Announcement correctness

On Northern when sat at Shipley the announcement is often heard along the lines "The next stop is Leeds. This train terminates here."

I've seen someone half asleep hear "This train terminates here", jump up, leap off the train, look around and just manage to leap back on as the hustle alarm sounded. A "there" might have avoided this.

I could imagine this happening a lot where people get confused.. the announcements on the 333s should be altered a little to prevent it saying 'This train terminates here' at the 2nd to last stop. It does that every time I've used them. Eg at Cononley the boards also changed over to ''Alight here''. ''Take all belongings''

My personal bugbear is the current FGW favourite, which says: "The next train at platform X for the....."

To me it sounds like two announcements have collided with one another! Either tell us the next train IS whatever or tell us platform x FOR whatever, is there any need to mix the two together?!

Oh, god, yes - from a grammar perspective, that is the one that irritates me most.

"Platform and the train" on Southern always sounds weird, but I can't really hold anything against it. More irritating is them telling you which coach number it is when the train doesn't divide. I'm quite happy with them doing so when the train *is* going to divide, because it's actually useful, but saying "this is coach number 1 of 4" every stop on a Southampton Central to London Victoria train is rather irritating...

"We are now approaching the final destination for this service" always made me smile - isn't destination by default the final one, so why add the word final too?

Anywhere else on the service is just a stop surely?

In fact I've noticed SWT have stopped saying final destination, maybe someone pointed it out, but I think there are still some TOCS out there who still say it.

In my opinion announcements should be as short, clearly spoken and as concise as possible.

"Passengers are request to use common sense while travelling on the railways" often seems like it is needed though.

Idly points out that one has been approaching one's destination ever since leaving one's starting point!

Oh and be grateful you are called passengers, as given half a chance you'll be a customer!

I get annoyed with auto announcement when the next stop is Wycombe Platform 3. It goes 'please mind the gap between the train and the platform when you are leaving the train.' That is too long, it should be just Ming the gap between the train and the platform.
