Active Network Rail tip sites

There used to be sites where railway building debris/spent ballast was dumped.

I know of two. Conington South tip between Peterborough & Huntingdon on the ECML.
Godstone Landfill site on the Rehill Tonbridge line. Both are closed.

A friend has been watching Network Rail demolishing an asbestos ridden control hut at the carriage sidings north of Euston on the down side.(are the sidings being extended?)

He sent me a picture of the debris loaded into a 66 top & tailed freight train parked in the sidings this Sunday morning.

Where will it go? Do Network Rail still have active tips?

Eastleigh gets a lot of rubbish & spoil trains from the Southern. There’s a firm that cleans and sorts spent ballast and it leaves by the lorry load.

There is one at March on what used to be the marshalling yards and also at Tyne Yard, but I don,t think actually much ends up in tips these days as its usually sorted. Ballast is cleaned and maybe reused or sold for hardcore etc. wood will be sold as will be scrap steel. So in the end there will not be much to go to a tip which will also cost money to tip there these days.
Not like the days of old when anything was just tipped and buried.

There's an article about the operations at Whitemoor here- in summary, they try to avoid dumping ballast, instead taking dirty ballast to Whitemoor to clean and recycle.

The West Somerset Railway have an arrangement whereby network rail dump all their spent ballast at a site in the Norton Fitzwarren triangle, where it is cleaned by a local contractor and sold on, win win solution for all concerned !

Network Rail don't have any "tips" - they haven't for years. "Tipping" stuff costs a fortune in Landfill tax.

Materials Handling Depots - Trains will be loaded at these depots and run to worksites & they reprocess & recycle incoming waste from work sites. They are at Crewe, Westbury & Whitemoor ( which is the biggest and best equipped) The National Track Materials Recycling Centre at Whitemoor is obviously rail connected. It is massive and it does what it says on the tin!

Local Distribution Centres (LDC) are rail connected stockpiles of engineering materials. The bulk trains are formed, loaded and dispatched from here to various worksites. They are at Millerhill, Kingmoor, Tyne, Doncaster, Toton, Crewe, Bescot, Whitemoor, Westbury, Eastleigh and Parkeston. There is also Hinksey that is used from time to time. Some of these ( and i cant recall which) accept used ballast do some track ballast recyling.

You have also got the High Out Put Depots which are the home of of the High Out Put machines. They are at Sevington, Taunton, Parkeston, Whitemoor, Crewe, Toton, Tyne, Kingmoor. These need to be rail connected but usage fluctuates as required by the areas in which the trains operate.

The idea is to reuse or recycle as much as possible and chuck away as little as possible. The link provided by @jopsuk is as good as any on the kind of work that goes on.

No, the roads mentioned in the image were at Camden sidings.

Sorry my fault, in the image shown is the stops at Camden sidings, the building being demolished was redundant I believe. So a couple of roads at Camden sidings were to be extended as earlier mentioned.

This was told to me by a contractor wiring on the earlier depot lighting scheme.

Backing out roads are for HS2 construction traffic, as will P17 eventually. Camden CS are getting extended as are the up sidings to the north of the low side platforms.

Hunslet Tip in Leeds used to be active until about 1996.
The branch from Neville hill, saw a couple of loaded ballast trains a day to be unloaded, screened and the hardcore used for roadwork or construction around Leeds.

Is it possible to sort & reuse ballast? I realise the spoil from things like the HOBC will probably only be good for roadstone or hardcore, but general spoil from renewals surely contains a percentage of good stone?

That's why they call the machines ballast cleaners with a percentage being directly returned to the roadbed.

yes - That is why it is graded and sorted. It gets used for all kinds of things.
