Aberdeen to Penzance Additional??

Looking at Random Ticket prices for Derby to Penance on Scotrail, I'm getting a 0328 Derby to Penzance, does not look like an error, can anyone confirm what's going on? Are XC running an additional service?

It's exactly 12 hours offset from the real ABD–PNZ, and shares its headcode 1V60, so looks like an inputting cockup.

It's also showing as being delayed by signalling problems at about 6am tomorrow (nice of them to be able to warn us of that in advance :P), whereas today's 1V60 is being delayed by emergency engineering works.

Currently showing "no report" on live departure boards until Bristol Parkway, where it is predicted to depart 29 late. How odd!

They would be after Berwick, but probably open from Bristol Parkway onwards.

Newcastle closes after the last train of the night gets in at around 1am. Keeps the drunks from getting into the station as well to sleep off their hangovers.

That's brilliant. I bet it's on the departure boards for most of the stations too until about Birmingham where station staff would surely notice an unusual train or they'll just leave it and it'll show "Delayed" until someone realizes!

Nice to see they've brought back the cross country sleeper service (when did that last run? Going by timetables I've got, it'd certainly gone by '89 but existed in the early 60's), too bad they didn't advertise it in advance though!

I think Virgin Crosscountry ran a non-sleeper overnight service in the early 2000s.

Surely the error is someone not knowing their 24 hour clock? There is an 0820 ABD-PNZ which calls at Derby at 1528 so maybe someone's put it in the system as running 12 hours earlier than it actually is.

if I hadnt read this thread I would have believed it as at round 23:13 last night an HST Thundered down the ECML past Portobello JN, the time incidentally that the morning voyager goes down.

I couldnt think what it was and reached the conclusion that the ABD - LDS was badly delayed but never bothered to check.

This small incident makes me think - would an overnight train, that's not a sleeper, actually work on a route like this?

OR would it work better as more limited stop and possibly shorter journey? Something like Edinburgh, Newcastle, Darlington, York, Leeds, Wakefield, Sheffield, Derby, Birmingham, Bristol Temple Meads, Taunton, Exeter, Plymouth?

If it called at some of the major cities on route, then I think it would probably do alright. Linking up with the TPE services to Manchester Airport which currently only run to/from York in the small hours would be a bonus. Plus it would also compete with the long distance coach travel. However, you'd have to find a way of keeping the drunks off which is easier said than done.

If a propper train i.e loco and coaches or HST ran I would use it, particularly as the NX consfssionarry disabled fare scheme is nolonger funded meaning the previously attractive 21:30 departure from Edinburgh ariving Birmingham 06:45 has lost its edge.

Theres stil megabus from Glasgow but its arival time in brum is, urm, not great.

there would also be an argument to running this from inverness with the stock going up around 15:00ish from EDB, plugging the gap between scotrails 13 something and the very busy cheeften and departing again round 20:00. The morning move could be booked off EDB0round 05:30 with a pre 9am arival at INV making it popular with business travelers who currently cant reach the highland capital before 10:30. the set could maybe run back round 10:00 calling major stations only again plugging a gap.

Planning it consistently through overnight posessions would be a nightmare.

Back in the day , when there was a complex network of overnight parcels and paper trains - tacking a coach or 2 on a service was sensible (think Shrewsbury - York mail) - but no economic case for say Plymouth - Newcastle , unless you felt like losing a lot of money.

At the national timetable conference about 8 years ago , an "open access" entrepreneur quoted a spec for a Dover - Edinburgh via Bham - conveying sleepers and car flats , traction 2x37 - routed via Skipton. Heard nothing more than that.

Seems daft to me, but you're right about posessions, amazes me how well the Caledonian sleeper fares, but then again, the WCML is quite an important route...
