I like the fact that it says Anne is an "ATOS employee" - has anyone ever met her? She'll have near national fame soon...

I've seen a picture of the person who does our tram announcements though :0
Or at least its claimed that's who she is. I imagine it would be our version of the lottery man - or Dave Lamb (the Come Dine With Me narrator) speaking to you in the street!

Ah ha! This was the announcement about car parking!

"Vehicles parked at unauthorised points may be clamped or removed without warning. Short and long stay parking is available at this station."

Don't recall hearing that recently at Manchester though.

Oh my God. This, I have never understood! I'm guessing its a southern (with a small "s") phenomenon, because I cannot think of any reason why its nessecary!

After seeing how reliable the automated announcements on board the 317s are, you may change your mind!

I noticed text-to-speech being used at Newark Castle the other week.

That's the usual. If i'm there, and depending on the circumstances you sometimes get a real voice. lol

Highlights of mine have seen passengers intending to catch the Up London in a morning to use "all available doors, and not herd like sheep." or when a train is delayed and i can explain the reason then pass that info onto the passengers. "The delay to your train was caused by a brake fault; but i'm sure it's safe to travel on."

Why be a miserable, faceless automaton when you can be informative with a sense of reality.

I like it when a driver explains a delay as being down to 'that idiot that held the doors open and nearly took the whole train out of service' or similar.

I wish more would do that, if only to show commuters that many delays are caused by them.

If its LM the I'd say Julie Berry - she does the 350s and also does Merseyrail and the LU Piccadilly Line.

It is pretty much a robot, the majority of Southeastern stations now use a text-to-speech based system.

Southeastern are unhappy with her inability to pronounce quite a few stations, Anne is slowly being rolled out and has already replaced Robotnic at Kidbrooke, Strood, Rochester, Chatham & Gillingham to name a few.

Has anybody noticed that Anne at Piccadilly knows the correct Welsh pronunciation for "Llandudno" - except when it's part of "Llandudno Junction"?

I was involved in testing the Croydon trams when they first arrived in UK, complete with a voice announcement system which had been programmed in the best Austrian and made a total hash of several of the stop names.

I've noticed that roger (the southeastern one) actually starts out dull, then seems to get happier and happier, and at one point starts rolling his r's.

At my mums local station (hackbridge) it has a little trumpet noise which makes me smile =) It does the whole HACKbridge, this is HACKbridge.

That is the older system used at stations such as Tulse Hill, Clapham Junction and London Waterloo and is in my opinion the best station announcing system. Usually voiced by Phil Sayer and Celia Drummond.

That must be so strange... to hear her speak using normal sentences. I suppose voice artists are professionals and can vary how they sound greatly... but, could you tell by listening it was her!?

I worry it might not be around for too much longer though, as it seems to come from the yellow display screens themselves, and these might be getting replaced at East Croydon.

Do you mean the high-pitched tone ("EEE")? Not exactly a gong. I think there's still another chime, but I haven't heard it for a few weeks!

You might be thinking of the three gongs for 'train is ready to depart'. Sometimes its a bell, sometimes a beep, but its the same three tones.

Our buses have Helen Mayhew from BBC Jazz FM providing the announcements. She did all of them in one sitting!

An amusing one is the announcer at Milton Keynes who sounds like (or used to sound like) Boycie from Only Fools and Horses. Not sure if he's still there though.

That one on FCC sounds a right miserable cow.

The accompanying announcement goes on to brag that they are the most punctual airline in Europe and lose the least bags, or some such stats.

How would that kind of thing go down on Merseyrail (often the most punctual TOC) every time you reached Liverpool Central?

No, it sounds actually like a gong, but I haven't heard it since about 6 months ago.

Talking to a guy from Telent the other day at Manchester Victoria. He said they will be installing Digital Doris in the not to distant future.

Everything that is there now is being took out and replaced, quite a job!

I always imagine that Manchester Piccadilly is how it will be in Orwell's 1984. A hollow voice with no soul telling you what you can't do every 5 minutes. It's quite depressing.
