Virgin Cross Country ran an overnight Manchester-Paignton train on Friday nights in the summer months up until 2002. I beleive they then ran a Friday night summer only Manchester-Newquay service in 2003 and 2004. These were not sleeper services, they utilised daytime coaches with the Manchester-Paignton being a Class 47/ MK 2s and the Newquay being either a HST or a Voyager.
Before privatisation, Intercity Cross Country did run an overnight sleeper service between Glasgow and Plymouth via WCML (The Night Westcountryman I think it was called. Think it ceased to operate around 1994-5.
Well seek & ye shall find. This explains the "new" late night EDB - NCL service I found on checking the works blackberry for times for a passenger. As I had just returned from annual leave I thought it was a new service. Bah!!
