Out of interest I just looked at the peak service from Bexleyheath to Charing Cross which I used to use in the slam door era. I think the time table is worse, particularly evening peaks leaving CX , looks like every 30 mins, not so bad going up in the morning. From what im remember the CX service was very frequent in the peaks. Cannon Street only every 30 mins too, which I think could have been more frequent, but can't quite recall . OK no Vic services back then but here was BF and HV in peaks. sorry for thread drift !

The Bexleyheath and Sidcup lines did have a pretty basic service until the late 2000s.

The Woolwich line went up to 6tph in the 80s or early 90s I think, then up to 8tph in the early 2000s around the time the DLR was extended to Greenwich and Lewisham if I recall correctly.

But 8tph at the time was at Woolwich Arsenal and Charlton, Abbey Wood was 6tph as was Greenwich, the rest of line was at 4tph until 2009.

I never used the Woolwich line much so not very familiar . I remember morning peaks up to Charing Cross on Bexleyheath line there was train about every 10 mins approx. Of course no off peaks to Cannon Street at all.

Are more passengers using St Johns these days, with a frequent service being available ?

You’re correct there were no off peak Cannon Streets from the Bexleyheath line in the 90s/00s, however there was an odd semi fast Cannon Street to Plumstead service which called at Lewisham and Blackheath so those from the Bexleyheath route could change at either station for a CS train.

I think passenger numbers at St. John’s aren’t very high, they maybe much higher than they used to be from the 80s-00s, pre covid it was 8tph, yet every time I passed it the station never seemed overly busy, still as quiet as ever.

Off topic, but what a little later became known nationally as the Lewisham train crash in 1957 was known locally at the time as the St John's train crash, as the station was only a short way north of Park Junction, where it occurred.

My grandfather was in it. He survived however.

That must have been horrific for him!

My Great Uncle was almost going to catch the 17:18 from Charing Cross…that was the one he regularly used to travel home from work on. But by stroke of luck, he finished up a few minutes late at work that evening, and got to Charing Cross to have the ticket barrier shut in his face. This was the stationary EMU that was hit by the Steam express.

It’s one of my local stations still. In the post Covid world…quite a few people seem to get on the trains in the morning, and a fair few alight from down trains in the evening!!

Weekends and during the day, it’s not completely dead…quite a few local people take to the trains from there, the need to change at London Bridge if they want to go to Waterloo East or Charing Cross is the thing though.

I wonder how many of the passengers at St Johns use it solely because it lacks ticket barriers (compared to Lewisham) and they don't have to pay?

St Johns - usage def seems to have come on a bit. The area has skyrocketed in terms of popularity - gentrification yes but also Goldsmiths and the area itself being more desirable for students to live closer in. NX/NXG even more so. Plus the tail end of Lewisham developments too. Ripe for more intensification, 8tph stations should be surrounded by towers :)

I remember Dartford-Victoria via Bexleyheath as a slamdoor service in the early 90s.

And yes, Plumstead services used to feature. I recall some from Victoria, which I think were ostensibly Millennium Dome extras. Not sure what happened to those paths, but maybe that could come back as a way of Lewisham-Woolwich staying alive - esp if beyond Abbey Wood wasn't needed.

They started out as Dome feeders, these had odd stopping patterns that changed, initially they called at Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye, skipping Nunhead, then later on the service was an express from Victoria to Lewisham, then Blackheath, Charlton, Woolwich Arsenal and Plumstead.

The service lingered on for a while after the Dome closed until late 2001/early 2002 when it was rerouted to Cannon Street, while the Gillingham fasts were diverted to Greenwich.

Are there plans to axe the Lewisham-Woolwich route? I’ve not heard of this, and I don’t think they’ll run regular Victoria trains from the Woolwich line aside from the odd engineering weekend at London Bridge.

It's actually worth read, I wont say the station that was in first place but 2nd place was Hither Green, but... was also voted 3rd place in the best station category on a different blog on the same site (they explain why).

Anyone who has used Southeastern services through Lewisham will have asked the question to themselves - why does St John's exist? Well, maybe not the people who actually use it, and that number is actually steadily growing every year. Apparently St John's (which was named after a church that was somehow built after it) is the product of a furious squabble between South Eastern Railway and the London Chatham and Dover Railway. LCDR had opened a station called Lewisham Road, on their now closed Greenwich Park branch, so SER struck back with St John's - and we're all here now to bask in their total, and utter victory. To the victor go the spoils, and the spoils in this case was St John's. The fact that there are theories as to why St John's exists says it all - we don't need theories for Lewisham or New Cross, their existence is self-evident, but St John's? No, there must be an ulterior motive behind St John's construction other than 'convenience'. This might surprise some people, but when it opened it had, brace yourself, three lengthy island platforms. Admittedly two of those platforms served one track, but still, three. Wow. Anyhow, our theory as to why St John's is so high on this list is that, though it's actually more used than quite a few of the stations included on our original shortlist, it suffers from the fact that more people know that St John's isn't well-used because of it's location between Lewisham and New Cross.

That’s quite a good article actually, with a bit of humour thrown in! I’m slightly surprised Queens Road Peckham didn’t get a mention (although personally I like it). Crofton Park is another one; possibly the most neglected station on the Catford Loop?

Nothing from/to Charing Cross has called at St. Johns for some time. I think the SE "rounders" are still the ones to call there. It's a bit of an odd station, a victim of the railway geography and the behemoth of Lewisham just down the road.

Also Eltham Station is hideous. Replaced lovely Eltham Well Hall. Slade Green and Belvedere, used to be grim too.
