So, what do you personally wish was saved from the cutters torch? I'm talking about things we don't have one single example of at all. Limit of 4 answers per user to give everyone a crack. People, myself included, may make mistakes but try not to start a flame match.

My list;
1 - Blue Pullman, the HST owes a lot to this design.
2 - Baby Deltic
3 - One of the 900 odd WD Austerity locos (how can that many slip through the net?)
4 - North British Warship (the larger one)

"Gordon" at the SVR engine house is an Austerity and there might be others.

Whilst I don't disagree, my original post was to designed to stop specific locos being mentioned. We have Class 87s and 37s preserved, I mean a class or type of stock that's been completely disposed of, that you wish hadn't. As regards my post about the Austerity, maybe I got the wrong specific one, but I'm sure I read of a class manufactured in those amounts that not a single one was saved. Anyone have any ideas what I mean, or if I'm not recalling correctly?

  • The entire Class 370 APT-P family - Though there are still two half-sets left in existance, NR/DafT idiocy and refusal to invest in proper stock means that neither of them are currently railworthy. :sad::mad:<(
    .
  • The APT-E - One in preservation (And slightly better condition than the 370's, admittedly) but BR's lack of foresight meant that this one still "got the chop" in a way...And we lost out on a fine high-speed, non-electric beast that would've made the Chiltern and Heart of Scotland services pretty damn awesome (If not rather underwear-browning!) to travel on! <D
    .
  • The Bulleid Mk. I 4DD EMUs - If we had kept them around and in service to this day, we would have had designers using it for inspiration and giving us European style double-deck trains years ago!
    .
  • The Class 140 DMU...If a 142 has suspension as bouncy as that (I'd just love to experience riding a 142 through Crewe at 300mph! :shock:) just imaging how kangaroo-like the 140's must've been! :lol::D

Class 309 "Clactons".

Class 305s (Dont know if there are any preserved?)

Although there are a couple preserved I would love to preserve another Class 411 CEP and have it in BR Blue & Grey or early Network SouthEast "Toothpaste".

And a couple of Class 414 HAP units (Express gear EPB basically) in BR Blue & Grey.

I dont know if there are any Class 413 CAP units around any more they were non-gangway EPB design EMUs?

Class 309 "Clactons".

I would have liked to have travelled on one of those Jaffa Cakes... ;) Now all you get are 360s. They're not bad, but hey are pretty ugly! And as for the ocasional 321... :roll:

I think I'd have liked to try an old 1983 stock from the Jubilee line before it was extended. See what all the fuss about their "notoriety" was... (Anyone care to explain?)

Two coaches from the class 309 stock became Deparmental test vehicles, after which the were transferred to MoD Pigs Bay at Shoeburyness for storage.

This is all that remains of the 76 coaches (plus some mk.1 steel carriages reworked to convert the 2 car sets to 4 car. After the end of operation on Liverpool St-Clacton/Walton sevices in 1994, seven trains were stored at Blackpool until re-entering service in and around Manchester for a number of years, until they too were declared as surplus.

It is from here that the passed into preservation with the Electric Railway Museum, and are currently at Bagington (Coventry Airport), Warwickshire, along with a coach from 2-EPB 6307.

Class

305's fared less well. Of the 71 trains of 3/4 car sets built for use on the Liverpool St.-Chingford, Enfield Town and Hertford East lines (305/1 3 car) and to Bishops Stortford (305/2 4 car), none of the 305/1 survived after withdrawal, some 305/2 were transfered to Glasgow and manchester, but all were also scrapped.

Both 3 and 4 car units did work fairly frequently on GE line services to Southend from Liverpool Street.

I'd go for a D600 Warship, Kestrel and GT3. APT-E sounds like a giggle too.

Single leaf doors and unreliability I think were the main issues.

It's still around, but definitely not in a railworthy condition for running. Suits me just fine, what an ugly trog it is. :lol:

Oh yes, and a class 308 unit. I wish there was still one knocking around Leeds on special occasions :(

I believe a few 140s are still in use on Iranian railways, although given the situation in Iran I don't think even the most ardent pacer enthusiast would travel all the way there just to ride on one.

They're still painted in WYPTE livery too.

They are 141s and were much more attractive than the prototype 140 ever was.

You guys will have no idea what I'm on about but here I go:

S class streamlined locos and The 4D. I couldn't think of 4 maybe that's a good thing.

Hmmm - you'll have no idea about this, either:

* 58 Class 4-8-2's

* The unique 72 class B-B

There, that makes the other two from Australia.

BTW, Aussie_Rail, while I fully agree about the streamlined S's, you must have been the only railfan in Melbourne who actually liked 4D (judging by various threads upon the subject on RailPage)! :)

  • GT3
  • LMS Turbomotive (in original turbine powered form)
  • The complete Bennie Railplane demonstration track and car.
  • One of the Listowell and Ballybunion mono-locos. The diesel replica is nice, but not as nice as a real one.

I was tempted to say Kestral as well, but while It would be excellent if it was still around, it isn't as interesting looking as any of the above, being essentially a smoothed off, more powerful class 47.

Theres also other narrow gauge things I'd like to see, Leek and Manifold Kitson anyone?
