It is bugging me!! Southern choose the latter

If you're on the train, then 'Please mind the gap between the train and the platform' seems more logical.

In France, they effectively say 'Please mind the gap when getting off the train'.

Although in the grand scheme of things, let's be honest, it probably doesn't matter :P

Damn helping those pesky hard of seeing people wanting to know that they are on the correct train to the correct destination on the correct service provider... Grrrr.

I get bugged by having to alight from the front x carriages due to a short platform. The platform was there first so its the train that is long, and delays caused by congestion. Nope delays are a sympton of congestion, something else caused the congestion.

Southern do remind all customers not to alight before the train has come to a complete stop, and customers should take care of the gap between platform and train doors as this is an accident area. One thing that always bugs me is the Croydon Tramlink's '
"Change there for" compared to TOCs' "Change here for" when announcing upcoming interchanges.

By the time they've said that, and announced station stops etc, along with the coach number, which will have been interupted for another announcement, then they wouldn't get it all said on an 'all stations' Brighton to West Worthing service.

The announcements need to be short but concise.

"We are now approaching the final destination for this service" always made me smile - isn't destination by default the final one, so why add the word final too?

Anywhere else on the service is just a stop surely?

In fact I've noticed SWT have stopped saying final destination, maybe someone pointed it out, but I think there are still some TOCS out there who still say it.

In my opinion announcements should be as short, clearly spoken and as concise as possible.

"Passengers are request to use common sense while travelling on the railways" often seems like it is needed though.

Even if C2C did run buses, boats and aeroplanes, I can't think that there are many passengers who don't realise that it is a train they have just boarded.

It spends on how you look at this announcement I suppose. Id read it as '...this | c2c rail | service' which makes more sense than '...this | c2c | rail service.'

The Tramlink one seems to make much more sense.

On Northern when sat at Shipley the announcement is often heard along the lines "The next stop is Leeds. This train terminates here."

I've seen someone half asleep hear "This train terminates here", jump up, leap off the train, look around and just manage to leap back on as the hustle alarm sounded. A "there" might have avoided this.

Lots of superfluous words in there - an important safety announcement, a complete stop. It could be trimmed down to: "This is a safety announcement. The doors will not open until the train has stopped. Please be aware of the gap between the platform and train doors. Any customers who require assistance should ask for a member of staff." Still too many unnecessary words, but better.


One that really bugs me is "the train now standing on platform...", where I think the train is standing at the platform.

I'd certainly be worried if the train was on the platform

I've heard it announced 'the train alongside platform x' at Waterloo.
So if its alongside platform x, is at at actually platform y.

Probably why in Switzerland they advise passengers which track (Gleis) the train departs from, rather than platform (Perron).

My personal bugbear is the current FGW favourite, which says: "The next train at platform X for the....."

To me it sounds like two announcements have collided with one another! Either tell us the next train IS whatever or tell us platform x FOR whatever, is there any need to mix the two together?!
