Oh my God. This, I have never understood! I'm guessing its a southern (with a small "s") phenomenon, because I cannot think of any reason why its nessecary!
That's the usual. If i'm there, and depending on the circumstances you sometimes get a real voice. lolI noticed text-to-speech being used at Newark Castle the other week.

Does anyone have an idea who does the automated voice on the 172's on the Snow Hill Line?
Her voice really annoys me.
It is pretty much a robot, the majority of Southeastern stations now use a text-to-speech based system.
My my. I've never seen that before! It looks quite good though; I'll have to have a proper look through it!
Why be a miserable, faceless automaton when you can be informative with a sense of reality.![]()
As a former station announcer I've actually met "Anne" a couple of times. At the time she was head of ATOS Origin's railway software department and they used to invite several announcers from round the country to come down to Nottingham for feedback on their software. Sadly I don't recall her real name, but she seemed less than impressed that the Piccadilly announcers had christened the voice as 'Britney'
At my mums local station (hackbridge) it has a little trumpet noise which makes me smile =) It does the whole HACKbridge, this is HACKbridge.
Have you heard the gong sound at East Croydon when the departure boards make a "correction"?Oh, the trumpet sound is actually quite amazing! I used it as a text-notification ringtone on my phone for a while! Heard it at East Croydon on Saturday.
I worry it might not be around for too much longer though, as it seems to come from the yellow display screens themselves, and these might be getting replaced at East Croydon.

I like it when a driver explains a delay as being down to 'that idiot that held the doors open and nearly took the whole train out of service' or similar.
I wish more would do that, if only to show commuters that many delays are caused by them.

I had my first flight with Ryanair last week, and had to laugh at the triumphant trumpet call broadcast when we landed, on time.
The accompanying announcement goes on to brag that they are the most punctual airline in Europe and lose the least bags, or some such stats.
How would that kind of thing go down on Merseyrail (often the most punctual TOC) every time you reached Liverpool Central?
Do you mean the high-pitched tone ("EEE")? Not exactly a gong. I think there's still another chime, but I haven't heard it for a few weeks!
