Yes, there are "plans" to wire the TPE line through Leeds - my comment was about the fact that Lancashire won't need any 158s "back" (since its definitely getting more electrification/ additional units in the cascades). Really, the "Lancashire" 158s are now in Scotland anyway, and not in Yorkshire.

I was about to say the 158s were for Liverpool - Manchester Airport, but that'll be going over to EMU operation when electrified so there'd be no point repatriating them.

The Sheffield - Hull/ Scarborough service runs via Goole, which I doubt would be electrified? There are enough question marks over the swing bridge at Selby (meaning that Leeds - Selby - Hull may not be wired?)...

Ah OK I didn't realise it went via Goole.

What is best for 158s in the North long term depends what is done with 185s after TPE electrification. If they were refurbished with standard class only, more seats and less tables then they would be ideal for the Buxton line, while if they maintain a FC section they would be more suited to the Blackpool to Scarborough service (as it would be then) directly replacing 158s.

Southport to Manchester Airport, Manchester to Chester, Manchester to Buxton and the Cumbrian Coast lines would be the most suited west side services to 158s after electrification. OK not routes 158s were designed for but neither are the East side routes: Leeds-Nottingham and Sheffield-East Yorkshire are more routes that 156s were designed for, while the other 158 routes on the East side are really routes 150 or even Pacers were designed for.

The 185s should just stay with TPE and run the non-electrified routes, when the 170s go away they can cover TPE South, non electrified TPE NW and have some other select routes in the north added, perhaps Liverpool - Norwich and/or some Calder Valley services.

I've been told LIV - NOR needs 12 diagrams, theres 8 on the Windermere/Barrow route...

This could possibly split at Bolton to combine with a southport service. (Saves a path through Manchester)

Then theres TPE South that needs 8, add in the Calder Valley semi-fasts and thats pretty much all the 185 fleet used up, (Could also run on BPN - SCA via Burnley?)

But they should remain all within one franchise, and have that franchise use them on the expressey routes around the North, Liverpool - Norwich does seem a sensible one IMO. Doubled up all day on the reminent diesel routes in TPE and LIV - NOR is the whole fleet used...

Northern run Doncaster - Goole - Hull, Hull Trains run Doncaster - Selby - Hull, dunno if that was the confusion?

So, if this idea for TPE "North" electrification ever makes it off the wishlist then the HT service from London could be electric (freeing up some 180s)

One might wonder what Hull Trains would use for such a service...

Since there is no standard 125/140mph EMU around at the moment...

Surely the 390 is the standard 125/140mph EMU at the moment? Or even the 395 (with suitable modifications for long distance inter-city running)?

180's aren't exactly standard are they ?

HT are only using them basically because they were told to by the DfT they didn't order them from new. Indeed they originally ordered 222s (which were the standard 125mph DEMU at the time) which I'm sure they'd love to still have after all the issues that 180s are giving them!

Well boys,
i was speaking to a ticketman at Horsforth station and he told me who's Northern's successor will be.........DRUM ROLE...........................FIRST!!

My word there is some kiddie wibble on this thread but this takes the prize! Yes a bloke who works in a minor station ( and will be quite a long way down the corporate food chain) KNOWs who is going to get the franchise award.

Clearly both you and him have no idea about a tender or a franchise. It may well be First, but it wont have been decided yet!

Personally, i think Northen do a good job with what they have. I wouldnt be upset to see them retain the franchise. I also think Northern and TPE will change in some way. Not sure how yet, but i expect changes to the franchises.

I was travelling from Manchester Victoria-Chorley at 3pm. 2 carriages, at least 40 people standing. It's the same every time I get on the train. The new franchise need to invest. For the service they give I will die if they are allowed to extend the franchise.

Personally I would like Serco/Abellio to retain the franchise, the atmosphere is more relaxed than in FirstGroup days, they let us get on and do our jobs alot more, They don't promise miracles and keep our ancient fleet running and are providing more services with excellent results, I still have mental Scars from wearing Check Green Jackets and hope never to see those days again! lol

Maybe they should find a company who promises to clean trains. First and Arriva couldn't manage it when they had the RRNW and RRNE franchises while Serco and Abelllio can't manage it now.

You can't clean most of Northerns units as they are held together by the dirt ;)

It seems a little odd that the only service available at the southern end of the Humber Bridge offers only 9 trains per day and no winter Sunday service at all. It is the scarcity of a service that leads potential passengers to find alternatives which, in turn, gives NR a reason to claim there is no demand and consequently withdraw services completely

To be fair, the building of the Humber Bridge and the withdrawal of the ferry in 1981 might have had something to do with the present service provision.
