connection back to Abergavenny (where I had parked).

We did not do this we went to Inverkeithing and came back for 30 minutes at Edinburgh and had allowed 16 minute change at Crewe on to the last train home. As it turned out the inward working for the last train south was late and left Edinburgh 20 mins late arrived in Crewe 30 mins late and missed the last train back to Abergavenny.

In this case I had allowed sufficient time to change at both Edinburgh and Crewe Virgin had to provide transport and the taxi cost them over £300. Not bad on a £10 ticket.

The point I am trying to make is keep to the minimum interchange where it matters. If I had allowed 10 minutes at Crewe to make the change I would have had to pay the £300 for the taxi as I had to get back that night and VT would not do anything as I have not allowed enough time.

Use short interchange time but know when not to.

But you knew what i was getting at!!
Anyway, i always say BNS!!

Going with Yorkies advice, words like Donny, Pompey and 'The Cross' are not allowed either then.
Not at all. It's just the three letter acronyms that tend to match up with the official station codes.

Its whatever the poster wants to write. Anyone need clarification, they can ask.

True. It's not much of an issue outside of the 'Fares, Tickets and Routing' forum, where it does matter if someone just asks for the cheapest fares between, say, BNS and FGH.

But because BHM/BNS is such a common mistake, some people will correct you in a sarcastic manner, even where the context is obvious. It's become a bit of a forum joke, and I think Yorkie, with his Moderator hat on, was trying to save you the embarrasment while being informative. ;)

Back at home now on the PC. Sorry for a few duplicate posts in this thread earlier - the Wi-i on my phone was playing up.

Glad to hear everything is running smoothly down the WCML - will this be your 4th trip to Crewe now?

Exactly. Which is why i was saying dont try silly things when sonic gets to Birmingham.
Always make sure there is a way out. Even with minimum interchange times (which there isnt heading to Aston), it was just taking unnecessary risks when there was no way out. Except for a 3mile walk!!

I agree, only if you have a plan b it's ok to take risks with short connection times.

No probs if we'd have thought on earlier, i'd have suggested the 14:51 VT from Edinburgh, change at Preston then the 19:03 from Man Picc to Cheltenham.

But Yorkie said we should also try and use the proper station names, as well as correct codes. That means no nicknames/ local names, which is what Pompey and Donny is.

As the exact correct codes/ names didnt matter for this thread, i used what was easiest.
If it mattered i wouldnt use codes anyway, because they could be open to confusion. You use something that everybody knows, ie correct names, if it matters. It didnt here, yet i was told to try and use correct names/ codes. No reason for it.

Yep, but Sonic wanted to do Airdrie-Bathgate. Also made it more interesting too:)

I use LSP abbreviation for Liverpool South Parkway rather than the code LSY, i use abbreviations for most Stations, unless the name has few letters like Crewe

I know, that could have been plan b had he missed the North Clyde Line.:D

Yep, definitely. I looked at the subsequent A-B on Journeycheck and its a good job he didn't miss the one he went for and hung around for the next one - the inward service was delayed and subsequently terminated / restarted from Bathgate.

But considering Birmingham New Street had been mentioned previously. To be honest I would have thought considering what was happening, and the fact we mentioned a quick return to Aston (quick isnt possible from Barnes), BNS was pretty obvious. If it wasnt, then i wouldnt have used it.

Correct thing to do.

Go for the tight connections (have done minus a few times and made it). Understand what will happen if you don't.

Make sure you have allowed enough time into a key train.

It does not matter in the middle of a trip but vital if you are attempting to get home.

I meant to add to my previous post the Crewe to Abergavenny taxi was the first time in over 30 years of travelling round the rail system of the UK I did not manage to get home on a train where I was supposed to. Excluding planned rail replacement buses. I have been on trains many hours late (record 10 hours) but this was the first time and only so far in a taxi.
