I'm afraid it's all part of our 'dumbing-down-blame-someone-else-for-your-own-idiocy' society. To prevent insurance claims from simple folk who try to get off a train at signals or other places the train may stop before it actually reaches the station, adding the term 'next station stop' precludes them from doing so.
That doesn't make any sense. Why would anyone try to get off when the train isn't stopped at a station, and besides the doors will be locked.
People used to be entrusted to let themselves on and off trains at one time, aside from which having locked doors does not stop people from trying to get off - wintessed that last Friday after being stuck for three hours outside Leicester.
Some Northern services tend to just not bother, especially East Lancs stoppers.

I wonder where they were hoping to goHow far did they get in their attempt to get off?

Something that annoys me is "calling at the following principal stations....Coventry, Birmingham Intl...etc". They list all the stations....not just the principal ones!
They are trying to make sure people don't think stopping at a signal is the station - very necessary at Crewe where everything stops outside !
Sorry, I'm not buying it. What difference does it make to the passenger whether the announcement made is "The next station is..." or "The next station stop is...." and the train then stops at a signal or something? Absolutely none at all. And has been pointed out auto announcements don't say "station stop" so that blows that theory out of the water.

If you say the "next stop is" and the train pulls up at a signal then you are technically incorrect. If you say the "next station is" as you approach the next place booked to call but there is a station the train doesn't call at before you reach it then you are technically incorrect.
Announcing "next station stop" covers the guard in the event of people trying to get off if the train gets held at a signal and if a passenger 'pulls the handle' because they see the train drift through the 'next station'.
That's a load of b******s tbh isn't it? What sort of idiot is going to try to get off a train when it's pretty obvious to any fool that it isn't at a station? And has been pointed out the doors are locked anyway. As for a passenger pulling the communication cord...or what ever the proper name is nowadays....that's not very likely either is it?
The passengers trying to get off at a signal explanation doesn't make any sense anyway, as I pointed put earlier. And the auto announcements don't say "station stop" anyway as has been said also.

I had to 'shut the job down' after idiots on the way to a match at Wembley pullled open the doors of an A60 as far as they could, then squeezed through the relativley small gap and clambered on to the track while stopped at a signal. Anyone dealing with the public on a daily basis will tell you that they can and will do pretty much anything they aren't supposed to however stupid and idiotic it may seem.
With the prepronderance of 'no win no fee "lawyers" ' about any technicality (like saying at Finchley Road ' the next stop is Wembley Park') would be seized upon and used as part of their claim or as a defence for anyone who was caught and charged with trespass.
