Another is services to Stirling, Inverness and Aberdeen at York, Newcastle and elsewhere are all advertised as 'Via Edinburgh'. This is not to clear up confusion about which route these trains take, it is just to make it clearer that these are the services for Edinburgh.

At Edinburgh, I'm sure the Highland Chieftain is announced as "via Stirling".

As are the late night Scotrail services to Perth.

It always says Reading via Richmond on WAT-Reading trains. Surely the Kingston loop is onlya temporary route? Or is there another way? Perhaps via Chiswick..

There are a few services that run via Hounslow every day.

There is a South Western Railway service every weekday at 5 (unless this has changed) that is a stopping service from London Waterloo to Southampton Central via Guildford, hence the use of Winchester.

I know during times of disruption when the line is closed at Winchester or somewhere like that, services usually go via Guildford too (really lengthy diversion) and quite often on the weekends, the service is diverted via Staines and Hounslow towards London Waterloo only making a stop at Staines.

EDIT: Seems to be at 7 instead now, but I know this is worked using two or three 450s via Guildford and Haslemere. http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/W38390/2017/09/13/advanced

At Havant, we get "the xx:yy South Western Railway service to London Waterloo via Guildford" announced on the platform.

I understand the need for this up to Hilsea - I can't think of a usable route from Havant to Waterloo other than Guildford? (Whilst the trackwork exists to go to via Southern territory I can't imagine it ever happening)

Probably just to absolutely distinguish between services to Victoria via Barnham so that people don't assume they follow the same route up to Clapham Junction.

In my experience, Victoria services from Havant used to be announced via Horsham, or via Worthing/Haywards Heath. The only reason I can think of for the Waterloo via Guildford announcement is to totally be clear it isn't via Eastleigh (ex-Portsmouth)

"Eastbourne and Littlehampton via Worthing" always annoys me, because the CIS announcement sometimes phrases it as if both Eastbourne and Littlehampton will be accessed via Worthing. For obvious geographical reasons, this is not the case, and such trains instead run to Haywards Heath where they divide...

Service from Portsmouth to Cardiff are advertised as via Salisbury with no through diversions having been run in my knowledge. I'm sure they could go via Guildford/Basingstoke, onto Reading and along the GWML.

It's possibly that it's highlighting a significant interchange point for services towards the Exeter direction. Just sort of re-inforces the advice that's probably come up already in journey planners.

The automatic announcements for the Cross City line through Birmingham always states 'Longbridge/Redditch via Birmingham New Street'.

Seems quite unnecessary as its impossible to reach Longbridge or Redditch without passing through New Street - assuming you don't start reversing and taking ridiculously convoluted routes. Plus, there's no reason to suspect that a commuter service would seek to avoid the biggest hub for rail journeys in that part of the UK.

Probably to tell those less knowledgeable that even though the destination on the front of the train is for Longbridge it will call at Birmingham New Street

It was via Horsham or Hove.

The via Guildford/Basingstoke makes sense when it is between the harbour and Hilsea. Beyond that point it seems a fairly moot point. I can't remember how far up the Via Guildford lasts.

Recent engineering works in the Portsmouth area have resulted in Havant to London Waterloo Via Eastleigh on a number of occasions. After Havant I see no point in Via Guildford.

At Guildford the same trains are advertised as via Woking which makes sense given the variety of different routes available from Guildford to London.

And hypothetically, given both platforms at Havant are bi-directional, there is chance that both could occur, although this is a sleep-deprived thought.

If I remember correctly, both Waterloo services were leaving from platform 1 at Havant, as both of them clashed with Southern services which were using Platform 2.

Yeah, I've often heard people asking for the "Birmingham train", or clarifying that the Longbridge/Redditch train is the Birmingham train, etc. Given how few people from Cross City North go south of University (and presumably vice versa, they empty pretty heavily at New Street northbound) making it clear that the train goes to New Street (where a sizeable majority of people are headed) is a no-brainer.
