No train driver is an idiot
No train driver is an idiot
Myboysam - congratulations and welcome to the club - I must say I'm impressed with 4 months from initial assessment until start date - I was 21 months myself...
jobo7 - look for some relevant info specific to the depot you will be based at - first & last trains, no of drivers, routes covered etc - if you can speak to a driver based there, they may be able to help you
Cheers, H
I cant give a definitive answer about what you should be looking up as I did endless research on Scotrail and never got asked a question about them. From what I can gather it depends on the depot and the manager as many people have said they went for interviews at Glasgow and they were asked stuff that never came up in mine. It was more competency based around what I would do in this or that situation and how do I think I would react if this or that happened. Do you drink/smoke/play football at weekends etc and how are you getting to work for a 4am start bearing in mind they dont issue car permits at Edinburgh and all kinds of things like that.
Would I also be right in saying that whilst one can get a one time experience driving trains on a heritage line, at no time would they be allowed to drive unsupervised?
EE EL O, How do you know that driving a train is "relativley easy" when you have not driven one?
Also you say that working 6 days a week is hard going due to manual labour. But what you dont know is working as a train driver is also hard going due to the high concentration levels needed throuhgout your shift from begining to end and thats where most drivers earn there money by being able to deal with different varying situations such as tiredness after working 9 days in a row due to booked sundays.
Train driving is a rewarding job with great job satisfaction. The training is first class and sets you up for a decent career if you do what you have been trained to do.
Drivers dont get paid 40 odd grand for it being "easy".

Jobo, get yourself to the depot and get your face seen. Its a big help and you never know you may get a heads up on some questions.
Good luck.
When I say I work hard manual Labour do you think I go around with my head up my Ar** too. you try wiring up a fuse box while day dreaming with
your hands blue from the cold and cant see a thing except for a torch light
and try not to get any from 100 wires mixed up or the house could go on fire.
I dont know but I think that just might involve a tad bit of concentration.
