This is the time and place where I remind all concerned that RTT is by no means official software, and how it chooses to display reasons for cancellations is entirely down to the third-party developers...

(...not that I don’t approve - I think it is a nice “Easter egg” feature!)

well let's think it through logically... what happens in Autumn? the trees decide they don't want their leaves anymore and the nasty trees drop them all over the lines... perhaps someone was trying to avoid the rail industry being a laughing stock for having problems with leaves on the line?

Indeed. Here is the 'official' reason for the part cancellation of that service:

Tyrell Check said:
12:35 Sheffield to Huddersfield due 13:50 will be terminated at Barnsley. It will no longer call at Dodworth, Silkstone Common, Penistone, Denby Dale, Shepley, Stocksmoor, Brockholes, Honley, Berry Brow, Lockwood and Huddersfield. It will be starting late from Sheffield and is expected to be 11 minutes late. This is due to slippery rails.

My favourite was on the London Underground: "Journeys are being delayed due to late running"

Basically during the day some heavy delays have been steadily building up due to leaffall slippage and it's an attempt to get the service back to something like normal before the evening peak, this particular unit forming the 1708 off Huddersfield.

I got a similar explanation from platform staff at South Kensington - which actually made some sense.

It was a wet Sunday and every family in London seemed to have decided to head for the museums. Crowded trains, extended dwell times, widening gaps. As the gaps widened the crowding got worse, the delays longer and the gaps ... wider. And as the gaps got wider, the crowding ...

(Repeat ad infinitum)

"Delays due to late running" is probably as easy and accurate as any other brief explanation.

I know what they mean by it, but it seems like a tautology.

Interesting in this case, it still ran from Barnsley to Huddersfield but ECS via Wakefield Kirkgate, meaning it was able to start back from Huddersfield near enough right time.

That's happened a few times lately, curtailing at Penistone (to Huddersfield) or Meadowhall (to Sheffield) are the usual ways of trying to this route back on time.

Its the section of route between Penistone and Huddersfield where the worst of the slippery rails occurs, so of course running empty via WKK gets round that.

My only issue is why can't they run 'in service' via WKK so any Huddersfield bound passengers don't have to wait 45 mins or so at Barnsley (assuming the next service is on time!)

Indeed, well aware that it's due to leaf fall (using this line 3 or more days a week) just never seen that reason stated before!

I posted this on another thread querying an obscure RTT cancellation code and it applies here too...
The definition of the codes shown on RTT do not correlate with the real meaning of the codes given in the Delay Attribution Board’s “Rules and Principles”, for example I2 is actually AC/DC Trip. In any case delay attribution is a far, far more complex beast than most outside the industry realise. Delay attribution is an internal rail industry process which just happens to occasionally leak into the outside world through open data feeds; fundamentally it isn’t meant for public consumption. You just have to trust* that the vague reasons given on RTT are correct and that the professionals who spend all day every day allocating each delay minute, full and part cancellation know what they are doing even if it appears odd and arcane from outside looking in.

*get it?

TLDR: Realtimetrains mangles internal information not intended for public use and puts it out for all to see.

Indeed, they should really run it in service, and indeed let people heading to the stations nearest Huddersfield to stay on board and travel on the return journey.

Don't they run the RHTT train on the Penistone line?
As far as I know they do. It used to run from the Sheffield end and turn back at Lockwood due to the viaduct at Paddock being too weak for locos, but a decade or so ago it was repaired and can now take the RHTT at a maximum speed of 10mph.

IIRC it runs from York Thrall Europa in the wee hours of the morning.

It could do with running on the Aire & Wharfe lines too, the 321/322s in particular are starting to struggle but even the 333s aren't immune at the moment.

We had a thread on this back in November 2013, in which the creator of the Realtimmetrains website replied: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/funny-train-cancellation.92941/

(Also @AWK @AshBod if you can edit your post to include a text quote/description that would be great; I know blind people read these forums who are unable to see images, so rely on text alternatives being provided. Thanks :))

it does: Skipton is the furthest south point on the Carlisle circuit. Skipton is also the furtherst north point on the York>Leeds>Gascoigne Wood> Skipton> Ilkey>Leeds> Bradford>Halifax>Knaresborough>York Circuit

Foster Square doesn't seem to get treated

I know there used to be paths for it, its just that I haven't seen any recently nor heard the distinctive sound of the pair of 20s heading up & down the valley. The old paths used to have them passing through Baildon around 05:00 - 05:30, when I'm usually getting up.

For some reason the RHTT didn't run over the Penistone branch, probably what's led to these issues. It's a pretty bad route for adhesion at the best of times combined with some fairly significant gradients, I'm not surprised there's been delays.
