Advance Ticket - can I get refund due to tube strike?

I've booked advance return tickets from Paddington to Bristol for Wednesday 12th but if tube strike is on next week as well, it will be hard to get to Paddington (from Essex). In the circumstances could I get a refund on the tickets?

Ask the company you purchased the ticket from. If your ticket includes travel by tube I would expect you to get a refund, if not, you may be relying on 'a gesture of good will'.

Thanks - I booked through East Coast but tickets are from Paddinton to Bristol - no tube. I'll see what they say.

Don't want to go much earlier. 10.00 from Paddington would be just OK but any later and I'd miss event I'm going to.

OK, you are still covered in the event of delays, providing you allow the minimum interchange time.

However officially, as you are commencing your journey using Oyster PAYG, you will need to queue at Paddington to get your ticket "endorsed".

If you were using a paper ticket (e.g. a Travelcard), you could simply board the next train.

I don't agree with that policy, but that's what it is, unfortunately.

Sorry that is not a valid itinerary, so you are not covered in the event of delays. The last train from Upminster to form a booked connection the 0802.

As the itinerary was never a valid one, and as the reasons are out of control of the Train Companies, I do not believe you are entitled to a refund. However discretion may be shown, you can ask.

If you are happy to give it a go, you need to be at Upminster in time to make the 0802. Providing you do that, you are covered, this would hopefully give you 63 minutes to cross London for your booked train, or 93 minutes until the 10:00 train, which should be enough time. I'll leave it to others to advise on possible alternative routes to get from Fenchurch St to Paddington.

I'll see what the strike situation is next week and decide whether to ask East Cost for refund (which I accept is down to their goodwill), or give it a go in which case I'll get the 8.02 and maybe buy a travelcard (usually takes 60 minutes Upminster to Paddington by the way. I use several routes but all take about the same time).

Is the problem mainly to do with an inability to do Fenchurch Street - Paddington without the Tube?
Surely you could use a bus, taxi, or - God forbid - a Boris bike?

c2c train to Fenchurch Street, walk to Moorgate and Hammersmith & City line to Paddington.

Should be do-able next week as the H&C was running a service every 10 mins from Moorgate today. (You could also try the shorter walk to Aldgate and pick up a Metropolitan line train and change en-route.)
